Apple Podcasts syncs your library when every device uses the same Apple Account and has Sync Library enabled. This carries followed shows, channel subscriptions, stations, and current playback position between an iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It does not necessarily copy each device’s downloaded audio files, so episodes needed offline may have to be downloaded again on each device.
What syncs—and what does not
Apple documents synchronization for the following account-level information:

Apple’s Sync Library documentation explicitly names followed shows, channel subscriptions, stations, and current play position. Its scope does not promise migration of a complete local download cache. In practical terms, a show can appear in your Library on an iPad while its episodes still need to be downloaded there.

- Sign in to the same Apple Account on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Family Sharing, shared iCloud storage, or a shared Apple Music plan is not a substitute for matching account identities.
- Install and open Apple Podcasts on each device.
- Connect each device to the internet while the first update completes.
- Make sure there is enough storage for any automatic downloads.
- Remember that a podcast subscription bought directly from a publisher or another app may require that publisher’s own account or connection process.
Turn on Sync Library on iPhone
iOS 18 or later
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Podcasts.
- Turn on Sync Library.
- Open Podcasts and leave it online while your Library updates.
iOS 17 or earlier
Use Settings → Podcasts → Sync Library. The setting moved under Apps in iOS 18.

Turn on Sync Library on iPad
On iPadOS 18 or later, go to Settings → Apps → Podcasts and enable Sync Library. On iPadOS 17 or earlier, use Settings → Podcasts → Sync Library. Open the app afterward and check Library or Listen Now.
Turn on Sync Library on Mac
- Open the Podcasts app.
- In the menu bar, choose Podcasts → Settings.
- Open General.
- Select Sync Library.
This control is inside Podcasts settings, not necessarily in the Mac’s general iCloud settings. Apple’s current menu paths are listed in its Podcasts user guide.
Make episodes available offline on every device
After syncing, use the download control on the episode itself on each device where you need offline listening. A download made on an iPhone should be treated as a local copy; it is not a guarantee that the same audio file has been copied to the iPad or Mac.
You can also configure automatic downloads separately on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Apple’s automatic-download guide explains how to choose how many episodes are downloaded and retained. Policies can differ by device, and storage is consumed independently. Apple says the Downloaded section displays an indicator when podcast episodes occupy 15% or more of a device’s storage; that is an indicator, not a universal deletion limit.

Removing a download normally removes the local file without requiring you to unfollow the show. If an old episode has disappeared from the show’s RSS feed, syncing cannot recreate it; it may no longer be available to download.
Use Apple Podcasts on the web as a check
Sign in to Apple Podcasts on the web with the same Apple Account. Apple says the web experience can show your Library, followed shows, subscriptions, Up Next, and playback progress. It is useful diagnostically:
- If a show or position is missing on the web too, the account-level update may not have completed.
- If it appears on the web but not on one device, the problem is more likely local to that app or device.
When you change devices
- Sign in to the new iPhone, iPad, or Mac with the same Apple Account.
- Enable Sync Library.
- Wait for followed shows, subscriptions, stations, and playback position to appear.
- Download episodes required for offline use.
- Review automatic-download settings and available storage on the new device.
- Before switching back and forth, pause on the old device and allow its latest position to update.
Troubleshoot podcasts that are not syncing
1. Verify the account
Compare the Apple Account identity on all devices. Do not infer a match from Family Sharing or shared services.

Check the version-appropriate settings path above on every device. Older iOS and iPadOS versions place Podcasts directly in Settings; version 18 and later place it under Apps.

3. Give the apps a normal refresh
Use a reliable Wi-Fi or cellular connection, open Podcasts on each device, move between Library and Listen Now, and allow time for the cloud update. If a view remains stale, close and reopen the app. These are practical troubleshooting steps, not a promise of instant synchronization.
4. Identify the type of failure
- Show missing from Library: Check the Apple Account and Sync Library setting.
- Show is present but episode will not play offline: Download that episode on the affected device.
- Playback position is wrong: Stop playback elsewhere, let the current device update, then reopen the episode.
- Only Up Next differs: Apple confirms Up Next is available on the web, but does not provide a blanket guarantee that every queue conflict resolves identically across all releases.
- Old episode unavailable: Check whether the publisher still exposes it in the RSS feed.
Avoid starting with sign-outs, deleting the Podcasts app, or deleting your library. Those actions can remove local downloads or complicate subscriptions; confirm the account, settings, and episode availability first.
RSS, private feeds, and paid channels
Apple Podcasts can follow a show by RSS URL, and Apple says playback can sync across supported Apple devices. Private feeds may still require authentication or a separate publisher account. Likewise, an Apple Podcasts channel subscription and a membership purchased directly from a publisher are not automatically the same thing. Apple Podcasts is the simplest choice if you stay within Apple’s ecosystem and mainly need follows, subscriptions, and playback position. Consider a dedicated service if you regularly use Android, Windows, or Linux; need a cloud-managed queue, filters, or playlists; or want to migrate listening data between platforms.

Pocket Casts is the most relevant cross-platform alternative. Its official listing describes cloud synchronization for subscriptions, Up Next, listening history, playback, and filters, with apps and web access across more platforms. Pocket Casts publishes current plans at pocketcasts.com/plans; prices vary by country and billing channel. Its desktop and web interfaces can differ from mobile Smart Playlists, so identical behavior should not be assumed.
Overcast is an Apple-focused alternative with Smart Speed, Voice Boost, playlists, offline downloads, Apple Watch, and CarPlay support. It is less suitable when Android or Windows access is the main requirement. Check the current App Store listing for supported operating-system versions and pricing before subscribing.

Why did my subscriptions sync but not my downloads?
Sync Library carries account information such as follows, subscriptions, stations, and playback position. Offline audio should be treated as a local copy, so download the episode on each device where you need it.

Does Apple Podcasts sync listening position?
Apple explicitly lists current playback position as synchronized data, although updates can take time and conflicting activity on multiple devices can produce an unexpected position.
Can I sync Apple Podcasts to Windows or Android?
Apple’s built-in Sync Library is intended for supported Apple devices and the web. If you need a regular Android or Windows workflow, use a podcast service with its own cross-platform sync account.
Why is my Up Next queue different?
Up Next is available on Apple Podcasts on the web, but Apple does not promise that every queue state or conflict will be identical across every device and software release.
How do I stop automatic downloads filling storage?
Reduce the number of episodes retained or disable automatic downloads in Podcasts settings on the affected device, then remove local downloads you no longer need. The 15% indicator is a warning about storage use, not a universal deletion threshold.
Can I use Apple Podcasts on the web?
Yes. Sign in at podcasts.apple.com with the same Apple Account to check Library contents, follows, subscriptions, Up Next, and playback progress.
Can a removed podcast episode be recovered through syncing?
Usually not. If the publisher has removed or changed the episode in its RSS feed, synchronization cannot restore an audio file that is no longer offered.
