There is no single “tactical team competition.” Organizers combine different tasks, scoring systems, team sizes, terrain and equipment rules. Start by obtaining the current event packet, then build a plan around its actual events rather than a generic SWAT workout. In most formats, that means developing repeatable endurance, strength, power, agility and mobility; rehearsing concise team communication and transitions; and keeping all weapons-related work inside the organizer’s rules, qualified instruction and a controlled range.
The 2026 Texas Tactical Police Officers Association (TTPOA) SWAT Competition illustrates one format: a four-day, team-oriented event testing communication, precision shooting, physical endurance and tactical ability. The United States Army Reserve’s description of a CIOR competition illustrates another, combining shooting, an obstacle course, utility swimming and orienteering. Those examples show why your event schedule—not a broad label—must determine your preparation.
What a tactical team competition can involve
Use “tactical competition” as a category, not a standardized sport. One organizer may emphasize shooting and scenario work; another may add obstacles, swimming, navigation or long transitions between stations. Team size, permitted equipment, safety commands, scoring and eligibility can all change from one event to the next.
Two documented formats
| Event description | Published demands | Specific details |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 TTPOA SWAT Competition | Communication, precision shooting, physical endurance and tactical ability | Four-day event; some stages are blind, with critical information released only hours beforehand |
| United States Army Reserve CIOR competition description | Shooting, obstacle course, utility swimming and orienteering, with additional team tasks | A 50-meter water obstacle course with five obstacles; swimming skill, strength, coordination and flexibility are required |
TTPOA lists teams of five to six people, including one alternate, for its 2026 competition. That number is an event requirement, not a universal team standard. Likewise, the CIOR water-course dimensions and obstacle count describe that format only. Treat every number as conditional on the current organizer’s packet.

Map the event before you train
Do not choose workouts or equipment until you know what the team will actually be scored on. Ask the organizer or team captain for the latest schedule, rules and technical notices. A simple event map prevents a common mistake: becoming very fit for tasks that never appear while neglecting a scored discipline.
Collect the current packet
- Event schedule, stage descriptions and scoring method.
- Team size, alternate rules and eligibility requirements.
- Terrain, obstacle dimensions, water exposure, distances and expected weather.
- Permitted firearms, ammunition, protective equipment, communications equipment and clothing.
- Medical, waiver, licensing or certification requirements.
- Safety commands, range procedures, disqualifications and protest deadlines.
- Check-in times, equipment inspections and any mandatory briefings.
TTPOA says registered teams receive its rules and special-equipment needs in advance. It also warns that some stage information is withheld until shortly before competition. Prepare broad capabilities early, but leave room to adjust once the final instructions arrive.

For each stage, record four items:
- Task: for example, an obstacle, a swim, navigation, shooting or a timed team scenario.
- Physical or technical quality: endurance, strength, power, agility, mobility, water confidence, marksmanship or another skill named by the organizer.
- Team role: who leads the brief, carries shared equipment, tracks time or confirms completion.
- Safety constraint: range rules, water supervision, obstacle controls, protective equipment or a condition that requires a stop.
Review the matrix whenever the organizer issues an update. A blind stage is not a reason to improvise unsafe tactics; it is a reason to practice rapid, lawful planning and clear role assignment in controlled settings.
Build the physical qualities the event actually rewards
TTPOA’s four-month Tactical Performance Readiness program describes development across strength, power, agility, mobility and work capacity, with movements in multiple planes. That is a useful example of broad preparation, not a universally validated template or a benchmark for every competition. The right mix depends on the task matrix.

Aerobic endurance and repeatability
Endurance helps a team move between stages, recover between efforts and make decisions when heart rate remains elevated. Develop it progressively through activities that match the event’s demands and your current ability. If the competition involves long outdoor movement, include terrain and footwear considerations; if it is station-based, practice recovering and then performing again rather than preparing only for one long effort.
No general source establishes a universal distance, pace, heart-rate target or weekly volume for tactical competitions. A qualified coach should set progression after considering training history, injury status, age and the event calendar.

Strength
Strength preparation should reflect the objects and positions the event permits: climbing, lifting, carrying, dragging, getting over obstacles or stabilizing equipment. Train controlled technique before adding load, and avoid treating a maximum lift as proof of readiness for a multi-stage competition. The goal is useful force that can be repeated without compromising movement quality or safety.
Power
Power is the ability to apply force quickly. It may matter when an obstacle, acceleration or short burst appears, but the event packet determines how much emphasis it deserves. Introduce explosive work only after you can perform the underlying movement safely and recover from it. A coach can select an appropriate variation and stop criteria for your level.
Agility and changes of direction
Agility work should match the surfaces, footwear and space you can safely control. Progress from predictable patterns to decisions and direction changes only when the basic movement is reliable. Do not turn a conditioning drill into an imitation of a tactical engagement, and do not add weapons handling to a general agility session.
Mobility and position tolerance
Mobility supports obstacle negotiation, swimming, kneeling, crouching and getting up repeatedly. Address the ranges your event requires, while distinguishing a normal training sensation from pain or loss of control. The CIOR description specifically identifies flexibility alongside swimming skill, strength and coordination for its 50-meter, five-obstacle water course.

Water and obstacle preparation
If the packet includes a water obstacle, obtain qualified instruction and use a supervised facility. Practice swimming skill, entries and exits, coordination and strength in conditions that resemble the event only after the venue and coach have established safe controls. The Army Reserve description’s five-obstacle, 50-meter course is not a requirement for competitions that do not include a comparable water stage.
Use a progression you can recover from
Because published sources do not provide a universal periodized plan or validated training volumes, avoid copying a fixed “tactical” routine from the internet. Instead, progress one controllable variable at a time under qualified guidance: movement complexity, resistance, duration, density or environmental difficulty. Keep a record of how you respond so the plan can be reduced when fatigue, pain or poor technique appears.
Keep event skills and conditioning distinct
General conditioning can create fatigue safely. Technical skills that carry a serious consequence require a different standard: a qualified instructor, an authorized venue, the correct equipment and the event’s written procedures. Do not use exhaustion as a reason to rush unfamiliar weapons handling or to rehearse unsafe movement patterns.
Schedule recovery as part of training
- Leave enough time between demanding sessions for technique and alertness to return.
- Use easier sessions to reinforce movement quality rather than chasing exhaustion.
- Replace or modify a task when pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath or loss of coordination appears.
- Seek qualified medical evaluation for symptoms that persist, worsen or affect normal function.
- Tell the coach about prior injuries, medication, heat sensitivity or water-related concerns before training.
Train communication and coordination deliberately
Communication is a scored quality in the TTPOA description, and CIOR is presented as a team competition in which members complete events together. Fitness alone cannot fix a team that does not know who is responsible for a brief, a transition, a time check or a safety confirmation.

Assign roles before the start
For every stage, designate a leader for the brief, a person responsible for time or navigation, and owners for shared equipment or checks. Define who can call a pause for a safety concern. If the organizer changes the task, reassign roles explicitly rather than assuming everyone heard the same plan.
Practice concise communication
Use short, agreed terms for start, stop, status, handoff and problem reporting. A useful rehearsal is to have one member brief the task, another repeat the critical information, and the rest confirm their roles. This tests whether the message was understood without adding tactical procedures or weapons handling.

Rehearse transitions
Many teams lose time between tasks rather than during the task itself. In a low-risk setting, practice moving from a brief to equipment checks, from one station to the next and from effort to recovery. Record whether the next person knows what is happening, where equipment goes and when the team is ready to proceed.
Use after-action reviews
After each rehearsal, ask three questions: What was the plan? What actually happened? What single change will we test next time? Keep the discussion factual and short enough that every member contributes. Review communication, role clarity, pacing and safety compliance separately so a fast result does not hide a dangerous shortcut.

TTPOA says some stages provide critical information only hours before the event. Train the planning process rather than trying to predict a secret scenario: read the brief, identify constraints, assign roles, confirm the safety boundary, and rehearse the first transition. Do not publish or copy firing sequences, room-clearing methods or “move and shoot” instructions as generic fitness advice.
Keep weapons-related practice inside formal controls
Ordinary coordination drills should remain separate from weapons handling. Any shooting or weapon manipulation belongs under the official event rules, a properly controlled range and qualified instruction. The instructor and range procedures—not a fitness article—must determine loading, movement, target engagement, cease-fire actions, protective equipment and emergency response.
TTPOA’s communication and precision-shooting requirements show why a team must coordinate, but they do not authorize a universal procedure. If your event uses a different rule set, follow that organizer’s commands and definitions.

The reviewed event descriptions do not establish one universal medical screen or safety checklist. The following habits reduce avoidable risk without pretending to replace those requirements.

Before training
- Confirm that the venue, instructor and equipment are appropriate for the task.
- Inspect footwear, protective equipment, ropes, flotation or other task-specific gear before use.
- Explain the stop signal and emergency response to every participant.
- Warm up with movements suited to the session and check the surface, weather and water conditions.
- Use a progression that matches the least-prepared participant, not the strongest member.
During training
- Keep a qualified person responsible for the activity that carries the greatest risk.
- Separate groups when spacing, visibility or equipment control requires it.
- Stop when technique breaks down, a safety command is missed or an injury symptom appears.
- Maintain rest, hydration and environmental monitoring appropriate to the venue and conditions.
- Do not improvise with equipment that the organizer has not approved.
After training
- Record injuries, near misses, equipment failures and unclear instructions.
- Report symptoms that require evaluation instead of masking them to protect a training schedule.
- Repair, replace or quarantine defective equipment before the next session.
- Update the team’s plan when the review identifies a safety or communication gap.
Choose equipment and rulebooks by organizer, not by label
Generic tactical gear can be illegal, unsafe or simply irrelevant at a particular event. Confirm the current packet before buying or modifying equipment. Fit, compatibility, training access and the organizer’s inspection standard matter more than a product’s marketing category.
When a USPSA rulebook is relevant
USPSA’s official rules page lists current rulebooks updated in September 2026 and links printed March 2026 editions. A printed USPSA Competition Rules paperback is a sensible reference only for a reader competing under USPSA rules. It is not a general rulebook for a TTPOA SWAT event, a CIOR competition or another organizer’s format; use that event’s official rules instead.
Questions to ask before purchasing gear
- Is this exact model or configuration permitted by the current rules?
- Will it pass the organizer’s inspection and work with required safety equipment?
- Can every team member train with it safely and consistently?
- Does it create a new maintenance, fit or transport problem?
- Is the item needed for a scored task, or is it merely a generic tactical accessory?
How to use TTPOA’s four-month program as an example
TTPOA says registered competitors receive access through a training app to a four-month Tactical Performance Readiness program. The stated emphasis on strength, power, agility, mobility and work capacity demonstrates one event-specific approach to broad preparation. The page does not establish that the program is publicly available to everyone, independently validated or suitable for a different competition.
If you are eligible for that event, compare the program’s exercises and schedule with the current packet, your medical guidance and your team’s actual duties. If you are preparing for another event, use the same decision test—does the plan develop the qualities that are scored, progress at a recoverable rate and fit the permitted equipment and venue?—rather than copying the program wholesale.
Readiness checks before competition day
Do not declare a team ready because one member posts a fast workout. Review readiness against the event map:
- Each member can explain the stage’s task, personal role and stop conditions.
- The team can brief, confirm understanding and transition without contradictory instructions.
- Physical work can be repeated with controlled technique and appropriate recovery.
- Water, obstacle or terrain skills have been practiced in a supervised environment when required.
- Every item of equipment is permitted, fitted, inspected and familiar to its user.
- Any unresolved injury, medical concern or safety ambiguity has been addressed by a qualified professional or the organizer.
These are process checks, not universal performance standards. Only the organizer’s scoring and eligibility rules determine whether a team qualifies.
How to compare training options
Whether you are evaluating a coach, a facility or a written program, use the same axes:
| Question | What a strong answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Does it match the event? | Sessions map directly to the published tasks, terrain, rules and team size. |
| Does it fit the athlete? | Progression accounts for current fitness, skill, injury history and recovery. |
| Is coaching qualified? | The instructor is competent for the activity and venue, with clear emergency procedures. |
| Can the plan adjust? | Workload and exercises can be reduced or changed when fatigue, pain or event information changes. |
| Is equipment compliant? | Every item is explicitly allowed, correctly fitted and compatible with organizer requirements. |
| Can the reader access it? | Eligibility, registration limits, location and delivery method are clear. |
A plan that looks impressive but ignores the event packet is a poor match. A modest plan that develops the right qualities, preserves safety and can be repeated consistently is more useful.

Train for the competition you actually entered. Confirm the current schedule and rules, map every task to a physical quality and team role, build endurance and multi-plane strength progressively, and rehearse communication and transitions without turning ordinary practice into unsafe tactical simulation. Keep shooting and other high-consequence skills under formal instruction and venue controls. Because formats vary—from TTPOA’s four-day SWAT event to the Army Reserve’s shooting, obstacle, swimming and navigation example—adaptability and disciplined safety are more valuable than a one-size-fits-all workout.
