The shortcut is simple, but capturing the actual Netflix video frame is not guaranteed. On Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android, you can use the device’s normal screenshot command. However, Netflix’s protected playback may cause the saved video area to appear black or prevent the capture altogether. Menus, title pages, subtitles, and other interface elements are more likely to be captured successfully.
Why Netflix screenshots sometimes turn black
Netflix uses protected playback for licensed video. Depending on the device, app, browser, graphics hardware, display connection, and operating system, the screenshot tool may capture the surrounding screen while excluding the protected video layer.

That is why a screenshot can show Netflix controls or subtitles while the movie or documentary itself appears as a black rectangle. If Netflix is already displaying a black picture before you take the screenshot, the cause may instead be a playback, browser, driver, cable, or mirroring problem. Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance covers these issues at its black-screen support page.
So, can you screenshot Netflix? Sometimes. The operating system can usually start a screenshot, but no single shortcut is guaranteed to capture every protected Netflix frame.

How to screenshot Netflix on Windows
- Open Netflix in a supported browser or the official Windows app.
- Pause the video at the frame you want.
- Click away from the player or wait for the playback controls to disappear.
- Press Windows key + Shift + S.
- Choose Rectangular snip, then drag around the desired area.
- Select the Snipping Tool notification to edit and save the image.
Microsoft documents Windows + Shift + S as the shortcut for opening Snipping Tool. The utility also supports free-form, window, and full-screen captures. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
Full-screen alternative
On supported Windows configurations, press Windows key + PrtScn. The image is generally saved under Pictures > Screenshots. Keyboard layouts vary; Microsoft lists alternative Print Screen combinations at its Print Screen shortcut guide.
If the saved image contains a black Netflix video but captures menus correctly, the shortcut worked. The protected playback layer was likely not made available to the capture.

- Pause Netflix at the desired frame and wait for the controls to fade.
- Press Shift + Command + 4.
- Drag over the part of the screen you want to capture.
- Release the pointer. macOS normally saves the image to the desktop.
For other capture types, use:
- Shift + Command + 3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift + Command + 4: capture a selected area.
- Shift + Command + 4, then Space: capture a window or menu.

If an area capture is black, test ordinary websites and non-video content first. Also update macOS and the browser, and temporarily disconnect unusual external-display arrangements. AirPlay, Sidecar, screen mirroring, and some Mac-to-TV configurations can add further playback restrictions; Netflix discusses these display issues in its support documentation.
How to screenshot Netflix on iPhone and iPad
- Without a Home button: press the side button and volume-up button together, then release.
- With a Home button: press the side or top button and Home button together, then release.
Tap the thumbnail that appears to crop, annotate, or share the screenshot. Button layouts can differ by model, so Apple’s device-specific screenshot and screen-recording guidance takes precedence.
Netflix may produce a black video area, show a restriction message, or prevent the capture. The Netflix home screen, title details, and other non-video pages may still screenshot normally. Screen recording is not a dependable substitute because protected playback can be excluded from recordings as well.

How to screenshot Netflix on Android
- Pause Netflix at the point you want.
- Press Power + Volume Down simultaneously.
- Release both buttons quickly.
- Open the preview or your Photos/Gallery app to crop and save the image.
Many Android phones use this combination, but manufacturers may provide alternatives such as a three-finger swipe or palm gesture. If it does not work, use the instructions for your phone’s manufacturer and Android version. Google’s general guidance is available at its Android screenshot help page.

The Netflix app may return a completely black image or block the screenshot. Android behavior can vary across phone models, operating-system releases, security configurations, and Netflix app versions.
What to do if your Netflix screenshot is black
Use this quick diagnostic sequence:
- Capture a non-video website. If every screenshot is black, investigate the device or screenshot tool.
- Capture Netflix’s title page or menus. If those work but the video does not, protected playback is the likely explanation.
- Check Netflix playback itself. If the video is black before capture, follow Netflix’s playback troubleshooting rather than changing screenshot shortcuts.
- Update software. Install current operating-system, browser, Netflix-app, and—on computers—graphics-driver updates.
- Remove display complications. Temporarily disconnect docks, external monitors, HDMI adapters, AirPlay, Sidecar, or screen mirroring and test again.
- Try a selected-area capture. This can resolve an ordinary window-capture issue, but it is not a guaranteed way around protected playback.
When Netflix menus capture normally and only the moving picture is black, repeatedly changing screenshot utilities is unlikely to solve the underlying restriction.
Does changing browsers or disabling hardware acceleration help?
A different browser can use a different playback and DRM path, so results may vary. But there is no browser that is universally guaranteed to capture Netflix frames. Do not treat disabling hardware acceleration as a standard fix. Depending on the version and hardware, it may change playback behavior, increase processor use, reduce quality, cause playback errors, or stop having any effect after an update.

Can screen recorders, OBS, or extensions capture Netflix?
Usually, recording Netflix is no more reliable than taking a screenshot. A recorder may capture audio and interface elements while leaving the video black. OBS, QuickTime, Snipping Tool, remote-desktop capture, and browser extensions can encounter the same protected-video limitation.
Avoid applications advertised as DRM bypasses, Netflix downloaders, or guaranteed “black-screen fixes.” They cannot be recommended as reliable solutions and may create malware, account-security, policy, or copyright risks. Be especially cautious if an extension requests Netflix credentials.

Technical ability to save a frame is separate from permission to publish or distribute it. - Netflix’s official title artwork or thumbnail, where its terms and your intended use permit it.
- Authorized press stills or media resources.
- Official trailers and promotional images supplied by the rights holder.
- Requesting permission from the studio, distributor, publicist, or Netflix media-relations team.
- Using a timestamp and textual description instead of reproducing the frame.

Does Netflix block screenshots on iPhone?
iPhone and iPad screenshots use the normal Apple button combinations, but Netflix may obscure or block the protected video while allowing other interface elements to appear.
Can OBS record Netflix?
OBS may record audio or controls while excluding the video frame. It should not be treated as a dependable or appropriate way to defeat protected playback.
Can I use a Netflix screenshot in a YouTube video or article?
Capturing an image does not establish permission to republish it. Check the relevant rights and obtain authorization when needed, or use approved promotional artwork instead.
