To turn off subtitles on Prime Video, start the video, open the playback controls, select the Subtitles or Closed Caption icon, and choose Off or None. The same basic method works across browsers, phones, tablets, smart TVs, Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, consoles, and other supported devices.

The quickest way to turn off Prime Video subtitles

Start the movie or show, open the playback controls, select the Subtitles or Closed Caption icon, and choose Off or None instead of a language. This is the primary method on Prime Video, whether you are watching in a browser, on a phone, smart TV, streaming device, or game console.

  1. Open the Prime Video title you want to watch.
  2. Start playback.
  3. Reveal the playback controls. Tap the screen on a phone or tablet. On a TV, console, or streaming device, press the button that opens the timeline—often Play/Pause, Enter, or Select.
  4. Select the Subtitles, Closed Caption, or speech-bubble icon.
  5. Choose Off, None, or the equivalent option.

If you select another language, subtitles will remain on. Look specifically for the option that disables them.

Turn off Prime Video subtitles by device

Web browser on a computer

  1. Play the title on the Prime Video website.
  2. Move the pointer over the video to display the playback controls. If they do not appear, click the video once.
  3. Select the Closed Caption/Subtitles icon.
  4. Choose Off or None.

The control may disappear when the video controls are hidden, so click or move the pointer over the player again if necessary.

Android phone or tablet

  1. Open the Prime Video app and begin playback.
  2. Tap the video to show the controls.
  3. Tap the Closed Caption/Subtitles icon.
  4. Select Off or None.

Android device models can display controls differently. If captions still appear after the Prime Video setting is off, check the device’s accessibility caption preferences. The in-app Prime Video setting is the first place to change the subtitle track; Android’s system caption preference does not necessarily control every media app.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Start the title in the Prime Video app.
  2. Tap the screen to reveal playback controls.
  3. Select the Closed Caption/Subtitles icon.
  4. Choose Off or None.

If text remains, review the iPhone or iPad’s accessibility caption settings. An iOS-wide preference may not control Prime Video’s own subtitle track, so confirm the setting inside the player first.

Fire TV or Fire TV Stick

  1. Start playing the title in Prime Video.
  2. Press a button on the remote to display the playback controls.
  3. Open the Closed Caption/Subtitles menu.
  4. Choose Off or None.

Prime Video’s subtitle control is separate from Fire TV accessibility features such as VoiceView. Turning off VoiceView will not necessarily disable subtitles in the video. If you watch Prime Video through a Fire TV Stick 4K, use the in-player Subtitles control while the title is playing; buying a different device is not required to change this setting.

Smart TV

  1. Open the title in the Prime Video app and start playback.
  2. Use the remote to open the playback menu.
  3. Select the Subtitles or Closed Caption icon.
  4. Set it to Off or None.

If subtitles continue, check the television’s own Accessibility, Captions, Subtitles, or Hearing settings. These labels and menu paths vary by TV manufacturer. A TV-wide caption setting can be separate from the Prime Video subtitle track.

Roku

First use the Prime Video player:

  1. Start the title.
  2. Press the Roku remote’s options button or the equivalent control to reveal playback options.
  3. Open the subtitle or caption setting.
  4. Choose Off.

Also check Roku’s device-level caption setting if subtitles return:

Home > Settings > Accessibility or Captions > Captions mode > Off

Roku notes that some streaming services use their own caption controls and may not follow the device-level setting. That is why both the Prime Video playback menu and Roku’s caption setting may need checking. A Roku setting changed during playback may also be retained for future programs, depending on the service and device.

Apple TV

  1. Play the Prime Video title.
  2. Open the playback controls.
  3. Select the subtitle or caption control.
  4. Choose Off or None.

If subtitles return automatically, inspect Apple TV’s automatic subtitle options under Settings > Video and Audio. Look for settings related to:

  • Subtitles for different languages
  • Subtitles when the video is muted
  • Subtitles after skipping back

Turn off the automatic option responsible for the captions. Apple TV’s device-level behavior can be separate from the subtitle choice made inside Prime Video.

Game console or set-top box

  1. Start playback in the Prime Video app.
  2. Use the controller or remote to open the playback controls.
  3. Select the Closed Caption/Subtitles icon.
  4. Choose Off or None.

The button used to display the controls differs between consoles and set-top boxes. If the controls are not visible, try Play/Pause, Enter, or the button that opens the timeline.

Echo Show or Fire tablet

  1. Begin playing the title.
  2. Tap the screen to reveal playback controls.
  3. Select the Closed Caption/Subtitles icon.
  4. Choose Off or None.

What to do if Prime Video subtitles keep turning on

When the in-player option does not solve the problem, work through these checks in order.

1. Turn them off while the video is playing

Prime Video’s playback menu is the main control for selecting or disabling the subtitle track. A setting found elsewhere on the device may not change the track currently selected in Prime Video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check whether the text is actually from Prime Video

Subtitles and captions can come from different layers. Prime Video may be displaying a selected subtitle track, while the TV, phone, streaming device, or operating system may be adding an accessibility overlay or live-caption feature. If the text remains after Prime Video is set to Off, inspect the device’s accessibility and caption settings.

  • Enjoy the show in 4K Ultra HD, with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
  • Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.

3. Check captions that appear when audio is muted

Some device settings automatically show captions when the volume is muted. Apple TV and Roku can have behaviors or options related to captions during muted playback. Unmute the device temporarily and check the device-level caption settings if the subtitles disappear.

4. Check the correct profile

Confirm that you are using the intended Prime Video profile. If the setting appears to reset, another profile or a profile-specific language or caption preference may be involved. Roku also notes that some caption or language settings can be saved per profile.

5. Consider the title and device

Subtitle, alternate-audio, and accessibility features vary by title, catalog, and device. One program may expose different options from another, and not every device has identical controls. If the subtitle icon is missing entirely, try another title to determine whether the limitation is specific to that program.

6. Restart and update as a final practical step

Close and reopen Prime Video, restart the streaming device or television, and install any available app or device update. These are general troubleshooting steps rather than a guaranteed Prime Video fix, but they can clear a playback menu that is not saving a changed setting.

Subtitles, captions, and accessibility settings are not always the same

Prime Video uses both “subtitles” and “captions” in its help materials. Ordinary subtitles commonly provide dialogue or translation, while closed captions can also include information about sounds and other audio. The wording and available options depend on the title and device.

Likewise, a screen reader, live-caption feature, television accessibility overlay, and Prime Video subtitle track are separate functions. Disabling one does not necessarily disable the others. For the most reliable result, turn off the track in the Prime Video playback menu first, then check the device’s accessibility settings only if text remains or returns automatically.

Can subtitles be disabled everywhere with one account setting?

Do not assume that one account-wide switch will disable subtitles on every device. Prime Video’s controls and supported accessibility features can vary by title and device, and Roku or Apple TV may apply additional caption behavior. The dependable approach is to change the setting during playback on the device you are currently using, then investigate that device’s automatic caption settings if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I turn off subtitles on Prime Video?

Start playback, reveal the controls, select the Subtitles or Closed Caption icon, and choose Off or None. On phones and tablets, tap the screen; on TVs and streaming devices, press the button that opens the timeline.

Why are subtitles still showing on Prime Video through Roku?

Yes. Roku can have both its own caption mode and a Prime Video subtitle setting. Turn subtitles off in the Prime Video player first, then check Home > Settings > Accessibility or Captions > Captions mode and select Off.

Why do subtitles keep coming back on Apple TV?

Check Apple TV’s automatic subtitle options under Settings > Video and Audio. Options related to subtitles for different languages, muted playback, or skipping back can cause captions to reappear.

Check the Prime Video playback menu first. If it is set to Off but text remains, inspect your phone, TV, streaming device, or operating system for accessibility captions, live captions, or another caption overlay.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Play the Prime Video title, open the playback controls, select the Subtitles or Closed Caption icon, and choose Off or None. If captions remain, check the device’s own caption or accessibility settings—especially Roku and Apple TV—and make sure the text is not being added by a system-level live-caption feature.
