A mini PC can run the encoder for a YouTube Live stream, playing a story video while it sends the broadcast to YouTube. To set it up, enable live streaming on your channel, create a stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder such as OBS with the stream URL and key, then test and monitor the feed. The important limitation: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that a 24/7 stream will be archived or can be restarted without interruption.
What the mini PC does—and what 24/7 requires
The mini PC is the local computer running an encoder application. The encoder takes the video and audio playback and sends a live feed to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS as an open-source software encoder available at no charge. This setup keeps the channel live only while the computer, playback, encoder, network connection, and power remain operational.
There is no mini PC model or minimum processor specification established here. Whether a device can handle a given stream depends on the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, playback workflow, and its ability to run unattended. Check those requirements against the exact device and operating system before buying or relying on it. A mini PC setup alone does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Before you configure the stream
- Enable YouTube Live: First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube.
- Prepare the story video: Use content you have the rights to stream and that complies with YouTube policies. The technical setup does not grant permission to rebroadcast a film, documentary, music, or other copyrighted material.
- Choose a connection and quality: Your upload connection must reliably sustain the encoder’s bitrate. Test it under the conditions in which the PC will stream; a published bitrate recommendation is not a bandwidth guarantee.
- Plan for unattended operation: Confirm the specific PC and operating system will not sleep, interrupt playback during updates or restarts, or leave the encoder stopped after a crash. Configure and test startup and recovery behavior yourself; these settings vary by hardware and OS.
- Secure the stream key: Treat it like a password. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to your stream.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Enable live streaming on the channel. Complete YouTube’s activation process and allow for the possibility that first-time access takes up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Use the Stream tab to create a stream, or use Manage to schedule one. A scheduled stream can have a shareable URL and viewer reminders.
- Open the stream details in Live Control Room. Locate the stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private; if it is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS or another encoder, select YouTube if offered. Otherwise, enter YouTube’s stream URL as the server and paste the stream key into the encoder’s stream-key field. Check that your story video and audio are playing as intended.
- Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Choose settings your mini PC can encode and your upload connection can sustain. YouTube detects incoming encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes the feed for viewers on different networks and devices.
- Test privately or unlisted before going public. Use a representative section with similar motion and audio to the intended story stream. Check the preview, sound, and stream-health warnings in Live Control Room.
- Start the encoder and confirm the feed. For a scheduled stream, wait for its preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when required. Confirm that the live feed is reaching YouTube rather than assuming that starting the encoder completed the process.
- For an intentional stop or restart, end the stream through YouTube’s workflow. Stop the encoder and end the broadcast in YouTube Studio. If you need a restart, plan for viewers to see a break unless you have verified a suitable rollover workflow.
Encoder settings to check
YouTube’s guidance accessed October 3, 2026 recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, and lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Supported audio formats listed include AAC and MP3. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to Google’s servers.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measurements of a particular mini PC or your internet service. Test the upload connection at the selected bitrate and leave enough headroom for normal fluctuations. If the connection or encoder struggles, lower the output quality and test again rather than relying on a bitrate the setup cannot sustain.
Plan carefully for streams longer than 12 hours
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This does not promise an archive for a stream lasting 12 hours or more, and it does not describe a way to roll a broadcast over without an interruption. If viewers need a replay, or the channel depends on an uninterrupted 24/7 presence, verify YouTube’s current behavior for longer transmissions and test the restart and archive process before relying on it.

A continuous stream also depends on more than the encoder settings: the video must keep playing, the mini PC must remain awake, the network and power must hold, and the encoder must recover if it stops. The official guidance cited here does not establish a specific mini PC reliability level or a universal rollover method.
