How to Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu Vultr Cloud Compute and Stream to YouTube

A version-aware guide to installing OBS on Ubuntu Vultr Cloud Compute, preparing a graphical session, and sending a stream to YouTube Live.

You can run OBS Studio on an Ubuntu Vultr Cloud Compute instance and send its output to YouTube Live, but the VM needs more than OBS installed: it must provide a working graphical session and OpenGL support. Vultr’s documented setup uses a remote desktop, installs OBS and FFmpeg, then connects OBS to a YouTube stream key. Its figures are tutorial recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular stream will work on every instance.

Check Ubuntu, OBS and graphics compatibility first

OBS installation depends on your Ubuntu release and the package source you choose. A successful apt install does not establish that you have the newest OBS build or a version supported by future releases.

The OBS download page presents its official Ubuntu PPA instructions for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio followed by sudo apt install obs-studio. However, the OBS Project announced on June 19, 2026 that OBS Studio 33 is planned to drop Ubuntu 24.04 support. The announcement describes a future release; check the current release and compatibility status before choosing a long-term installation. The project recommends Ubuntu 26.04 or later for Ubuntu 24.04 users who want future major and minor updates, or switching to Flatpak. Read the OBS 33 announcement; check the OBS download page.

Vultr’s April 1, 2025 guide documents the Ubuntu repository method below. Package versions vary by Ubuntu release and repository, so check the package version and source for your image before relying on it:

OBS on Linux requires an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. A command-line-only Ubuntu Server is not automatically ready for OBS’s desktop workflow. Confirm that your selected Vultr instance exposes working graphics and that a graphical desktop session is available. OBS also notes that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee successful streaming: CPU demand depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. See OBS system requirements and its Linux installation information.

Choose and prepare a Vultr instance

Vultr’s 2025 tutorial calls for a fresh Ubuntu Server instance with at least 2 virtual CPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage and 3 TB bandwidth. It assumes SSH access through a non-root user with sudo privileges, and adds a desktop environment for remote access. These are the guide’s deployment baseline, not independently tested performance guarantees or a promise that every resolution and scene will run reliably.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

The guide suggests 720p (1280 Ă— 720) with 2 or more vCPUs, and warns that higher resolution and frame rate need more processing power. Choose a VM with the graphics support, CPU headroom, memory, storage and outbound bandwidth your intended scenes and stream settings require. No specific Vultr plan has been established as a tested best choice. The guide uses remote desktop software such as VNC Viewer or NoMachine to access the desktop.

Install OBS and open its desktop

  1. Connect to Ubuntu over SSH using the non-root sudo account configured for the instance.
  2. Install a desktop environment and remote desktop access if your Ubuntu Server image does not already provide them. Use Vultr’s guide for its desktop and remote-access workflow: Create a Streaming Server with OBS and Ubuntu.
  3. Update Ubuntu and install packages with the Vultr commands shown above, or use the official OBS PPA only after checking that its current Ubuntu and OBS versions suit your release.
  4. Connect to the VM’s desktop using your remote desktop client. Launch OBS from the graphical session; installing the package in SSH alone does not create a usable desktop session.
  5. Confirm OBS opens and can access graphics before configuring a stream. If it cannot open or reports graphics/display errors, resolve the desktop, display server or OpenGL issue first.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy its stream key from the stream settings.
  2. Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it or share it in screenshots, and rotate it if it is exposed.
  3. Open OBS in the VM’s desktop and select YouTube or YouTube Gaming as the service in its stream settings. Paste the stream key into the key field.
  4. Run the OBS configuration wizard and choose the canvas/output resolution and frame rate appropriate to your content and VM capacity.
  5. Set encoder output deliberately. YouTube’s encoder guidance calls for specifying resolution, frame rate and bitrate, and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Consult YouTube’s current bitrate table for the chosen resolution and frame rate rather than guessing a number: YouTube Live encoder settings.
  6. Test before an important broadcast. Start OBS streaming, verify that YouTube Studio receives the feed, and check both the OBS status and the stream preview. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured source feed.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules

Before broadcasting a documentary, music, clips or other material, confirm that you have the rights or permissions needed for live streaming. An existing upload or permission to watch content does not by itself establish a right to rebroadcast it. YouTube may apply its copyright systems to live content; a stream can be interrupted or otherwise affected if a rights issue is detected. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright rules in Studio and consult the copyright safety checklist before using third-party material.

Separately, monetization eligibility and reused-content review are not the same as permission to stream. A channel may need to meet YouTube Partner Program policies even when a particular video is allowed to remain online. Check the current YouTube policies that apply to your channel and content; do not assume that looping a documentary or other prerecorded program automatically qualifies for monetization.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

  • OBS installs but will not open: verify that you are in a graphical X or Wayland session, not only an SSH shell, and that the VM exposes OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics.
  • The OBS package is missing or older than expected: Ubuntu repository versions vary. Check your Ubuntu release and package source, then compare against the current OBS download instructions and release compatibility before switching to the PPA.
  • OBS 33 compatibility is unclear: the OBS Project’s June 19, 2026 announcement says that future OBS Studio 33 will no longer support Ubuntu 24.04. Check whether that release has since shipped and follow current OBS guidance for your actual Ubuntu release.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm the selected service, paste the stream key again from the intended YouTube Studio event, and verify that the event is ready to receive a feed. Rotate the key if it may have been exposed.
  • The stream is unstable or the VM struggles: reduce resolution, frame rate or scene complexity and reassess CPU headroom. Vultr’s 720p suggestion is a starting point for its 2-or-more-vCPU tutorial configuration, not a performance guarantee.
  • Bitrate or connection settings are uncertain: use YouTube’s current encoder table for your resolution and frame rate, and select RTMPS where supported. Do not substitute an arbitrary bitrate.
  • A live stream is interrupted over content rights: stop using material unless you have the necessary rights or permission, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright guidance before trying again.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on a YouTube channel rather than operate an OBS desktop, StreamNeo is a simpler cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded video, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
