For a large library, Vultr Object Storage and Rclone offer another way to transfer and stage files—but the documented workflow does not show OBS playing directly from an Object Storage bucket.
Choose where the library will live
There are two useful paths, depending on whether OBS will play files stored on the server or you want to stage a library in object storage first.
| Route | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Upload to the Vultr server with SFTP | Places files in a server directory that you can browse to when adding an OBS media source. | Choose a directory the OBS process can access. Vultr’s guide uses /tmp as an example, not as a recommendation for durable storage. |
| Transfer to Vultr Object Storage with Rclone | Copies files to an S3-compatible Vultr Object Storage bucket. | The documented guide does not show OBS reading the bucket as a media source. Arrange access separately or copy the files to a server-side playback directory. |
These are transfers to Vultr for playback in a live broadcast, not ordinary uploads of every library file to YouTube.
Upload the files directly to the Vultr server
1. Connect over SFTP and prepare a directory
Use a terminal and an SFTP client to connect to your Vultr server. Vultr’s Broadcaster guide demonstrates changing to an accessible directory, creating a folder for OBS files, and uploading local media there. It uses /tmp for the example; for a library you need to retain, use a suitable persistent location for your deployment and verify that the account running OBS can read it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Transfer the library
In the SFTP session, change to the remote directory you prepared, then use put to transfer files from the local working directory. Repeat for the files you need. Keep track of the destination path: you will browse to it from OBS when creating the source.
The cited workflow does not establish a universal Vultr transfer-size cap, storage allowance, or completion time. Those depend on your server, storage, network, and account. Do not treat YouTube’s individual-video upload limit as a Vultr SFTP limit.
Use Rclone with Vultr Object Storage instead
Configure the S3 remote
Vultr’s Rclone guide configures an S3 backend with provider Vultr, a regional endpoint, and your Object Storage access key and secret key. Its example endpoint is https://ewr1.vultrobjects.com; use the endpoint for your own region. The guide sets the bucket ACL to private. Keep objects private unless you deliberately need public URL access and understand the consequences.

Choose copy or sync deliberately
rclone copytransfers files without mirroring deletions at the destination.rclone syncmakes the destination match the source and can remove destination objects that are absent from the source. Check source and destination carefully before using it.
Vultr’s guide also demonstrates transfers between buckets and regions. It does not provide an OBS configuration for directly consuming bucket objects, so this route is a staging or storage leg unless you separately arrange a supported way to make the media available to OBS.
Handle Object Storage rate-limit errors
Vultr says HTTP 429, 503, or 504 responses may indicate Object Storage rate limiting. Its suggested mitigations are to set a transaction limit of 100 per second with --tpslimit 100 and limit parallel file transfers with --transfers 1. These are troubleshooting settings, not throughput or completion-time guarantees.
Set up OBS to loop the videos
One video: Media Source
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
- Browse to the file in the server directory where you uploaded it.
- Enable Loop, save the source, and check the preview for picture and the Audio Mixer for source audio.
Several videos: VLC Video Source
For a rotating library, use OBS’s VLC Video Source to add the files you want played in sequence and looped repeatedly. Check the preview and mixer before going live; confirm that the selected files play and that audio is present where expected.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or manage the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the live settings into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address”; keep the key private and reset it in Live Control Room if it is compromised.
- Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it for encrypted ingest.
- In OBS, click Start Streaming, then verify that YouTube shows the stream as active and check its stream-health messages.
Encoder settings and preflight
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings table to choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that suit the upload capacity you have measured. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds, as well as constant-bitrate encoding. Do not assume one bitrate is right for every resolution or connection.
Before the broadcast, test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health and messages after starting. Lower latency can mean more playback buffering; if your stream does not depend on audience interaction, lower latency may matter less than stable playback.

YouTube Help says unverified accounts are limited by default to individual uploads of 15 minutes or less; verified accounts can upload longer videos. It recommends an up-to-date browser for ordinary uploads larger than 20 GB and sets the maximum individual upload at 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. These figures apply to uploading individual videos to YouTube, not transferring files by SFTP to Vultr or storing objects in Vultr Object Storage.

Likewise, YouTube’s ordinary-video upload encoding recommendations are not the same as its live encoder settings. For a Vultr loop stream, configure OBS using the live guidance rather than assuming the ordinary upload profile governs the broadcast.

OBS cannot find or open a file
- Confirm the file finished transferring and the path in OBS matches its remote location.
- Check that the OBS process’s user can read the directory and file.
- If the files are only in Object Storage, remember that the documented Rclone workflow does not configure OBS to read a bucket directly; copy them to an accessible server directory or arrange access separately.
The stream starts, but there is no sound or picture
- Check the OBS preview and Audio Mixer before going live; make sure the selected file or VLC playlist contains the expected media tracks.
- Confirm the intended sources are active in the scene and that the file is playable in the configured source.
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key from the intended YouTube Live stream.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm the stream is active in Live Control Room.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
Rclone receives HTTP 429, 503, or 504
Try Vultr’s documented rate-limit mitigations: --tpslimit 100 and --transfers 1. A reduced transfer rate may take longer; Vultr’s guide does not promise a particular speed.
A sync removed objects you wanted to keep
rclone sync mirrors the source and may delete destination objects missing from it. Review the source and destination before running it again; use rclone copy when you want to transfer files without mirroring source-side deletions.

When to manage the server yourself—and when not to
Vultr plus OBS gives you direct control over the server and file workflow, but you are responsible for setup, administration, monitoring, and recovery. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory also lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. The directory does not compare its prices, reliability, or limits with a self-managed Vultr setup, so compare those against your own needs before choosing.
Or let it run in the cloud
