How to Troubleshoot YouTube Videos That Won’t Play

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by finding out whether the failure affects one video or every video, and whether it follows one device or one internet connection. Try another video, then another supported device or connection. That quick comparison usually tells you whether to investigate the video or account, your network, the browser or app, or the device itself.

Use the symptom-specific steps below rather than resetting everything at once. They cover buffering, playback errors, browser failures, mobile apps, TVs and streaming devices, and the distinctive case where the player is green but audio continues.

First, isolate what is failing

Refresh the page or reopen the app, then play a different video. If only one video fails, read the on-screen message before changing network settings. If every video fails on one device, concentrate on that device’s browser, app, software or connection. If playback fails on several devices using the same network, the connection or service path is more likely. If another network works, your original connection is the leading suspect.

YouTube recommends trying another supported device when the problem continues. Its compatibility guidance covers current versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari, together with a good internet connection; that is official compatibility guidance, not a guarantee that every other browser will fail. See YouTube’s system requirements and supported-device guidance.

Use this quick comparison

What you observe Most useful next test What the result tells you
One video fails, others play Check the exact message, sign-in state and restrictions Likely video availability or account context rather than a broken device
All videos fail on one computer Private/incognito window, another browser and a restart Points toward extensions, browser data, software or that computer
All videos buffer on one network Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or test another network Separates local network congestion from the device
Several devices fail on the same network Restart the connection and reduce other network use Suggests bandwidth, router or service-path trouble
Green picture but audible sound Try another browser and investigate hardware acceleration Suggests graphics rendering or driver trouble

Make one controlled change at a time. If you restart the router, change quality, clear cookies and reinstall the app together, you will not know which action helped. A short note of the video, device, connection and exact error makes the next comparison much easier.

When YouTube buffers, stalls or loads slowly

Buffering means the player cannot receive data quickly enough for the selected quality. The number shown by an internet speed test is only a snapshot: other devices, applications, Wi‑Fi conditions and congestion determine how much sustained capacity YouTube actually receives.

Test the connection before changing hardware

  1. Pause downloads, cloud backups, game updates and other video streams.
  2. Close unnecessary tabs, browsers and programs. YouTube notes that multiple devices using one network can reduce the speed available to the device playing the video.
  3. Restart the internet connection using the normal power or restart controls for your modem and router, then retry playback.
  4. Switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or use another trusted network for a short test. Mobile-data charges may apply.
  5. If the device and router have compatible Ethernet ports, test a wired connection. YouTube says hardwiring may help; it is a diagnostic option, not a universal cure. A Cat 6 cable is relevant only when both ends support the required connector and the wireless path is the suspected bottleneck.

Do not buy a cable, extender or new router before this comparison. A wired test can show that Wi‑Fi is the weak link, but it cannot prove that a particular brand of hardware will solve the problem. If wired and wireless playback fail identically, investigate the connection, account or device instead.

Match quality to sustained speed

YouTube Help gives these approximate sustained-speed recommendations. They are practical guidance, not a guarantee: local congestion, competing traffic and the particular stream still matter.

Playback resolution Approximate sustained speed
360p 0.7 Mbps
480p 1.1 Mbps
720p 2.5 Mbps
1080p 5 Mbps
4K UHD 20 Mbps

For the full context, see YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for video errors and its system requirements page. If playback stabilizes after selecting a lower quality, the connection may be healthy enough for that lower data rate but not for the original setting. If even low quality stalls on a second network, move on to device or account checks instead of repeatedly changing resolution.

When a wired test helps

A wired test is useful when Wi‑Fi signal quality or interference is uncertain. Connect the device directly to the router, start the same video and compare behavior. If wired playback is stable while Wi‑Fi is not, improve the wireless path—distance, placement, band selection or local interference—rather than assuming YouTube itself is unavailable. If both paths fail in the same way, the cable has ruled out only one variable; it has not proved that the router or internet provider is at fault.

Browser playback errors on a computer

Messages such as “Playback error. Tap to retry” or “Connection to server lost” can result from stale browser data, extensions, outdated software or altered network settings. Work from least disruptive to most disruptive.

  • Jadaol cat6 standard cable support Cat8 and Cat7 network and provides performance of up to 250 MHz 10Gbps and is suitable for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX (Fast Ethernet), 1000BASE-T/1000BASE-TX (Gigabit Ethernet) and 10GBASE-T (10-Gigabit Ethernet)
  • UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) patch cable with RJ45 gold-plated Connectors and are made of 100% bare copper wire, ensure minimal noise and interference
  • The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
  1. Update the browser and the computer’s operating system. Current Chrome, Firefox and Safari versions are the compatibility baseline described by YouTube.
  2. Close and reopen the browser. Close excess tabs and restart the computer.
  3. Open a private or incognito window and play the video there. This temporarily prevents ordinary extensions and much of the existing browsing state from affecting the test.
  4. If the private-window test works, disable extensions in the regular window and re-enable them one at a time. YouTube specifically notes that ad-blocking extensions may affect playback.
  5. Clear the browser’s cache and cookies using its current privacy or browsing-data controls, then sign in again if required. Menu names vary by browser version.
  6. Check whether a third-party application changed DNS settings. If you use custom DNS, security filtering or a VPN-like network utility, temporarily restore the normal configuration according to that software’s documentation and test again.

Do not delete every browser profile as a first step. A private-window comparison identifies extension and session problems without discarding saved data. If another browser plays the same video on the same computer, keep the working browser as a temporary workaround while repairing the original one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When testing extensions, change only one at a time. An ad blocker, privacy filter, script manager or security plug-in can interfere with the player even when other sites appear normal. If playback returns after one extension is disabled, update or reconfigure that extension rather than disabling every security feature permanently.

When the YouTube mobile app will not play

On a phone or tablet, update both the YouTube app and the device software before assuming the account or connection is damaged. Then follow this sequence:

  1. Close YouTube completely and reopen it.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. Try another video and, if practical, switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data.
  4. Open the device’s app settings and clear YouTube’s cache where that option exists. Labels differ by operating system and version, so use the current settings wording on your device.
  5. Sign out and back in if the failure appears tied to your account.
  6. Reinstall the app only after the less disruptive checks fail. Reinstallation can remove local app state and requires you to sign in again.

YouTube describes app-cache clearing as an Android troubleshooting step in its streaming and video-issues guidance. iOS and other platforms expose different storage controls; do not follow Android menu names literally on another operating system.

Check the phone’s remaining storage if updates or reinstalls fail, and confirm that battery-saving or data-saving settings are not deliberately restricting background network activity. Those settings are device-specific, so use the current help for your operating system rather than applying a menu path from another phone. If videos play on mobile data but not Wi‑Fi, return to the network comparison instead of repeatedly reinstalling the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TVs and streaming devices

TV interfaces differ by manufacturer, but the recovery order is consistent. First verify that the device is online and that you are signed in to the intended YouTube account. Check for YouTube and device-software updates, then reopen the app.

Perform a complete power cycle

  1. Exit YouTube and turn off the TV or streaming device.
  2. Unplug it from power for at least 30 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in, start the device and reopen YouTube.
  4. Try another video, then test another network or supported device if the problem remains.

YouTube describes unplugging for at least 30 seconds as a particularly effective way to resolve TV playback issues. The exact wording of update, cache and network menus varies, so use the manufacturer’s current interface rather than a menu path written for a different model.

  • Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5

If other apps also fail, the device’s network connection deserves priority. If only YouTube fails while other streaming apps work, update or reinstall YouTube where the platform allows it, then verify sign-in and account restrictions.

A TV that resumes after the 30-second power removal may have had a temporary app or network state, not a permanent hardware fault. Avoid factory-resetting the television until you have recorded account details and tried the simpler steps; a reset can remove installed apps, preferences and sign-ins.

A green player with audio is a separate computer problem

A green picture while sound continues is not ordinary buffering. YouTube’s green-screen guidance points to browser rendering and graphics-driver troubleshooting.

  1. Try the same video in another browser. If it works there, the original browser’s rendering path is implicated.
  2. In Chrome, turn off hardware acceleration in the browser’s settings, restart Chrome and test again. For another browser, follow that browser’s own help instructions for hardware acceleration.
  3. Update the graphics driver using the computer manufacturer’s support site. On a Mac, install available macOS updates rather than using an unverified driver-updater utility.
  4. Retest after each change so you know which setting affected playback.

Hardware acceleration can improve video performance on a healthy system, so leaving it disabled permanently is not automatically the best outcome. If disabling it fixes the green screen, keep the setting change only as long as needed or investigate a browser and graphics-driver update that restores normal rendering.

See YouTube’s green-screen troubleshooting page for the official browser and driver guidance.

When one video or account is the issue

A single unavailable video is not evidence that your router, TV or phone is broken. Read the exact message and check the viewing context first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm that you are signed in. YouTube notes that some videos or features may be unavailable to signed-out viewers.
  • Check whether the video is age-restricted. Age-restricted videos may not be appropriate for viewers under 18.
  • Check Restricted Mode, which can affect what is available to watch.
  • Try another video from the same channel. If other videos play, keep your troubleshooting focused on availability and account context.

Do not bypass an age or account restriction by repeatedly resetting devices. The displayed message is the evidence that determines the next legitimate step. If the same account restriction appears on several supported devices, changing browsers will not remove it.

Sign-in state can also differ between a browser, a mobile app and a TV. Verify the account shown in the YouTube profile menu on the device that fails, especially in a household with several accounts. If a video plays while signed out but not while signed in, compare Restricted Mode and account settings rather than replacing the network hardware.

Choose the next step by symptom

Symptom Do first Escalate to
“Playback error. Tap to retry” Refresh, try another video and test another device or network Browser/app repair if limited to one device; connection checks if all devices on one network fail
“Connection to server lost” Switch connections and reduce competing network use Router, DNS or provider investigation if the pattern persists across videos
Constant buffering Lower quality and compare sustained speed with the resolution table Network path or Wi‑Fi improvement after a second-connection test
Green image, normal audio Another browser, hardware-acceleration check and manufacturer graphics update Computer manufacturer or browser support if rendering still fails
Only one video unavailable Read the message, sign in and check age or Restricted Mode status Video owner or YouTube account help, not a hardware reset

Common troubleshooting mistakes

  • Changing too many variables: Test one device, one video and one connection at a time so the result is meaningful.
  • Trusting a single speed-test result: Compare sustained playback at the selected resolution while other devices are quiet.
  • Buying hardware immediately: A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is useful only for a compatible wired diagnostic; it is not a general YouTube fix.
  • Clearing data without a sign-in plan: Cookies and app data can sign you out and remove local preferences.
  • Installing generic driver tools: For a green player, use the computer manufacturer’s graphics-driver support or macOS updates.
  • Ignoring the exact error: Account, age and Restricted Mode messages require account checks, not repeated router resets.
  • Assuming another browser proves a service outage: If one browser works, the difference usually points to local browser state, extensions or rendering.

What to record if nothing works

Before seeking support, write down the exact error text, the device model, operating-system version, YouTube app or browser version, and whether another video plays. Also note whether another network or supported device changes the result. This turns “YouTube does not work” into a reproducible fault description.

YouTube provides an in-app feedback route after a playback problem. Include the sequence that failed and the tests that succeeded, such as “all videos fail only on this TV” or “1080p buffers on Wi‑Fi but 720p is stable on Ethernet.” Avoid reporting only a speed-test headline; include the selected resolution and whether other devices were using the connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop troubleshooting

Stop changing settings once a controlled comparison identifies the cause and playback is stable. A lower quality that plays reliably may be the appropriate temporary choice while a congested connection is resolved. A working alternate browser can be a sensible short-term path while the original browser’s extensions or cache are repaired. For a green screen, use the browser and manufacturer guidance rather than installing generic driver-updater software. For an account or age restriction, follow the displayed eligibility rules instead of treating it as a technical fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does YouTube say “Playback error. Tap to retry”?

Refresh the video, try another video, and test another supported device or connection. If the error is limited to one browser or app, update it, restart it, test a private window and then clear cache or cookies. If several devices fail on one network, investigate the connection instead.

Why does YouTube keep buffering even though my speed test looks fast?

A speed test is a snapshot. Other devices, Wi‑Fi interference, downloads and congestion can reduce sustained capacity. Pause competing traffic, lower the video quality, compare the approximate YouTube speeds—0.7 Mbps for 360p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD—and test another network.

Should I buy an Ethernet cable to fix YouTube buffering?

Only use one as an optional diagnostic when the device and router have compatible Ethernet ports. YouTube says a hardwired connection may help. If wired playback is stable but Wi‑Fi is not, improve the wireless path; buying a cable is not a universal solution.

Why does YouTube work in incognito but not in my normal browser?

The private-window result points to an extension or stored browser state. Disable extensions in the regular window, especially ad-blocking or privacy extensions, and re-enable them one at a time. Clear cache and cookies if necessary, then sign in again.

How do I fix YouTube on an Android phone?

Update YouTube and Android, close and reopen the app, restart the phone, and compare Wi‑Fi with mobile data. Android devices commonly provide a YouTube cache option in app settings. Sign out and back in or reinstall only after the less disruptive steps fail.

How long should I unplug a TV or streaming device?

Unplug it for at least 30 seconds, plug it back in, and reopen YouTube. Then check app and device updates, verify sign-in, and test another video or network if the problem continues.

What causes a green YouTube screen when audio still works?

That symptom usually involves browser rendering or graphics drivers rather than buffering. Try another browser, turn off hardware acceleration in Chrome and restart it, then update the graphics driver through the computer manufacturer or update macOS. Avoid generic driver-updater utilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can age restrictions or Restricted Mode stop one YouTube video?

Yes. Confirm that you are signed in, read the displayed message, and check age eligibility and Restricted Mode. If the same restriction follows the account across devices, changing browsers, routers or cables will not remove it.

The Bottom Line

Start with scope: one video or all videos, one device or several, one network or multiple. Then use the matching test—another video or account check, a second connection and lower quality for buffering, browser or app repair for local failures, a 30-second TV power cycle, or graphics troubleshooting for a green player. Record the exact result before escalating, and avoid buying hardware or performing a factory reset until a controlled comparison shows that it is warranted.
