To turn on captions in Prime Video, start a supported title, open the playback controls, select the CC or Subtitles icon, and choose a caption track. On a phone, tap the screen to reveal the controls; on a TV or streaming device, press the remote’s Enter, OK, or playback button as needed. The icon appears only when captions are available for that title.
Menus and language options can differ by device, country, and title. The steps below cover the usual playback method, plus Roku and Apple TV settings that may help when the in-app control is not enough.
Turn on captions on a phone or tablet
On an iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet:
- Open the Prime Video app and start the movie or episode.
- Tap the video to show the playback controls.
- Tap the CC or Subtitles icon.
- Choose the language or caption track you want.
To turn captions off, open the same menu and select Off. This in-player menu selects a track supplied with the title; iOS or Android accessibility preferences are not a substitute for a Prime Video track. See Prime Video’s caption instructions.

Turn on captions on a computer
On Windows, Mac, or Chromebook, play the title on the Prime Video website. Move the pointer over the video or click it to reveal the playback controls, select CC/Subtitles, then choose a track. Return to that menu and select Off to disable captions.

Turn on captions on a TV, Fire TV, console, or streaming player
Start the title and open its playback menu with the remote or controller. If the controls are hidden, press Enter, OK, or the device’s playback button. Select the on-screen CC/Subtitles icon and choose a language or track. The precise button sequence differs by device and app version, so follow the controls shown on screen rather than relying on a fixed remote shortcut. Prime Video’s connected-device guidance describes this playback-menu approach.
Some connected-device screens also let you choose subtitles before playback: open the title’s details screen and look for Subtitles in its options. That route is not displayed consistently on every TV or player; the playback menu is the more general method.

Roku: try the app, then Roku settings
First, use the Prime Video playback menu and select CC/Subtitles. If that control is unavailable or does not work, Roku’s system setting may help:

- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility or Captions, depending on the Roku interface.
- Open Captions mode and choose a mode such as On or Off.
Roku may also offer On always, On replay, or On mute; available modes vary by device. Roku notes that some streaming apps use their own caption controls, so its system setting will not necessarily change captions in Prime Video. See Roku’s caption instructions.

Prime Video subtitle presets are not supported on Roku. If captions need a different appearance, look in Roku’s caption settings for available text, background, or window options. Those choices apply only when the app uses Roku’s caption system.
Apple TV: use playback controls first
While a video is playing, press Play/Pause to display the playback controls, open Subtitles, and select a track. Apple’s device-level default is separate: on supported Apple devices, go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles and Captioning and turn on Closed Captions + SDH. Treat that as an accessibility preference or fallback, not a guaranteed fix for every Prime Video title. For device-specific details, see Apple’s subtitle and language guide.

Change the caption language or appearance
To change languages, open the in-player CC/Subtitles menu and select another listed track. If the language you want is not listed, that title may not provide captions in it. The Audio & Languages option changes the spoken soundtrack; it does not turn captions on.

These controls are not universal. Check the player or device’s own caption settings rather than assuming Prime Video offers the same font, background, opacity, or preset options everywhere.

If the captions icon is missing or captions do not appear
- Check another title. Captions and languages vary by title, event, region, and device. If captions appear on another show, the original title may not have the track you need.
- Reveal the playback controls. Tap the screen, move the pointer, or press Play/Pause, Enter, or OK, depending on the device.
- Toggle the track. If captions are selected but invisible, turn them off, reopen the menu, and select the track again. Try another listed language if one is available.
- Restart the app and device. Close and reopen Prime Video, then restart the TV or streaming player.
- Check for updates. Update the Prime Video app and the device software. On Roku or Apple TV, also check the device caption settings—but remember that an app may manage captions independently.
- Compare devices. Try the same title on another supported device. If captions fail across devices despite being listed for that title, contact Prime Video support.
A missing icon does not by itself mean the app is broken: the title may not have captions, or the requested language may not be available. Availability can also differ for live programming; check the particular event rather than assuming every live stream supports captions. Prime Video says accessibility features vary by content and title; see its accessibility information.
Captions, subtitles, audio description, and Dialogue Boost
| Feature | What it does |

| Closed captions | Displays dialogue and may include meaningful sound information, such as music or sound effects. The detail depends on the title and track; not every subtitle track includes sound descriptions. |

| Dialogue Boost | Adjusts dialogue audibility in supported content; it does not display text. |
