In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, copy the stream URL and key from Live Control Room into the encoder, start the encoder, wait for its preview, then click Go live. YouTube identifies encoders as the route for screen sharing and gameplay: YouTube’s encoder overview.
Before you set up: check live-stream eligibility
YouTube’s stated requirements are that the channel is verified, has had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the person livestreaming is at least 16 years old. Check your channel’s current eligibility and status in YouTube Studio before configuring software; YouTube’s interface and eligibility details may change. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Choose software or an encoder for your production
For a screen demonstration, lesson, or narrated documentary discussion, choose an encoder that can capture your display and route the audio you want viewers to hear. YouTube maintains a list of verified encoder options, but says these products are not made by YouTube; the listing is not a comparative ranking or endorsement. Review compatibility with your operating system and hardware, audio routing, setup complexity, stream-health visibility, production features, and total cost before choosing. YouTube’s encoder options.
- Basic screen share: Capture the display and, if needed, system or application audio.
- Narrated tutorial: A separate microphone is optional, but can make speech clearer. Test it alongside any application audio to avoid clipping or an unintelligible mix.
- Face-camera overlay or multiple inputs: Use an encoder setup that supports the webcam and other audio/video sources you need. YouTube describes external equipment and multi-camera or microphone setups for more involved productions.
- Professional event: Consider whether dedicated hardware encoding suits the event’s production workflow; YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events.
The official guidance explains encoder workflows but does not compare individual software performance or prices. There is no evidence-based universal “best” encoder for every screen stream.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- Open Live Control Room: In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or manage the stream in Live Control Room. The exact interface may change; use the labels shown in your current Studio account. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- Get the connection details: In Live Control Room, find the stream URL (sometimes shown as the server URL) and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Configure the encoder: If it offers a YouTube preset, select it. Otherwise, copy the URL into the encoder’s server or stream URL field and paste the key into its stream-key field. Do not display the key in a screen capture, recording, or broadcast.
- Set up the picture and sound: Select the display or application to capture. Choose the microphone and any system/application audio sources you intend viewers to hear. Add a webcam or other inputs only if your chosen encoder supports them and you need them.
- Start sending, but do not publish yet: Start the encoder’s outgoing stream. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and confirm that the picture and sound are correct.
- Publish and finish cleanly: Once the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room. When finished, click End Stream and stop the encoder’s outgoing stream. YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
Choose quality your upload connection can sustain
The encoder’s total stream bitrate must fit the upload bandwidth actually available to it. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, rather than using the connection’s full measured capacity. Upload speed can differ from download speed, and other people or devices using the network can reduce what is available to your stream. YouTube’s upload-bandwidth guidance.
- Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to the planned broadcast, including typical household or workplace network use.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the connection can sustain with headroom. No single bitrate is appropriate for every connection or production.
- Test with representative screen motion and audio. A mostly static slide deck and a fast-moving video can place different demands on the stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators before publishing, then watch for warnings or health messages while live. YouTube’s stream-health guidance.
Test the full screen-share workflow before the real broadcast
- Make a short private or otherwise suitable test stream using the same encoder, capture source, audio devices, and network you plan to use.
- Confirm that the intended screen or window appears and that notifications, private tabs, account details, and the stream key are not exposed.
- Listen for the microphone and application audio in the preview or test recording. Check for missing sources, echo, clipping, and an unbalanced mix.
- Verify that Live Control Room receives the encoder feed and reports no unresolved stream-health problem before clicking Go live.
- Repeat the test after changing the encoder, audio routing, capture source, quality settings, or network.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm the encoder is sending, that the stream URL and key were copied from the current stream, and that the encoder has not stopped or lost its network connection.
- YouTube does not accept the connection: Check for a mistyped or outdated URL or key. If you suspect the key was exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
- Video stutters or stream health warns of a problem: Compare the total bitrate with available upload bandwidth, restore the recommended headroom, reduce the encoder’s quality demand if necessary, and limit competing network use. Check the Live Control Room health messages.
- Viewers cannot hear the intended audio: Check the encoder’s selected microphone and system/application audio sources, their mute states, and their levels. Test the complete audio mix before going live.
- The wrong screen or sensitive information appears: Stop the broadcast if needed, select the intended display or application, close private material, and verify the preview before resuming.
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, age eligibility, and whether the channel has a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded program that should stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to running a screen encoder on your computer: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
