In most cases, the YouTube “app” on Windows 11 is a Progressive Web App (PWA) installed through Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome—not a traditional native Windows program. You can usually remove it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps. If it is not listed there, uninstall it through the browser that installed it or remove the shortcut if it was only pinned.
What you are actually removing
YouTube can appear like a desktop application because Edge and Chrome can install the YouTube website as a standalone web app. It opens in its own window, but it still relies on the browser and YouTube’s website.
Your installation may instead be a browser shortcut, an Edge PWA, a Chrome PWA, or—depending on the computer—a package installed through another source. The correct removal method depends on which one you have. Removing the app does not delete YouTube, your Google account, subscriptions, watch history, or the Edge or Chrome browser.
Method 1: Uninstall YouTube from Windows 11 Settings
This is the quickest general method when YouTube appears in Windows’ installed-app list.

- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for YouTube.
- Select the three-dot More button beside YouTube.
- Select Uninstall, then confirm if Windows asks again.
Microsoft documents this route in its Windows app-uninstall guidance. The appearance of the menu can vary slightly between Windows 11 updates.
What should happen?
The YouTube PWA should disappear from the installed-app list and normally from the Start menu. A taskbar or desktop icon may remain if it was created separately. Remove those shortcuts manually using the instructions below.
Method 2: Uninstall YouTube from Microsoft Edge
Use Edge’s app manager if Edge installed YouTube or if Windows Settings does not show it.

- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Enter
edge://appsin the address bar and press Enter. - Find the YouTube app.
- Select Details.
- Select Uninstall and confirm.
- If Edge offers to delete the app’s history and data, choose that option if you want the local app data removed as well.
Microsoft’s Edge app-management instructions explain that this page manages web apps installed through Edge, including their permissions, shortcuts, auto-start settings, and uninstall controls.
Important: edge://apps is not a Windows-wide app manager. A YouTube PWA installed through Chrome may not appear there.
Method 3: Uninstall YouTube from Google Chrome
If YouTube opens in a Chrome-branded standalone window, Chrome probably installed it as a web app.

- Open the YouTube app.
- Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Uninstall YouTube or a similarly named uninstall option.
- Select Remove.
- If Chrome offers to delete the app’s stored data, select that option if you want a clean removal.
Google documents this process in its Chrome web-app help. Chrome also lists web apps at chrome://apps; depending on your Chrome version, you may be able to manage or remove YouTube from there. Menu labels can change with browser updates.

Work through these possibilities:
- It was installed through Edge: Check
edge://apps. - It was installed through Chrome: Open the YouTube app and use its three-dot uninstall menu, or check
chrome://apps. - It is only a shortcut: There may be no app installation to uninstall. Remove or unpin the shortcut instead.
- You searched for the wrong name: Look for another YouTube-related entry or the display name shown by the app window.
- It was already removed: A pinned Start, taskbar, or desktop shortcut can remain after the app itself is gone.
Do not begin by deleting random folders from AppData or editing the Registry. Browser-managed PWAs should normally be removed through Windows, Edge, or Chrome.
If the Uninstall button is missing or fails
- Close the YouTube app and the browser that installed it.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- If available, open the app’s Advanced options and try Repair.
- If Repair does not help, try Reset, then attempt the uninstall again.
- For a conventional desktop program with damaged uninstall information, use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
Repair and Reset are not available for every app. For a YouTube PWA, the browser-specific removal route is usually the more appropriate fallback. On a work or school computer, administrator policies may also restrict removal.

Should you delete the app’s data?
Deleting app data removes locally stored browser information associated with the PWA. It may sign you out or remove local preferences, so you might need to sign in again if you reinstall it.
Keeping the data may preserve local browser information, while deleting it gives you a cleaner removal. Edge and Chrome provide this choice in their documented uninstall flows. It does not delete YouTube or Google data stored online, such as your account, subscriptions, channel, or watch history.

- Taskbar: Right-click the YouTube icon and choose Unpin from taskbar or Remove from taskbar.
- Start menu: Right-click the entry and choose Unpin from Start, if that option is available.
- Desktop: Right-click the shortcut and choose Delete.
If you only wanted to remove the icon—not the installed PWA—unpinning or deleting the shortcut may be all that is necessary.

What uninstalling YouTube does not do
Removing the Windows app does not uninstall Edge or Chrome, remove YouTube from those browsers, block the YouTube website, sign you out of Google everywhere, delete downloaded videos handled by another application, or erase cloud-stored YouTube account information. Someone can also reinstall the PWA or recreate a shortcut later.
If an unfamiliar program named “YouTube” behaves suspiciously rather than like a normal browser web app, treat it separately from the standard PWA process and run a scan with Windows Security. Do not assume every unfamiliar executable is an official YouTube app.
Verification checklist
After removal, confirm that:
- YouTube is gone from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- It no longer appears in
edge://appsor Chrome’s web-app controls. - The Start menu, taskbar, and desktop contain no unwanted YouTube shortcut.
- You selected the browser’s data-deletion option if local app data also needed to be removed.
- The YouTube website still works in a browser, unless you separately blocked it.
For a normal Windows 11 YouTube PWA, Windows Settings is the simplest first choice; Edge or Chrome’s own uninstall page is the best fallback when the app is browser-managed or missing from the Windows list.
