Shuffle your local video file list first, save it as a concat-demuxer playlist, then give that playlist to FFmpeg. Use -stream_loop -1 to repeat the same shuffled order; prepare and normalize your files carefully, configure YouTube Live with the current ingest URL and stream key, and test clip transitions before relying on the stream.
How the random order works
The concat demuxer reads playlist entries in sequence. The random order comes from how you arrange those entries before FFmpeg starts—not from a random-selection option in the demuxer. Looping that input repeats the same shuffled sequence. To get a new order on a later pass, an external process must generate a new playlist and manage the transition.
FFmpeg’s documentation covers the concat demuxer and input looping in its command-line documentation.
Check your files before making the playlist
Inspect representative clips for video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio layout, and duration. The concat demuxer is strict: files should have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in duration metadata can also cause gaps or artifacts at clip boundaries. A collection of clips from different sources or export settings may not be compatible as-is.

#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Uniform files: Try the concat demuxer with stream copy when the media streams match and the output container is suitable. This avoids decoding and re-encoding, but cannot apply filters and is not compatible with every combination of media and target.
- Mixed files: Normalize or transcode clips to a common profile, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter when re-encoding is required. This is more flexible, but takes processing resources and can affect quality. FFmpeg explains the distinction in its FAQ and command-line documentation.
Test actual transitions, not just the first clip. No sample files or command were tested for this guide, so a successful result depends on your files, FFmpeg build, and output settings.
Create a shuffled concat playlist
Make a plain-text file containing one file entry per clip, in the order you want. Absolute paths reduce ambiguity about where FFmpeg looks for media. Playlist syntax and shell commands differ by operating system; the following is a format example, not a universal shuffle command:

file '/absolute/path/video-a.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/video-c.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/video-b.mp4'
Save it as playlist.txt. The entries above are merely illustrative: put your clips in an actually shuffled order before saving. Escape quotes and unusual characters in paths according to concat-demuxer syntax, and make sure FFmpeg can read every listed file. If you use relative paths, their resolution depends on the playlist and working-directory arrangement.
The example FFmpeg command below uses -safe 0, which relaxes concat-demuxer path restrictions. Use that only when the playlist and all referenced paths are trusted; do not feed it an untrusted playlist. Check the concat-demuxer documentation for the behavior supported by your installed version.

Loop and send the playlist with FFmpeg
This is an illustrative command template, not a tested command. Replace every placeholder, verify the installed FFmpeg build and media compatibility, and confirm the RTMPS destination format supported by your build.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v <video-bitrate> -maxrate <video-bitrate>
-bufsize <buffer-size> -g <keyframe-interval-in-frames>
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YouTube RTMPS ingest URL>/<stream key>"
-stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. The -g value is a number of frames, so calculate it from the output frame rate: a two-second interval is 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Use a matching frame-rate and resolution plan for your output rather than assuming every source clip has the same settings.

For a compatible collection, you may consider stream copy (-c copy) instead of encoding. It is fast and avoids re-encoding loss, but cannot apply filters and may not work for the target container or mixed files. Encoding to a consistent profile offers more control, with a processing-load and quality trade-off. See FFmpeg’s codec and command-line documentation and protocol documentation.
One repeated shuffle or a new shuffle each time?
The command loops the same playlist, so every pass uses the same order. FFmpeg does not regenerate or reshuffle the list automatically. To change order between passes, an external script or supervisor must create a new playlist and restart or otherwise coordinate playback. The implementation depends on your operating system and whether a gap between passes is acceptable; test it rather than assuming a seamless transition.

Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and copy its server URL and stream key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Put the current ingest URL and key in FFmpeg’s output destination. Do not publish a real key in examples, screenshots, source repositories, or logs; it is a credential that can let someone else send video to your stream.
- Start FFmpeg and check the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube may require you to click Go live after the preview appears.
- Before troubleshooting the command, confirm the channel is eligible. YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, and the user must be at least 16.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), supported codecs, and settings matched to the chosen resolution and frame rate. Its SDR H.264 bitrate recommendations below are guidance, not a guarantee of quality; use the row matching your actual codec and output mode. YouTube lists separate values for AV1 and HEVC on its encoder settings page, checked for this article in 2026.
| SDR H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate | YouTube-listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
YouTube recommends maintaining 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, previewing before going live, and monitoring audio and video while streaming. Test with motion and audio similar to the planned content, and consider a private or unlisted test when appropriate. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection will remain stable; see its streaming tips and live streaming tips.
Troubleshoot playlist, boundary, and ingest problems
| Symptom | What to check and do |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits while opening the playlist | Check playlist syntax, path quoting, file permissions, and whether every listed file opens. Confirm that relative paths resolve as expected. |
| Video or audio breaks at a clip boundary | Compare stream layouts, codecs, codec parameters, time bases, and duration metadata. Normalize or transcode incompatible clips; test the transition again. |
| YouTube shows no preview | Re-copy the server URL and key from the currently selected Live Control Room stream, check channel eligibility, and inspect FFmpeg’s output for connection or encoding errors. |
| YouTube reports stream-health issues | Check that the output uses a supported codec, CBR, a suitable bitrate, and the recommended keyframe interval. Confirm available upload bandwidth and leave headroom. |
| The stream is live but unstable | Monitor the connection and audio/video continuously. Test the exact clip collection and transitions under conditions similar to the intended stream. |
| The playlist repeats without changing order | That is expected with -stream_loop -1: it repeats the same input list. Use an external playlist-generation and orchestration process to create a new shuffle. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos and playlists.
