You can usually switch 24/7 YouTube streaming services without changing your YouTube stream key. Keep the YouTube stream URL and key, enter them in the replacement service’s YouTube or custom encoder settings, then test the feed and confirm it appears in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it. Change the key only if you need to replace it—for example, if it may have been exposed.
What stays with YouTube—and what you must move
Your stream key and stream URL are part of YouTube’s ingest setup. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” A streaming provider may separately store its own credentials, playlists, and configuration; do not assume those transfer when you change providers. You need to configure the replacement service with the YouTube destination details yourself, following that service’s instructions for the correct fields. YouTube: Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Before the change, confirm that you can access the YouTube channel and the new service, and keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public document or screenshot.
Switch services while preserving the existing key
- Record the YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, note the stream URL, stream key, and stream type or protocol in use. Also record relevant stream metadata you may need to recreate in the new service. Keep the key somewhere secure. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain where to find and copy the connection details: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure the replacement service’s destination. Choose YouTube if it is offered as a destination. Otherwise, use the service’s custom encoder, server, or RTMP settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the corresponding fields. Check the new service’s documentation for field names and format; do not put the key in a field intended for a provider password or account login.
- Keep the current key if it is still valid. YouTube supports custom reusable stream keys. Its “Reuse settings” workflow can create a stream using the prior stream’s metadata, settings, and key. Reusing the key is different from copying a provider’s configuration: the destination service still needs to be set up. See Manage live stream settings.
- Use the correct protocol and URL. If the replacement requires RTMPS and supports it, copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and use that with the key. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL; do not substitute an ordinary RTMP URL. The encoder must support RTMPS. Details: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Start the new feed as a test. Check that the incoming feed appears in the Live Control Room preview, then check the channel or watch page and playback on a mobile device. Confirm that the content, audio, and stream status are as expected before depending on the new service. YouTube recommends preview and accessibility checks in its live streaming tips.
- Check upload capacity if you operate an encoder at your location. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and accounting for the bitrate of both the primary and backup encoders when both are in use. This is YouTube Help’s recommendation, not a measured guarantee. See Streaming tips.
YouTube’s event guidance recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting an encoder at least fifteen minutes before an event. Those are planning recommendations for events, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 cutover. YouTube live streaming tips.

Plan the cutover and verify recovery
If you can briefly tolerate an interruption
Configure the replacement service, start its feed, and wait for the Live Control Room preview before treating the switch as complete. Then check actual playback on the channel. Avoid resetting the key as part of the migration unless there is a reason to replace it; fewer simultaneous changes make it easier to identify a configuration problem.
If your setup uses a backup encoder
Test failover deliberately rather than assuming it works. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network and confirming playback rolls over to the backup. If you archive locally, verify that archive files are growing and intact. See YouTube live streaming tips.

If the key may have been exposed
Reset it in YouTube, copy the newly generated key, and update the replacement service before relying on its feed. A reset creates a different key; any encoder still using the old one must be changed. Coordinate the update so the service is not left sending with stale credentials. Manage live stream settings.
Troubleshoot a feed that does not appear
- No preview in Live Control Room: Recheck that the stream URL and key were copied correctly and entered in the right destination fields. If you reset the key, replace the old value in the service configuration.
- The service accepts the settings but YouTube does not connect: Check whether the service expects RTMP or RTMPS. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder supports it. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- The new feed is visible, but viewers cannot watch reliably: Check playback on the channel or watch page and on mobile. If sending from a local encoder, compare its bitrate with available upload capacity; YouTube recommends 20% headroom and asks creators to account for primary and backup bitrate. Streaming tips.
- Neither the old nor new setup can go live: Check the channel’s current live-streaming eligibility in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s general guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; account status is specific to the channel and rules may change. Frequently Asked Questions
Does switching 24/7 services automatically change my YouTube stream key?
No. A provider change does not by itself change the YouTube key. You can continue using the existing key if it remains valid and configure it in the replacement service.
Can I use the same YouTube key for a new stream?
YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys. The new service still needs the correct YouTube URL and key entered in its destination settings.
