Fix most live-stream lighting problems by first moving your main light in front of you, near the webcam’s direction, and reducing bright light behind you. Then check camera exposure or anti-flicker controls if the image is still dim, shifting in brightness, or banded. You can try these changes with a lamp you already own before buying anything.
Fix dark faces and harsh shadows first
- Move your main light to the camera side. Put a desk lamp or other existing light in front of you, close to the webcam’s direction, so it illuminates your face. Logitech gives similar advice for the C922: light should come from behind the webcam, not behind the presenter. Logitech’s C922 guidance also recommends keeping backlighting minimal.
- Reduce hard shadows. If the main light creates a sharp shadow, soften or diffuse it if possible, or add a softer fill light from another direction. Logitech describes a key light plus a softer fill light for the C922; this is an option, not a requirement to buy a two-light kit.
- Check the frame again. Look at your face, background, and any bright window or lamp in the actual stream preview. Reposition the existing light or reduce the bright source’s dominance before changing camera settings.
Logitech advises that the environment lighting level for best C922 results should be above 300 lux. That is specific to its C922 guidance, not a universal minimum for webcams or live streams.
Correct a backlit or silhouetted face
A bright window or lamp behind you can cause the camera’s exposure to favor the background, leaving your face dark. Move the main light to the camera side of you, and reduce or block the backlight if practical. Make changes one at a time and check the stream preview so you can see whether the face, rather than only the background, becomes clearer.
Check exposure when the image is dim or changes brightness
If your face remains dim after adjusting light placement, open your camera’s software and look for exposure, auto-exposure, or low-light compensation controls. Menu names and available settings differ by camera model.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Automatic exposure can help when ambient light changes during a stream, such as when daylight through a window shifts. Elgato says this may suit changing light for Facecam.
- Elgato’s Facecam Camera Hub guidance suggests considering more light if ISO rises above 1000. Treat that as Facecam-specific advice, not a threshold that applies to every camera.
- If changing exposure makes the image too bright, too dark, or unstable, return to the prior setting and improve the light in the room instead.
See Elgato’s Facecam Camera Hub settings guidance for its controls.
Stop flicker, ripples, and horizontal bands
Flicker or dark rolling bands can result from artificial-light frequency interacting with the camera’s shutter or exposure timing. TP-Link describes this issue for VIGI cameras and recommends setting power-line frequency to match local supply, then adjusting exposure; anti-flicker may help if the problem remains.

- Find the camera’s power-line frequency setting. On a VIGI camera, choose 50 Hz or 60 Hz to match the local electrical supply. Do not assume the same menu or controls are available on other models.
- Adjust exposure if bands persist. Change exposure gradually and check the image after each adjustment.
- Try anti-flicker. Enable the setting if your camera software offers it. Logitech documents an Anti-flicker control in Tune for BRIO 500/501, and Elgato lists anti-flicker in Camera Hub for Facecam.
TP-Link’s VIGI instructions were last updated September 20, 2026. Controls can vary by camera model and firmware. See TP-Link’s VIGI flicker guidance, Logitech’s BRIO 500/501 settings information, and Elgato’s Facecam settings guidance.
If the picture still looks pixelated
Lighting and camera settings can contribute to a blurry or pixelated picture, but they are not the only possible causes. Streamlabs also identifies bandwidth, encoder configuration, and computer processing as factors. If correcting the light does not help, check those independently rather than continuing to adjust lamps. See Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide.

When buying a light may help
If no existing lamp can light your face adequately, a controllable LED key light is a practical category to consider. A softer fill light is a secondary option if shadows remain after improving the key light’s position. Compare brightness controls, whether the light can be softened or diffused, mounting options, and whether it can be placed near your webcam for your actual desk and framing. No individual light has been tested or compared here.
