OBS does not document an automatic rule that switches to a designated backup playlist when a playlist file is missing. The dependable built-in recovery is to prepare a separate scene with media files you know are available, then switch to that scene if the main file cannot be used. For an ordered playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source, add the main clip and fallback clips in order, and leave shuffle off.
Choose the recovery method that fits your show

Build an ordered playlist with VLC Video
1. Check VLC and OBS compatibility
OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. If VLC Video is absent from the source list, check the VLC installation and architecture before troubleshooting the playlist.
2. Add the source and arrange the files
- In OBS, open the scene where the playlist should play.
- In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video.
- Open the source properties and add the main video and the fallback clips you want available, arranging them in the intended playback order.
- Leave Shuffle off if the sequence matters.
- Set playlist looping according to whether the list should restart after it reaches its end. Looping controls what happens when playback reaches the end of the list; it is not a missing-file fallback setting.
OBS describes VLC Video as playlist-capable, unlike the single-file Media Source workflow. Media Source options such as looping an individual file or restarting playback when visible likewise govern playback, not selection of a designated backup after a missing-file error. Set up a separate backup scene
Keep recovery media independent
Create a second scene for recovery and add only media you have confirmed exists and is accessible to the computer running OBS. That could be a known-good clip or a separate VLC Video playlist. Keep the primary and backup scene contents distinct so a missing primary file does not also undermine the fallback.

Switch when the main file is unavailable
If OBS reports a missing file or the intended source cannot play, select the backup scene in the Scenes panel. Before going live, check that its video and audio behave as intended. OBS’s missing-files mechanism reports missing playlist paths, but that behavior should not be treated as a promise that OBS will automatically switch scenes or fail over to a chosen backup.

- Confirm the plugin supports your installed OBS version and that its current controls match the condition you need.
- Build a macro using an appropriate File or Media condition and a Switch scene action. The exact condition, source state, and action depend on your setup; the listing does not provide a validated recipe specifically for missing playlist files.
- Save your scene collection, make the main file genuinely unavailable, and test the macro before relying on it live.
Do not assume a file condition detects every playback failure. A file may exist but still fail to decode, be inaccessible due to permissions, or be unavailable at the moment OBS needs it. Verify the behavior you intend to cover.
Consider a third-party playlist source only if its trade-offs fit
Media Playlist Source is a third-party alternative listed on the OBS Forums. Its listing shows version 0.1.3, updated April 13, 2025. The notes for that version say automatic folder refresh was not implemented; saving the settings again can refresh folder contents. Test the missing-file case before a live stream
- Save the OBS scene collection before changing files or macro settings.
- Temporarily make the main file unavailable, then observe the message and behavior from the actual source and OBS version you use.
- Confirm that the backup scene appears when selected, that its media paths resolve on the streaming computer, and that both picture and audio are correct.
- If using a macro, confirm that the intended condition triggers the intended scene switch, and that it does not switch unexpectedly during normal playback.
- Restore the main file and verify the normal show path again.
Troubleshoot common problems
VLC Video is missing from the Sources list
Install VLC, then confirm its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
A playlist item is missing or does not play
Check the path and confirm the file is available to the computer running OBS. OBS’s source implementation reports missing playlist paths through its missing-files mechanism; a report is not the same as automatic recovery.

The playlist order is wrong
Reorder the playlist items in VLC Video’s properties and turn shuffle off when a fixed sequence is required.
The playlist ends and does not restart
Check the playlist loop option. It controls restarting after the list ends, not what happens when an item is missing.

A macro does not switch scenes
Recheck the File or Media condition, the source state it observes, and the Switch scene action in the plugin version installed. Test with the primary file actually unavailable, then refine the macro; do not rely on an untested automation during a live show.
