First decide whether you want to publish each file as a YouTube video or play the files as a YouTube Live broadcast: those are separate jobs. Transfer the folder to the VPS, verify the files, then either upload them through YouTube or configure an encoder on the VPS to send a live stream. For a folder already on your computer, a resumable secure transfer is usually the sensible starting point; for files in cloud storage, a cloud-to-VPS copy may avoid routing them through your computer. The right command and expected transfer time depend on your operating system, VPS access, file count, storage, and actual network speeds.
Choose the right workflow before transferring anything
A folder on a VPS is only a collection of files. It is not yet published on YouTube and it is not automatically a live broadcast. Choose the intended outcome first:
- Publish finished videos: upload each video through YouTube’s video-upload workflow. If you are building an application, YouTube’s resumable upload protocol is designed to recover from interruptions.
- Broadcast prerecorded material as live: run an encoder on the VPS, use the video files as its inputs, and send the resulting live stream to YouTube. YouTube describes encoder-based streaming and lists OBS as one software encoder option: YouTube encoder setup.
In either case, the folder transfer is a separate first step. The VPS must have enough disk space for the files and enough network capacity for the eventual upload or stream. No India-specific transfer speed or particular VPS plan can be assumed: server location, ISP routing, sustained upstream, congestion, and provider limits all matter.
Plan the transfer from India to the VPS
Check the files and capacity
- Measure the total folder size and count the files. A folder containing thousands of small files can behave differently from a few large video files.
- Confirm the VPS has enough free disk space for the whole folder, plus room for any temporary files your transfer or encoder creates.
- Ask the VPS provider about its region, sustained outbound transfer allowance, disk capacity, and whether your intended encoder workload is permitted.
- Identify the source: a local computer and a cloud drive require different transfer routes. Avoid an unnecessary extra copy if the files are already in a cloud service that can transfer directly to the VPS.
Choose a transfer method that can recover
Use a secure file-transfer method compatible with your computer, VPS operating system, and server access. For a large folder or an unstable connection, choose a tool that can resume interrupted transfers rather than restarting from zero. There is no single command that fits every setup: the right syntax depends on your source operating system, destination path, authentication method, and chosen transfer tool. Confirm those details with your VPS provider or the transfer tool’s documentation before starting.

After copying, compare the expected and received file counts and sizes. If your transfer tool supports checksums, verify them for important files. Do not begin a long YouTube upload or scheduled broadcast until the files you need are present and readable on the VPS.
If the folder is in Google Drive
rclone supports Google Drive and can copy between supported endpoints, including a local directory and Drive. Its Drive documentation notes that rate limits can constrain transfers of many small files to about two files per second; that is a stated limitation, not a guaranteed speed for every account or transfer. See the rclone Google Drive documentation for setup and current limitations. As of the documentation accessed October 3, 2026, rclone says its shared client ID is being retired during 2026 and directs users to create their own, so check the current setup instructions. Staging files in Drive does not itself upload them to YouTube: you still need to copy them to the VPS or use YouTube’s upload workflow.

If you want to publish each file as a YouTube video
Use YouTube’s browser upload for ordinary batches
Upload each video through YouTube’s upload page. Upload time depends on file size, bandwidth, traffic, format, and quality; YouTube notes that higher-quality video, such as 4K, takes longer than 1080p. There is no reliable India-to-YouTube duration estimate without measuring the actual connection and file. YouTube’s guidance is to let a slow upload finish rather than interrupting it. If a browser upload stops, return to the upload page and select the same file; YouTube says you can continue where it left off for up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s video upload guidance.
Use the resumable API for interruption-prone uploads
For an application or repeatable automated workflow, YouTube’s Data API documents resumable uploads: “You can upload videos more reliably by using the resumable upload protocol for Google APIs.” The client initiates an upload session, saves the returned session URI, and sends the file bytes. If the connection fails, query the session status before resuming. A response of 308 Resume Incomplete can include a Range header indicating which bytes arrived; continue from the next byte so you neither skip nor resend data. The session URI has a finite lifetime, so do not leave an interrupted session idle indefinitely. Follow the protocol details at YouTube Data API resumable uploads.

Estimate the two network legs independently if you transfer files to a VPS and then upload them to YouTube: source-to-VPS throughput is not the same as VPS-to-YouTube throughput. Use the actual sustained rates and total bytes rather than a speed-test peak to plan a batch.
If you want to stream prerecorded files on YouTube Live
Prepare the channel before the broadcast
Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel well ahead of the planned start. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Review the current encoder setup guidance and make sure the channel is ready before scheduling an event.

Run the encoder on the VPS
- Install and configure a compatible encoder on the VPS. The VPS is the machine doing the encoding; the video files on its disk are the encoder inputs.
- Set up the YouTube live stream in YouTube’s live control workflow, then use the stream key and server details YouTube provides in the encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not paste it into public scripts, screenshots, or shared logs.
- Choose a source and schedule in the encoder. Test a short private or unlisted stream first, where appropriate, to confirm that the VPS can read the files and maintain the connection.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s live preview or status before relying on the broadcast. Confirm that the intended video and audio are present and that the stream remains connected.
YouTube’s encoder overview explains that an encoder converts video into a format YouTube can receive. The cited guidance does not endorse a VPS company or confirm that any particular VPS has sufficient capacity. Check the provider’s current network and workload terms, and size the setup for your files and intended broadcast.
Check rights and channel policies
Having a video file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Confirm that you own or have the necessary rights to every video, music track, image, and other material in the stream. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies and its channel monetization policies, including rules relevant to reused content. A continuous loop of material you do not have rights to can still trigger claims or other enforcement; changing the delivery method does not make unauthorized material permissible.

Estimate time and avoid common transfer failures
Use the actual file size and a sustained transfer rate observed on each leg. A rough estimate is total bytes divided by sustained bytes per second; real transfers can take longer because of protocol overhead, congestion, retries, and many-small-file delays. Do not promise a fixed duration based only on being in India or on the VPS’s advertised port speed.
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer stops and begins again from the start | The selected tool or mode is not resuming partial files. | Use a resumable transfer mode, preserve partial data where supported, and retry the interrupted job. Verify the destination files before deleting the source. |
| Many small files transfer much more slowly than expected | Per-file overhead or a service limit can dominate total bytes; rclone documents a Google Drive limitation of about two files per second. | Check the relevant tool or service documentation, transfer a test subset, and account for file count as well as total size. |
| Files arrived but the encoder cannot read them | The destination path, permissions, filename handling, or file format may differ from what the encoder expects. | Check the exact path and access permissions, open a sample file on the VPS, and test with a short input before setting up a long broadcast. |
| YouTube upload is slow | File size, quality, format, upload traffic, and available bandwidth affect duration. | Let the browser upload finish if it is continuing. If it stops, reselect the same file within YouTube’s documented continuation window, or use the resumable API for an application workflow. |
| Live streaming is not enabled when you need it | The channel’s first-time live enablement may still be processing. | Enable live streaming in advance; YouTube says this may take up to 24 hours. |
| The VPS runs out of space or cannot sustain the broadcast | Insufficient disk, outbound transfer allowance, or server/network capacity. | Check available disk and provider limits before copying the full library; ask the provider to confirm capacity for the intended encoder workload. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping an encoder running on your VPS: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps it running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only, and it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. See StreamNeo or current plans. Start the free day at StreamNeo signup.
