Apple offers a direct way to copy eligible Apple Music playlists to YouTube Music. It is useful for switching services, but it is not a complete library migration: downloaded songs, local files, playlist folders, podcasts, audiobooks, and some shared or curated playlists stay behind.
You need an active Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription and an active YouTube Music account. The original playlists remain in Apple Music, while the copied versions appear in YouTube Music’s Library.
Who can use Apple’s transfer tool?
- An active Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription
- An active YouTube Music account
- An Apple Account in a region where Apple Music is available
- A non-child, non-Managed Apple Account
Apple’s documentation specifies a YouTube Music account; it does not state that YouTube Music Premium is required for the transfer itself.
How to copy Apple Music playlists to YouTube Music
- Open Apple’s Data & Privacy portal.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for Apple Music.
- Select Transfer a copy of your data.
- Choose the option for transferring Apple Music playlists to YouTube Music.
- Follow the prompts and sign in to YouTube Music when requested.
- Authorize the connection between your Apple and Google accounts.
- Submit the transfer request.
- Wait for Apple’s completion email, then open YouTube Music and check the Library tab.
Apple says the process usually takes a few minutes, but larger transfers can take several hours. The work happens in the background, so submitting the request does not mean the playlists will appear immediately.

The exact playlist-selection controls may vary by region and account. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose or submit the eligible playlists Apple makes available to you; do not assume that every account presents the same controls.

In other words, Apple copies playlist information and matches songs against YouTube Music’s catalog. It does not export the underlying audio or recreate your entire Apple Music library. Apple’s support documentation confirms these limitations.
What happens to your Apple Music playlists?
The originals remain intact in Apple Music. The transfer does not empty Apple Music, delete playlists, or automatically cancel your subscription. YouTube Music receives separate playlist copies, and existing content in YouTube Music is not replaced.

Apple does not promise to preserve every Apple-specific attribute, such as folder hierarchy, editorial presentation, artwork treatment, curator ownership, or every detail of collaborative permissions. Playlist folders must be recreated manually in YouTube Music.
Why some songs may be missing
YouTube Music must find a matching catalog version for each item. A track can be omitted because it is unavailable in YouTube Music, licensed differently in your region, identified differently by the two services, or not a standard catalog track at all.

- Music removed from one service for licensing reasons
There is no responsible universal match-rate promise. Search YouTube Music manually for missing tracks and add the correct album or version. Keep the Apple Music originals available until the cleanup is finished.

Changes made after the transfer do not automatically appear in the other service. Finish important playlist edits before submitting the request, then treat the YouTube Music result as an independent playlist.
Keep Apple Music active until you have received the completion email, checked your most important playlists, replaced missing songs, and confirmed that any local or purchased music is backed up elsewhere.

If Apple’s option is unavailable
YouTube Music documents an alternative in-app route:
- Open the YouTube Music app.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & data.
- Tap Transfer playlists from other apps.
- Start the transfer, sign in to the external service, and authorize access.
- Choose playlists if the source workflow supports selection, then authorize the Google Account.
Google also lists TuneMyMusic and Soundiiz as third-party options. They can be more useful when moving to Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, Amazon Music, or another destination; when selecting particular playlists, albums, artists, or liked tracks matters; or when repeated transfers are needed.
Third-party services require additional account authorization. They may impose limits on transfers, playlist size, or recurring synchronization, and Google says it does not guarantee those providers or resolve disputes with them. Review permissions and privacy terms before connecting an account.

What if your collection includes local music?
Apple’s playlist transfer does not move personally owned audio files. For those files, YouTube Music separately supports uploads through its web interface. Google lists FLAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, and WMA among the supported formats and documents uploads of up to 100,000 songs. Uploads are separate from catalog transfers and cannot be completed through the mobile app. See YouTube Music’s upload help.
Uploading files does not recreate Apple Music’s subscription catalog, automatically rebuild Apple playlists, or turn personal uploads into ordinary YouTube Music catalog tracks.
Troubleshooting
The transfer option does not appear
- Confirm that Apple Music or iTunes Match is active.
- Check that you are using the correct Apple Account.
- Make sure the Apple Account is not a child or Managed Apple Account.
- Sign out of unrelated Apple and Google accounts, then retry from the Data & Privacy portal.
- Check whether the feature is available for your region and account.
- Try YouTube Music’s Transfer playlists from other apps route.
The transfer finished but the playlists are not visible
Check YouTube Music’s Library, not only the Home screen. Confirm that Apple sent the completion email, allow additional time for a large transfer, and verify that you authorized the intended Google Account.

Only some tracks transferred
Search for the missing artist and album in YouTube Music, then add the correct edition or replace an unavailable regional, deluxe, live, or remix version. Unsupported audio such as podcasts, audiobooks, and uploads will not become catalog tracks through this process.
Which method should you use?
- Use Apple’s native tool for a straightforward Apple Music-to-YouTube Music playlist copy with less third-party account sharing.
- Use a third-party service for broader destination coverage, more granular selection, transfer reports, or ongoing cross-service workflows.
- Use YouTube Music uploads for personal audio files, understanding that uploads are separate from playlist catalog matching.
The feature was first reported in August 2024, but it should no longer be treated as a launch-day novelty. Apple’s current support documentation, dated April 18, 2025 on the retrieved English pages, still describes the transfer, and Google’s current help documentation continues to identify Apple Music as a supported source. The Bottom Line
Apple’s native tool is the simplest way to copy eligible Apple Music playlists to YouTube Music, but it is not a full migration. Expect catalog matching, missing tracks, lost folders, no file transfer, and no ongoing synchronization. Keep Apple Music until the YouTube Music copies have been checked.
