You can show a YouTube Live loop in vertical 9:16 by enabling YouTube’s dual-stream layout in Live Control Room, or by sending separate horizontal and vertical feeds from a third-party encoder. Set up the vertical output before you start the stream; YouTube says it cannot be added after the stream is live. For a typical existing 16:9 loop, start with YouTube’s built-in layout and check the vertical preview to make sure cropping does not cut off important content.
Choose how to make the loop vertical
YouTube’s built-in Live Control Room layout is the simplest route when you want YouTube to create a vertical version of a horizontal stream. Its default is a center crop, but you can adjust the framing or choose another layout. If you use a third-party encoder, YouTube’s documented dual-stream workflow requires separate horizontal and vertical outputs sent to their corresponding stream keys.
| Option | How it handles the picture | What you configure |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live Control Room | Choose Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked; adjust zoom and position in the canvas. | Edit the scheduled stream’s vertical preview before going live. |
| Third-party encoder | The encoder supplies matching horizontal and vertical feeds. | Choose Encoder and RTMP(S), then use the second stream key for the vertical output. |
For a loop made for a wide screen, inspect the vertical preview before choosing a layout. A center crop can remove content near the sides; Fit to phone width or Stacked may suit that footage better. The result depends on the composition of your video, so preview it rather than assuming a layout will preserve every important detail.
Set up a vertical layout in Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer. Select Create → Go live.
- Open the scheduled stream. In Live Control Room, go to the Manage tab and select the stream you prepared.
- Open the vertical preview layout controls. Choose Edit layout in the vertical preview.
- Choose and frame the layout. Select Center crop, Fit to phone width, or Stacked. Use the canvas to adjust zoom and position, then inspect the preview for cut-off titles, faces, captions, or other edge content.
- Keep dual stream enabled if you want both formats. YouTube can provide horizontal and vertical versions at the same time. To disable the vertical stream, YouTube documents turning off Dual stream in the Stream tab’s settings.
- Start only after checking the preview. Configure the vertical format before going live; it cannot be added after the stream has started.
If you edit the layout in the canvas, YouTube says it can continue to be adjusted while live. Still, make the intended framing changes and verify them in preview before starting.

Set up dual output with a third-party encoder
Use this route when your encoder can provide distinct horizontal and vertical feeds. Changing the aspect ratio of the source in YouTube Studio does not itself reconfigure an external encoder; the matching formats must be sent to the corresponding stream keys.
- Open the stream in Live Control Room and go to the Stream tab.
- Change the vertical preview setting from Auto to Encoder.
- Select RTMP(S) for the encoder workflow.
- Choose the second stream key for the vertical output. Configure your encoder to send the horizontal feed to the horizontal key and the portrait feed to the vertical key.
- Check both feeds in Live Control Room before starting. Go live from YouTube Studio only after the output and framing are correct.
YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the setup context in its guide to creating a live stream with an encoder. The specific dual-stream and vertical-key workflow is described in YouTube’s live-streaming help.

What viewers see in dual-stream mode
With dual stream enabled, subscribers receive one go-live notification and share a stream URL. Viewers in the YouTube mobile Shorts feed see the vertical version; other viewers see the horizontal version. Both formats use the same live chat. Vertical live streams may also appear while people browse Shorts in the YouTube mobile app, subject to YouTube’s display and eligibility rules. These details are documented in YouTube’s Live Control Room guidance.
Check the stream before starting
- Preview the composition: confirm that the vertical framing keeps the important subject, titles, and other details visible.
- Test before the event: YouTube recommends preparing ahead and checking the Live Control Room preview before starting.
- Monitor audio and video: check quality in the preview and keep an eye on the stream while it runs.
- Use encoder settings suited to your output: YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for general stream settings; bitrate and keyframe choices do not determine whether the layout is 9:16.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover testing, previewing, and monitoring. For regular uploaded videos, its resolution and aspect-ratio guidance explains how the video player handles different shapes; that is separate from configuring a dual-format live stream.
