To switch prerecorded videos automatically in a 24/7 YouTube stream, use a playout system to schedule or sequence the files and an encoder to send their continuous output to YouTube Live. YouTube receives the stream; it does not provide a universal control for choosing and transitioning between video files. You can run playout and encoding locally, or use a hosted service that handles the continuous stream in the cloud.
How automatic switching works
Think of the setup as two linked jobs. The playout system decides which file plays next and how one file transitions to another. The encoder sends that resulting audio-and-video feed to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to deliver a feed, not how to build a playlist or switch local files (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- Playout: Stores or accesses the videos, arranges their order, and handles transitions or looping.
- Encoding and ingest: Sends the continuous feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key.
- Monitoring: Confirms that the feed remains healthy and viewers can watch it.
Automatic start and stop settings in YouTube concern the encoder stream itself. They are not a playlist scheduler for switching between files (YouTube Help: Enable or disable auto-start and auto-stop). The exact playlist, transition, restart, and recovery controls depend on the playout software or service you choose.
Choose where switching and streaming will happen
Local playout and encoder
A local playout application or dedicated system sequences the videos, while an encoder sends the feed to YouTube. This gives you control over the media and schedule, but the equipment and network connection that sustain the stream must remain available. If you use a hardware video encoder, check its model-specific documentation: YouTube recognizes hardware encoders as a way to send a stream, but that does not mean a given model can select or switch video files on its own (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; YouTube encoder guidance).

Hosted continuous-stream service
A hosted service can run prerecorded video continuously without relying on your local computer to stay on. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos (YouTube verified encoders). Check the service’s current documentation for playlist behavior, transitions, recovery, monitoring, storage, and pricing before choosing it; the directory entry alone does not establish those details.
What to compare
- Where files are stored and how they are uploaded or updated.
- How schedules, playlists, transitions, and looping are controlled.
- Whether the local computer must remain on, and what happens during a home internet or power outage.
- What monitoring and recovery controls are available, including support for a backup encoder if you need one.
- How recordings are archived and what ongoing operating costs apply.

Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Enable live streaming on the channel. If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Use the event or stream configuration intended for the continuous broadcast.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s address and password. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; YouTube Help: Enable or disable auto-start and auto-stop).
- Configure the playout separately. Add the files, order or schedule them, set the desired transitions and looping behavior, and route the output to the encoder. These controls vary by product; YouTube’s cited setup pages do not prescribe a universal file-switching sequence.
- Run a test before relying on unattended playback. Check the Live Control Room preview, sound and picture, the channel and watch pages, and a mobile device. Monitor stream quality and test backup-encoder failover if you have a backup (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues).
Protect the stream’s content and archive
Check rights before scheduling videos
Confirm that you have the necessary rights to stream each documentary, clip, soundtrack, and other included material on YouTube. A playlist that plays automatically does not change the rights status of its files. Check YouTube’s current policies and your rights documentation before putting a program into a continuous rotation.

Keep your own recording
Do not rely on YouTube as the sole archive for a 24/7 stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; it recommends keeping a local archive backup (YouTube Help: Archive live streams). For a continuous broadcast, make a separate recording plan and verify that it has enough storage and can run for the duration you need.
