Turn on Crunchyroll subtitles from the video player—not from Xbox’s system accessibility settings. Start an episode, open the player controls, choose the Settings gear, select Subtitles/CC, and pick an available language such as English.
Turn on subtitles during playback
- Open the Crunchyroll app on a supported Xbox device.
- Start the episode you want to watch.
- Reveal the video-player controls while the episode is playing.
- Select the Settings gear.
- Open Subtitles/CC.
- Choose the language you want, then return to playback and confirm that the subtitle text appears.
Crunchyroll documents this player path for supported devices: Settings gear → Subtitles/CC → preferred language. Menu placement can vary slightly with the Xbox app version.
Change the subtitle language
Changing languages uses the same in-player menu. While the episode is playing, open Settings → Subtitles/CC, then select one of the languages listed for that title and episode. The list is not universal: subtitle languages vary by show, episode, region, and the version of the content. A default preference cannot create a language track that the title does not provide.
See Crunchyroll’s language instructions for the supported-device limitation: How do I change the subtitle language?

Turn subtitles off
- Open the player controls during playback.
- Select the Settings gear.
- Choose Subtitles/CC.
- Select the available off or disabled option.
Crunchyroll says closed captions can be turned on or off for supported shows. If no off option appears, the title may require subtitles because of licensing or regional requirements; this is not necessarily an app fault. Crunchyroll explains why some content cannot have subtitles disabled.

- Open Account or profile settings.
- Select Preferences.
- Find Subtitle/CC Language.
- Choose your preferred default language.
The exact account-settings layout may differ between Xbox, the website, and mobile apps. The per-episode player menu remains the quickest way to change one episode, and the account preference only applies when that language is available.
Subtitles and closed captions: what is the difference?
- Subtitles generally translate spoken dialogue.
- Closed captions may also describe relevant non-dialogue audio, such as music or sound effects.
- Crunchyroll commonly groups both controls under Subtitles/CC.
- A title may not offer separate subtitle and caption tracks, or the same language choices for both.
If Subtitles/CC is missing
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that an episode is actively playing, not just open on its details page.
- Reveal the player controls and look specifically for the Settings gear.
- Check Subtitles/CC, not only the audio-language menu.
- Try another episode or title. If the menu appears there, the limitation is probably specific to the original content.
- Update the Crunchyroll Xbox app. Crunchyroll’s documented path is Xbox Home → My games & apps → Apps → Crunchyroll → Options/Menu → Check for Updates. See How to get started on Xbox.
- Close and reopen Crunchyroll, then restart the Xbox if the controls still fail to load.
- Consider regional availability: subtitle tracks and some content can differ by country, account, or title version.
English is not listed
The episode may not include an English track, regional licensing may limit the choices, or the app may not have refreshed correctly. Try another title and restart the app. Changing your account default does not add a track that Crunchyroll does not offer.

The gear icon does not appear
Start or resume playback and move the controller to bring up the player controls. If they remain absent, exit and reopen the episode, restart the app, and check for an update. Avoid relying on one universal controller-button sequence because the control behavior can vary by interface state.
Subtitles are delayed or out of sync
Pause and resume, exit and reopen the episode, restart the app, and check for updates. Try the same episode on another supported device to determine whether the problem is Xbox-specific. Crunchyroll’s documented instructions do not identify a dedicated Xbox subtitle-sync control; contact Crunchyroll support if the issue persists.

Why subtitles may be forced on
Some Japanese-audio anime require subtitles to remain enabled. Crunchyroll attributes this exception to licensing and regional requirements. Most other content provides a selectable off option, but availability is title-specific.
Using another device to diagnose the problem
You can sign in on the Crunchyroll website or a supported mobile or TV app and inspect the same episode’s Subtitles/CC menu. If the track exists elsewhere but not on Xbox, the issue is likely app-specific; if it is missing everywhere, the title or region probably does not provide it. The website’s player controls are described by Crunchyroll here: Getting started on Crunchyroll website.

What to expect from the Xbox app
Crunchyroll added in-playback subtitle-language and subtitle-off controls in its redesigned Xbox app announced on February 16, 2023. That announcement is historical context, not a guarantee that every current screen looks identical: Crunchyroll launches new Xbox app. The current support guidance confirms subtitle preferences and closed-caption controls for supported shows, but does not provide a complete model-by-model Xbox compatibility table. Use the labels Settings, Subtitles/CC, and subtitle language as your guide.
The Bottom Line
On Xbox, play the episode, open the player’s Settings gear, choose Subtitles/CC, and select an available language—or the off option when that title permits it.
