To switch videos automatically during a Raspberry Pi YouTube Live stream, keep one encoder connected to YouTube and change the video playing inside it. In OBS Studio, use a VLC Video source for an ordered playlist that can loop, or use separate Media Sources and scenes when you want to choose clips deliberately. The stream stays live because the encoder keeps sending; the clip changes inside the encoder.
Choose how the videos should change
| Approach | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS VLC Video playlist | Playing a sequence of clips automatically | The OBS source can play a list of video items, loop the list, and shuffle it. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| OBS Media Sources and scenes | Deliberate selection among separate clips or scene layouts | Add each local video as a Media Source and arrange it in a scene. This is not, by itself, a timed schedule for switching between scenes. |
For a straightforward rotating playlist, use the VLC Video source. Leave shuffle off for the listed order and enable loop if the playlist should repeat. If you need clips to change at particular times rather than simply advance through a list, you will need a suitable scene or automation setup; test the exact method on your Pi rather than assuming playlist playback provides scheduled switching. OBS documents the source controls, but not Raspberry Pi performance or guaranteed seamless transitions. OBS Media Sources documentation.
Set up the Pi and OBS
- Check compatibility first. Choose an OBS installation supported by your Raspberry Pi model and operating system, then confirm VLC availability for that same setup if you plan to use the playlist source. Compatibility and encoding performance depend on the Pi, OS, resolution, codec, and software build; there is no single installation path or performance guarantee for every Pi.
- Prepare the media. Put the video files where the Pi can read them and test each file in the chosen source. Check picture, audio, aspect ratio, and how playback advances or repeats. A file that plays on another computer is not proof that it will decode smoothly on this Pi.
- Create the OBS scene. Add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist for automatic sequential playback. Turn shuffle off for a fixed order; turn it on only if a randomized order is wanted. Enable loop to repeat the list. Alternatively, add individual Media Sources to scenes for manual selection.
- Connect OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in screenshots, shared configuration files, or logs. YouTube explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS and check the outgoing preview for both video and audio. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in YouTube Live Control Room and click “Go live” there. Confirm that the clip advances as intended before leaving the setup unattended.
- End the broadcast cleanly. Stop the encoder output when the event is finished. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat that as a guarantee for longer streams. YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.
What Raspberry Pi documentation does—and does not—establish
Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes command-line and GStreamer streaming pipelines, not an end-to-end OBS playlist-to-YouTube setup. It includes examples using MPEG-2 Transport Stream encapsulation for some network-streaming cases, and a Pi 5 GStreamer variation using x264enc; an example for Pi 4B or earlier uses v4l2h264enc. These examples are not ready-made YouTube Live playlist commands and should not be substituted for configuring OBS’s YouTube output. Raspberry Pi documentation: Streaming video with Raspberry Pi camera software.
Do not use old OMXPlayer guides as the default for a new setup. The OMXPlayer project says it has been deprecated since 2020, directs development effort toward VLC, and lists limitations including lack of support with 64-bit kernels. OMXPlayer project README.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep YouTube HLS requirements separate from OBS setup
You do not need to configure a beginner OBS workflow as HLS simply because YouTube has HLS ingestion guidance. Google’s HLS requirements are for encoder vendors: they call for muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, a closed GOP, and frame rates up to 60 fps. The guide describes HLS as useful for premium, high-quality or high-resolution streams with relatively higher latency. These are HLS-specific requirements, not universal settings for every OBS stream. Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- The VLC playlist source is missing or unavailable: install VLC that matches the OBS architecture. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installation if the source is still unavailable.
- The stream does not connect: check that the stream URL and key were copied from the intended YouTube event into the encoder’s stream settings. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- YouTube shows a preview but the scheduled event is not live: for a scheduled broadcast, click “Go live” in Live Control Room after the encoder preview appears.
- A clip has no picture, no sound, or will not advance: test that specific file in the selected OBS source and check its audio and playback behavior. Try another file to determine whether the issue is tied to a particular media file or to the Pi’s decoding capacity.
- Playback stutters or the Pi struggles: reduce the media resolution or frame rate and retest, or use a Pi and software combination that can handle the chosen files and output. No single resolution or frame rate is established as reliable for every model.
- The list repeats unexpectedly or plays in the wrong order: check the source’s loop and shuffle controls. Loop repeats the list; shuffle changes its order.
- The broadcast stops when you leave or turn off the Pi: in this setup the Pi and encoder are responsible for sending the live output. They must remain running and connected for the stream to continue.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of prerecorded videos but you do not want a Pi and encoder running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
