How to Tell Whether an Image, Video, or Voice Recording Was Made With AI

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal AI detector that can prove a file is authentic or synthetic. The most reliable approach is layered: preserve the original file, inspect any signed provenance or supported watermark, investigate where and when it first appeared, and independently verify the person or claim behind it. Visual glitches, a familiar voice, and an automated score can all be useful leads, but none is conclusive on its own.

A positive provenance signal can tell you that a supported provider or workflow is associated with a file. A missing signal cannot certify that the media is real: reposting, editing, compression, unsupported formats, or another provider may remove or bypass it.

What an AI check can—and cannot—establish

“Was this made with AI?” can mean several different questions:

  • Was all or part of the media generated by a model?
  • Was an authentic recording altered, composited, or dubbed?
  • Does the file have a trustworthy record of who created or handled it?
  • Is the story attached to the file true and correctly dated?

Those are different investigations. A provenance verifier examines signed history or a supported watermark. A forensic detector estimates whether patterns resemble manipulated media. Source checking tests the surrounding claim. None automatically answers the others. NIST’s overview of synthetic-content controls separates provenance and authentication, labeling and watermarking, detection, and evaluation because each addresses a different failure mode (NIST, 2024).

Think in terms of confidence, not a binary verdict. A strong, independently verified chain of custody may justify high confidence about where a file came from, while still saying nothing about whether the scene was staged or the accompanying caption is true. Conversely, an unmarked file may be genuine even when no verifier recognizes it.

Use this evidence-first workflow

Work from the least destructive evidence to the most interpretive. Keep a copy of every file and note what each test actually establishes.

1. Preserve the original and record its context

Download or obtain the original exported file when possible. A screenshot, screen recording, messaging-app download, or social-media repost may have been resized, re-encoded, cropped, or stripped of metadata. Keep the filename, extension, file size, creation and modification times, and a cryptographic hash if your investigation requires an auditable record.

Record the account, website, or person that supplied it; the date and time you received it; the caption or request attached to it; and any earlier versions. Save the page or message in which it appeared. Editing and redistribution can remove metadata and degrade watermarks, so the file’s path is evidence in its own right (OpenAI’s content-provenance guidance; OpenAI’s explanation of provenance signals).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Identify the media and its transformations

Before testing, establish whether you have a still image, an extracted video frame, a screen capture, a re-encoded video, or an audio clip recorded from a speaker. Note the container and codec where available. A detector validated on camera originals may behave differently on a messaging-app copy. If the file has been edited, list the operations you know about—cropping, color correction, dubbing, noise reduction, frame interpolation, or format conversion.

3. Check signed Content Credentials

Content Credentials are cryptographically signed provenance information based on the C2PA standard. A compatible viewer can show whether a participating workflow recorded a creator, tool, edit, or export event and whether the signature still verifies. Treat the result as a statement about the recorded provenance relationship, not as a declaration that the scene is true.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

Use a verifier that supports the file’s C2PA manifest and do not assume that every image or video contains one. A screenshot or ordinary re-export can break the signature. If a credential verifies, inspect the listed actions and dates rather than stopping at a green check. Ask whether the credential covers the whole file, a source asset, or only one editing step.

4. Check a supported embedded watermark

Some providers embed watermarks that their own verification service can detect. OpenAI documents checks for C2PA credentials and SynthID signals in supported images and audio (OpenAI content provenance). A positive SynthID result is provider-scoped: it indicates a signal associated with the supported system and media type, not that every AI system was ruled in or out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the check on the best-quality original you can obtain. Cropping, heavy compression, equalization, or recording a speaker through a microphone can weaken a signal. Save the verifier’s exact result and the file tested so another reviewer can reproduce it.

5. Interpret positive and negative results correctly

Result What it supports What it does not prove
Verified signed provenance A supported creator, tool, or processing event is linked to the file and the signature has not been invalidated. That the depicted event happened, the caption is accurate, the content is unedited in every respect, or the user owns it.
Supported watermark detected The verifier found a signal associated with the provider and format it supports. That no other tools were used, that the media is truthful, or that unsupported providers were excluded.
No credential or watermark detected Only that this verifier found no signal it can validate in this file. Authenticity. Metadata may have been stripped, the signal degraded, the format may be unsupported, or another provider may have created the file.

OpenAI explicitly describes a negative provenance result as “not detected,” not as proof that content is human-made (OpenAI). The same logic applies to any provider-specific checker.

6. Reconstruct the source and timeline

Find the earliest publication you can document. Compare copies for changes in framing, audio, subtitles, logos, and timestamps. Check whether an accountable original source—such as the named photographer, broadcaster, institution, or person recorded—can provide the uncompressed file or contemporaneous details.

Separate the media from its claim. A genuine photograph can be paired with a false date or location; an AI-generated clip can be presented as a real event; and an authentic interview can be edited into a misleading excerpt. Seek independent reporting or records that do not simply repeat the same upload. Provenance helps establish handling history, while source investigation establishes context.

How to assess images

Inspect metadata, but do not treat it as a certificate

EXIF fields may contain a camera model, lens, GPS coordinates, software name, orientation, and timestamps. Their presence can help connect a file to a device or workflow. Their absence is normal after many uploads, and fields can be rewritten. A software tag naming an image editor shows that the file passed through that software; it does not reveal which pixels were generated or whether an edit was harmless.

Look for inconsistencies that merit a closer check

Zoom in on text, reflections, repeated textures, object boundaries, jewelry, hands, and shadows. Compare lighting direction and perspective across the scene. These observations can prioritize questions for a forensic review, but they are not a universal checklist. Real cameras produce blur, lens distortion, rolling-shutter effects, and unusual lighting; AI systems can also improve rapidly and may imitate those artifacts.

Test the claim separately

Ask whether the location, weather, architecture, uniforms, or event schedule fit the stated date. Search for earlier or wider views and for an original source willing to identify the file. A visually flawless image with an impossible timeline is still misleading; a technically odd image may be a genuine low-quality capture.

How to assess video

Examine the whole sequence, not a single frame

Review cuts, camera motion, focus changes, lip movement, reflections, and continuity from beginning to end. Check whether the audio track starts or stops unnaturally at edits and whether subtitles or logos change between versions. Extracting a suspicious frame can help you compare copies, but a single frame cannot establish how the video was produced.

Use specialized warning signs cautiously

NIST’s identity-proofing guidance lists high latency, synchronization problems, and inconsistent skin tone or resolution as indicators that trained proofing agents may examine during a remote session (NIST SP 800-63A). These examples come from a controlled identity-proofing setting. They are prompts for escalation, not a reliable universal test for every internet video. Network delay, camera auto-exposure, poor lighting, and ordinary editing can create similar symptoms.

Check versions and compression history

Compare the highest-quality copy with reposts. Frame-rate conversion, platform compression, and screen recording can create ringing, block artifacts, or audio drift that look synthetic. Conversely, those operations can hide subtle manipulation cues. A detector’s performance on a clean test file should not be assumed to transfer to a heavily processed social-media copy.

How to assess a voice recording

Do not authenticate a caller by voice alone

A familiar voice is not sufficient for a financial transfer, password reset, urgent payment, gift-card request, or disclosure of sensitive information. End the call and contact the person through a number or channel you already trust. Verify the request using a second person or an established approval process. This protects you even when no detector is available.

The Federal Trade Commission describes voice-clone defenses in three layers—prevention and authentication, real-time detection, and post-use evaluation—and cautions that no single solution is sufficient (FTC, April 2024).

Inspect the recording’s history

Ask who recorded it, on what device, and whether it was transmitted as an original file or captured from a loudspeaker. Check for abrupt room-tone changes, repeated background noise, unnatural pauses, clipped consonants, or timing that does not match visible mouth movement. These can result from editing, noise suppression, poor microphones, or a real speaker, so use them to decide what to verify next rather than to announce a verdict.

Use provider-scoped audio provenance where available

A supported watermark check can provide useful evidence for certain generated-audio workflows. It cannot detect every voice-cloning system, and a negative result cannot authenticate a recording. Preserve the original audio because re-recording through another device may destroy the signal.

What automated AI detectors really tell you

Detector output is conditional evidence. Before relying on a score, identify:

  • Which media types and file formats the system supports.
  • Which generators, manipulation methods, languages, and codecs were represented in its evaluation.
  • Whether the test set included genuine as well as forged material.
  • How the system behaves after resizing, compression, noise reduction, dubbing, or other post-processing.
  • Its documented false-positive and false-negative rates, confidence calibration, and version date.
  • Whether a human reviewer is required for borderline or high-impact decisions.

NIST calls for representative testing against both forged and genuine media, documentation of errors, and manual review in identity-proofing systems (SP 800-63A). Its Guardians of Forensic Evidence program emphasizes that methods must generalize to post-processed evidence and be repeatedly validated as generation techniques change (NIST Guardians of Forensic Evidence).

Tool category Primary question Best use Key limitation
Signed provenance verifier Is a supported chain of creation or editing events cryptographically attached to this file? Checking an original file with an intact manifest. No manifest may exist; verified provenance does not prove the story is true.
Provider watermark verifier Does this file contain a signal from the provider and format the verifier supports? Confirming a positive signal on an original image or audio file. Not universal; transformations can weaken signals and “not detected” is inconclusive.
Forensic AI detector Do measured patterns resemble the manipulations or generators represented in its tests? Prioritizing expert review and investigative leads. Performance can change with new generators, codecs, and post-processing; errors are possible.
Source and timeline investigation Who first published this, and does the claimed event fit independent evidence? Verifying context, date, location, and accountability. It may not reveal the exact generation method of the file.

Common mistakes and better decisions

“The detector says 98%, so it is fake”

Ask what the percentage means, which version produced it, and whether the file matches the tested conditions. Treat the score as a reason to seek corroboration or expert review, not as a courtroom-style probability that the media is synthetic.

“There is no watermark, so it is real”

Absence can reflect an unsupported provider, a stripped manifest, a degraded watermark, or an ordinary camera file. Record the negative result and continue with source and claim verification.

“One strange hand, frame, or syllable proves AI”

Compression, motion blur, low light, editing, and microphone artifacts can produce the same appearance. Look for a pattern across the complete file and compare with an original.

“Metadata proves who made it”

Metadata is editable and often removed. Use it as one link in a chain, ideally alongside a signed credential and an accountable source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A familiar voice means the request is genuine”

Authenticate the person and the request through an independent channel before taking action. This remains the safest response to suspected voice-clone fraud.

A practical decision path

  1. Preserve: save the highest-quality original, context, and any earlier versions.
  2. Classify: note media type, format, edits, and whether it is a repost or screen capture.
  3. Verify provenance: check compatible C2PA credentials and supported watermarks; save exact results.
  4. Investigate origin: locate the earliest publication and contact an accountable original source.
  5. Check the claim: compare independent reporting, dates, locations, and other versions.
  6. Escalate clues: document visual or audio anomalies and use a detector only if its scope and validation fit the file.
  7. Require human review: for identity, employment, legal, safety, or financial decisions, have a qualified reviewer examine the evidence and the detector’s error limits.
  8. Authenticate requests separately: especially for voice calls, use a trusted callback or second channel before acting.

The outcome should be phrased precisely: “A supported provenance signal links this file to a particular workflow,” “No supported signal was found,” “The source and timeline remain unverified,” or “The evidence is consistent with manipulation but not conclusive.” Precision prevents a technical clue from becoming an unsupported accusation.

When to stop and seek specialist help

Escalate rather than publish or act when the file could affect someone’s safety, reputation, immigration status, employment, a legal proceeding, or a large payment. Preserve originals and chain of custody, avoid repeatedly re-encoding the evidence, and consult a qualified digital-forensics examiner or the relevant platform or institution. A detector result without the underlying file, version, test conditions, and error information is weak evidence for a high-stakes decision.
