How to Support Girls’ Access to Gymnastics and Sports in Pakistan

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Girls’ participation in gymnastics and other sports in Pakistan depends on access conditions, not motivation alone. A girl needs a venue she can reach safely, fees her family can manage, a program suited to her age and interests, qualified coaching, supportive adults and a reliable way to report harassment or abuse.

For gymnastics in particular, publicly listed facilities are only starting points: a listing does not prove that a girls’ class is running today. The practical approach is to improve the surrounding conditions and verify every local detail before a family commits time or money.

What makes participation possible

Sports access is a chain. If one link fails—transport, cost, permission, coaching, privacy or safety—an apparently available class may still be unusable. Support should therefore be planned around the whole journey from home to practice and back, rather than around equipment alone.

The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) identifies personal, social, cultural and organizational barriers that can affect girls’ activity. These include family discouragement, pressure to prioritize academics, programs that do not match girls’ interests, limited physical literacy, a lack of suitable clothing, negative body image, poor facilities and safety concerns. Its Guidelines for Gender-responsive Sports Organizations (2021) point to girl-friendly programs, safe and accessible facilities, support from families and educators, and opportunities to learn from female athlete role models.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

That framing matters in Pakistan. A girl who cannot travel safely, whose school offers no practice time, or who fears being judged for her clothing may be just as interested in sport as a girl who participates regularly. Removing those practical barriers is support, not special treatment.

What the Pakistan-specific evidence can—and cannot—tell us

A bounded study of female college students

A peer-reviewed study by Ge and colleagues, published in SAGE Open in 2022, examined constraints on sports participation among female students. The researchers selected two colleges in each of the four provincial capitals of Pakistan: 800 students were selected and 687 valid responses were analyzed. The model considered college attitudes toward physical education, facilities and equipment, religion and culture, family values, economic issues, gender, politics and mass media.

This is useful evidence about how several constraints can interact, but it is not a national estimate of all girls and women. The participants were college students in eight institutions, and the study covered sports participation broadly rather than gymnastics specifically. The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable current national participation rate for girls’ sport or a gymnastics-specific rate.

Barriers discussed in the study

  • Distance and route safety: A facility may be technically open but impractical if the journey is long, expensive or unsafe.
  • Parental permission and family values: Families may worry about travel, mixed settings, clothing, reputation or time away from study.
  • Facilities and equipment: Inadequate spaces, worn equipment or a lack of suitable practice areas can make participation irregular or unsafe.
  • Cost: Fees are only one part of the expense; transport, clothing and competition travel can also matter.
  • Coaching: The study discusses a lack of skilled physical-education teachers and recommends skilled female trainers or expert coaches.
  • Weak extracurricular provision: If schools and colleges do not offer regular activities, girls must find and finance opportunities elsewhere.

The authors’ implementation suggestions include better facilities and funding, extracurricular sports with skilled female trainers or expert coaches, and greater representation of women in sports administration. These are study-supported directions, not a guarantee that one intervention will work in every city or family.

Actions families can take

Start with the girl’s goals and constraints

Ask whether she wants recreation, physical fitness, a structured class, competition or a route into coaching and leadership. Ask which sport interests her, what days are realistic, and whether she prefers a girls-only or mixed setting. A plan that ignores her interests is less likely to last, even when the venue is good.

Build a realistic travel and time plan

Map the complete trip, including the walk from a drop-off point and the return journey after dark. Identify a consistent adult or group travel arrangement rather than relying on an occasional lift. Set practice times around schoolwork without treating academics as a reason to exclude sport; predictable scheduling helps families and coaches protect both.

Discuss clothing, privacy and comfort before enrollment

Ask the provider what clothing is accepted, whether changing space is private, and whether sessions are girls-only, mixed, or divided by age. The goal is a safe, comfortable arrangement that meets the facility’s rules and the family’s needs, not a single dress standard imposed on every participant.

Agree on safety and communication

Before the first session, a parent or guardian should know who supervises practice, where participants wait, how attendance is recorded, and whom to contact if something goes wrong. The girl should know that she can stop an activity and report uncomfortable behavior without losing access to sport.

Budget the full cost

Request a written breakdown of registration, recurring fees, transport, clothing, equipment and any competition charges. Ask whether a trial session, fee waiver, installment plan or school subsidy exists. Do not buy home apparatus as a substitute for qualified instruction and a safe practice area.

What schools and colleges can change

Make activity regular, not occasional

Schools can reserve recurring after-school or timetable slots, publish eligibility and fees, and allow beginners to join without requiring prior competition experience. A consistent weekly session is more useful than a single sports day because it lets girls build skills and families plan transport.

Use qualified, preferably female, coaching

Recruit skilled female physical-education teachers or coaches where possible, and provide access to expert coaches when specialist gymnastics instruction is needed. A school should be able to explain a coach’s qualifications, supervision arrangements and emergency procedure rather than relying on an informal volunteer with no defined responsibility.

Improve the facility around the activity

Check flooring, lighting, ventilation, toilets, changing privacy, storage and equipment maintenance. A school without a full gymnastics hall can still provide safe general conditioning or introductory movement sessions, but it should not present improvised apparatus as specialist training.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give families clear information

Publish the coach’s name, session times, location, fees, transport arrangements, clothing guidance, age range and a safeguarding contact. Invite parents and students to raise concerns through a documented process. Teachers and administrators should actively encourage girls’ participation rather than assuming that silence means disinterest.

What clubs and community organizations should provide

Design for beginners and progression

Explain what a first session involves, how ability is assessed, and how participants move from basic skills to more advanced work. Offer a low-pressure entry route for girls who have never used gymnastics equipment. If competition is available, state the expected training frequency and selection process separately from recreational enrollment.

Make safety visible

Post a code of conduct, identify the person responsible for safeguarding, and tell families how to report harassment, misconduct or abuse. Sessions should have appropriate supervision, clear boundaries for physical contact and a way to respond when a participant raises a concern. These protections reflect UNESCO’s call to protect participants from harassment, misconduct and abuse.

Include girls who need adaptations

Ask about disability access, medical or communication needs, and reasonable adaptations before enrollment. A provider that cannot offer a particular adaptation should explain the limitation honestly and help the family identify a safer alternative where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a local support network

Community groups can coordinate transport, share information about verified sessions, invite female athlete role models and negotiate affordable access with schools or public facilities. The aim is not to create a parallel system for girls, but to make ordinary sports infrastructure usable and welcoming.

Finding gymnastics opportunities in Pakistan

Use Pakistan Sports Board listings as leads, not guarantees

Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) facility pages list gymnastics among the indoor activities at Liaquat Gymnasium and show gymnastics fee entries for PSB coaching centres in Karachi and Lahore. These entries can help a family identify places to contact, but they do not verify that a girls’ class is currently operating.

The listings do not establish an instructor’s current availability, age eligibility, session timetable, gender access, privacy arrangements or safeguarding procedures. PSB says it maintains facilities at its headquarters and coaching centres in provincial capitals, extends facilities to the general public through membership, and supports or guides national sports organizations. Because sports responsibilities were devolved to provincial governments, a family may need to check both the relevant provincial sports authority and PSB.

Questions to ask a centre before traveling or paying

  1. Is gymnastics currently being taught at this location, and on which days and times?
  2. Are girls accepted in the relevant age group, and is the session girls-only, mixed or separated by age?
  3. Who is the coach, what qualifications or experience do they have, and will a qualified coach be present for every session?
  4. What is the current registration or membership process, and what do the listed fees cover?
  5. Are there trial sessions, concessions, scholarships or installment options?
  6. What equipment and flooring are available, and how are they inspected and maintained?
  7. Is there private changing space, suitable clothing guidance and a safe waiting area?
  8. How are attendance, emergencies, harassment complaints and child-safeguarding concerns handled?
  9. What transport, parking or drop-off arrangements are practical at the session time?
  10. Can beginners join, and is there a pathway to regular practice, competition or leadership?
  11. What disability accommodations can the centre provide?
  12. Who should a parent contact if the advertised class is canceled or the arrangements change?

Record the name and date of the person who answers. A current confirmation by telephone or in person is more reliable than an old listing or an announcement shared on social media.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare two programs

When several options exist, compare them using the same questions. The lowest fee is not automatically the best value if travel is unsafe, practice is irregular or coaching is unavailable.

Decision area What to verify Why it matters
Location and transport Travel time, route safety, drop-off and return arrangements A reachable program is more likely to become regular attendance.
Cost Registration, recurring fees, transport, clothing, equipment and competition charges Families can avoid unexpected costs and plan support.
Coach quality Qualifications, relevant experience and who supervises each session Specialist movement skills require competent instruction and supervision.
Age and entry level Minimum and maximum ages, beginner access and assessment rules A girl should not be turned away because she lacks prior training.
Gender and privacy Girls-only or mixed format, changing space and clothing arrangements Comfort and family confidence affect continued participation.
Safeguarding Code of conduct, reporting contact, supervision and emergency response Participants need protection from harassment, misconduct and abuse.
Disability inclusion Physical access, communication support and possible adaptations Access should include girls who need reasonable adjustments.
Practice continuity Weekly schedule, cancellation policy and facility maintenance Regular repetition is essential for skill development.
Progression Recreational levels, competitions, leadership or coaching opportunities Girls can choose whether and how to advance without leaving the program.

Making safety and inclusion part of the program

Protect the route as well as the venue

Safety does not begin at the gym door. Consider the time of day, lighting, traffic, public transport, waiting arrangements and the adult responsible for collection. If a schedule makes the return journey unsafe, ask whether the provider can offer a daytime group or coordinate with a school or community venue closer to home.

Protect dignity and bodily autonomy

Gymnastics involves demonstration, spotting and corrections. Providers should explain in advance how physical assistance is used, seek appropriate consent and offer a clear way to object to conduct that feels unsafe. A girl should never be pressured to continue a movement or interaction that causes pain or fear.

Keep academic and family relationships supportive

Teachers and parents can review workload, sleep and travel rather than framing sport as an enemy of education. Family encouragement can be as practical as arranging a ride, attending an orientation or helping a girl prepare clothing and food for practice. Support should not depend on winning medals.

Create feedback loops

Ask participants periodically whether the timetable, coaching, privacy and transport still work. Track attendance and reasons for leaving without blaming girls for dropping out. Patterns such as repeated cancellations, unaffordable travel or uncomfortable supervision indicate a program problem that administrators should address.

Understanding recent national initiatives

Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and Empower Sports Academy

On 18 December 2025, Pakistan’s Press Information Department reported that the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and Empower Sports Academy had signed a Letter of Intent for a National Women’s Sports Initiative. The announcement described a stated target of reaching 10,000 girls under 19 each year through a multi-sport talent hunt involving field camps, regional trials and school outreach, with training and facility-access support.

That figure is an annual target announced by the government, not a verified count of girls reached. The announcement does not establish current enrollment, local trial dates, the full list of sports or that gymnastics is included. Families should ask for the current application channel, location, age rules, sports offered, timetable, costs and safeguarding arrangements before treating the initiative as an available class.

Empower Sports Academy’s Founder and Executive Director, Junaid Qureshi, described the partnership in promotional terms: “This partnership marks a turning point for women’s sports in Pakistan and Together with PMYP, we will build the country’s largest talent pipeline and give young girls the opportunity, training, and platform to become champions for Pakistan.” The statement expresses the initiative’s ambition; it does not replace local enrollment information.

UN Women Pakistan and Zalmi Foundation

On 21 August 2025, UN Women Pakistan and Zalmi Foundation announced a partnership involving women’s cricket and football leagues, regional talent identification, structured tournaments, coaching camps, leadership sessions, mentorship and community outreach. Jamshed M. Kazi, Country Representative of UN Women Pakistan, said: “At UN Women, we believe that every woman and girl has the right to realize and reach her full potential — whether in classrooms, at workplaces, in communities or on sports fields.”

This is an example of institutional support for women’s sport, but the announcement does not describe gymnastics offerings or establish current local enrollment. Check the sports, city, age range, dates and registration route rather than assuming that a partnership covers every discipline.

UNICEF’s gender strategy

UNICEF Pakistan’s 2024–2027 gender strategy places gender-equality work in a socio-ecological framework that addresses structural inequalities at multiple levels. It is useful national context for coordinated action by families, schools, communities and public institutions, but it is not a gymnastics access program.

The rights principle

UNESCO’s Women and Sports materials quote the International Charter of Physical Education, Physical Activity and Sport: “equal opportunity to participate and be involved at all supervision and decision-making levels in physical education, physical activity and sport, whether for the purpose of recreation, health promotion or high performance, is the right of every girl and every woman that must be actively enforced”. In practice, enforcement means budgets, safe facilities, accountable staff and routes for girls to influence decisions—not only public statements.

A step-by-step plan for a family seeking a class

  1. Define the goal. Decide whether the priority is general activity, introductory gymnastics, regular training, competition or a future coaching role.
  2. Map realistic options. Ask the school, provincial sports department, PSB centre and reputable local clubs about nearby sessions. Keep a note of the date and person who provided each detail.
  3. Confirm the class. Verify that gymnastics is being taught now, not merely listed, and confirm the age group, gender format and timetable.
  4. Check the coach and venue. Ask about qualifications, supervision, equipment, flooring, changing privacy, disability access and emergency arrangements.
  5. Calculate the complete cost. Include transport, clothing, registration, recurring fees and possible competition expenses; ask about concessions before paying.
  6. Make a travel and safeguarding plan. Decide who accompanies or collects the girl, where she waits, and how she reports a concern or a canceled session.
  7. Use an introductory period. Observe whether the class is orderly, respectful and consistent. A trial should test the real conditions, not a specially staged demonstration.
  8. Review after several weeks. Ask the participant whether she feels safe, welcome and interested, then adjust the schedule or provider if a barrier remains.

What equipment can—and cannot—solve

Equipment is necessary for some gymnastics skills, but it does not resolve the barriers identified in Pakistan-focused evidence: distance, route safety, family permission, cost, inadequate facilities, weak extracurricular provision or a shortage of skilled coaches. Home apparatus can introduce fall and supervision risks when a trained instructor and suitable space are absent.

Prioritize a safe, coached opportunity. If a provider recommends personal items such as clothing or basic conditioning aids, treat those as secondary costs and ask whether they are genuinely required. No consumer purchase can substitute for qualified instruction, safeguarding and a dependable place to practice.

Questions to keep asking local institutions

  • Does the nearest school or college offer a regular, coached activity for girls?
  • Can the provincial sports authority identify a current facility rather than an historical listing?
  • Can PSB confirm the present gymnastics timetable, fee and eligibility at the relevant centre?
  • Is there a female coach or another qualified coach present for every session?
  • Can families see the safeguarding and complaints process before enrollment?
  • Are transport, privacy, disability access and total cost addressed in writing?
  • Is there a realistic progression from beginner participation to competition or leadership, if the girl wants it?

When those answers are clear, support becomes practical: a girl can choose an activity, reach it safely, train with competent supervision and continue because the institutions around her are doing their part.
