You cannot turn a single YouTube video upload into a 24/7 live stream. YouTube limits an uploaded video to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. To play a pre-recorded video continuously on YouTube Live, create a live stream in YouTube Studio and send it from an encoder configured with the stream URL and key. For a continuous broadcast, keep a local recording too: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
Can I upload a 24-hour video to YouTube?
No. YouTube Help states that the maximum upload is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Uploads longer than 15 minutes require a verified account. For files over 20 GB, YouTube advises using an up-to-date browser. These are YouTube’s stated limits and guidance; the official material reviewed does not set a separate India-specific upload cap.
If your goal is an on-demand documentary or recording, upload it as a regular video within the limit. If the goal is continuous playback with a live watch page, use YouTube Live and an encoder instead.
How do I prepare and upload a large video?
- Check verification and duration. Verify the YouTube account if the upload will exceed 15 minutes. Confirm that both file size and duration fit the 256 GB-or-12-hour limit.
- Check the file and browser. For a file above 20 GB, use an up-to-date browser, as YouTube advises. Allow time for upload: YouTube says duration depends on file size, bandwidth, traffic, and quality.
- Reduce file size only if needed. If the file exceeds the limit, YouTube suggests compression and specifically recommends H.264 to reduce size while maintaining quality. Export a test or review the compressed result before replacing your master; compression can affect the detail and sound you intend viewers to see and hear.
- Start a normal upload for on-demand viewing. Use YouTube’s upload flow. If the transfer is interrupted, return to the upload flow within 24 hours and select the same file to resume.
How do I stream a pre-recorded video 24/7 on YouTube?
A continuous prerecorded broadcast needs a playback source that repeats your video or playlist, plus an encoder that sends the output to YouTube. YouTube documents both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders; it does not prescribe one universal application for repeating a playlist. Choose a setup that can keep playback running and that you can monitor and record locally.

- Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and follow the prompt to enable live streaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast. Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Configure the encoder. Paste the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Set the encoder’s video source to the recording or repeating playlist. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot.
- Set resolution and bitrate for your connection. Measure your actual outbound upload speed, then choose an encoder bitrate that leaves headroom. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth available; if you send primary and backup streams, account for the bandwidth used by both. Its H.264 guidance gives 1080p30 a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended bitrate, and 1080p60 a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of stable delivery over your connection. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for other resolutions and codecs.
- Test before relying on the stream. Send a test with representative motion and audio. Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, then confirm the broadcast appears on its YouTube watch page. Continue monitoring health and sound after going live.
- Keep a local archive. Record the programme locally and verify that the recording file is growing. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 feed, treat the YouTube archive as a convenience, not your only copy.
Which encoder route should I choose?

Neither route removes the need to test the complete chain: video playback, encoder output, internet connection, and local recording. Do not assume any particular encoder will automatically repeat media or recover from every interruption.
What happens if my YouTube upload gets interrupted?
For a regular video upload, YouTube says you can resume for up to 24 hours by returning to the upload flow and selecting the same file. This is a recovery option for an interrupted upload, not a way to extend the 12-hour or 256 GB upload limit.

How should I protect a documentary or long recording?
- Keep an untouched master file separate from any compressed upload copy.
- For a live broadcast, enable local recording and check that the output is being written and has enough storage space.
- Keep a copy of any original footage and project files you may need to revise or re-export.
- Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for the footage, music, photographs, and other material in the programme. A live format does not remove copyright obligations.
YouTube Help’s upload and live-stream guidance does not establish an India-specific 24/7 procedure, upload exception, or separate stream-key process.
