OBS’s VLC Video Source does not document an automatic sort-by-filename button. To make videos play in filename order, arrange the playlist in the OBS source properties, turn off Shuffle Playlist, and verify the sequence before going live. Numbered filename prefixes such as 01_ and 02_ can make the intended order easier to follow, but they are a manual aid—not an OBS auto-sort feature.
Set the playback order in OBS
- Check VLC is installed. The VLC Video Source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- Open the source’s properties. In OBS, select the VLC Video Source in the Sources list and open its Properties. Inspect the configured media-file list.
- Arrange the files in the intended order. Add or reorder items until the displayed list matches the sequence you want. OBS documents playback in file-list order when shuffle is off, rather than an automatic filename-sorting control. The OBS source implementation also shows a separate shuffle branch.
- Turn off Shuffle Playlist. The setting defaults to Off. Leave it off for predictable list-order playback; when enabled, the source randomizes the media files.
- Preview the sequence. Start playback in OBS and check the opening files and transitions before starting the YouTube Live stream. This catches a misplaced item or unintended shuffle before viewers see it.
Use filename prefixes as an ordering aid
If selecting a batch of files produces an uncertain order, rename them with prefixes such as 01_, 02_, and 03_. Then inspect and arrange the list in OBS to match those names. Prefixes make the intended sequence legible, but the documented control remains the order of the configured OBS playlist; they do not add automatic sorting.
Why sorting in VLC may not change OBS
VLC has playlist sorting functions, including sorting by name and other criteria. Those controls apply to VLC’s playlist. OBS’s VLC Video Source has its own configured file list, and the cited documentation does not establish that sorting VLC’s desktop-player queue updates the OBS list. For a deterministic result, set and verify the order in OBS itself.
Also, an OBS VLC Video Source playlist is not the same thing as an HTTP Live Streaming playlist. HLS is a streaming format with a playlist derived from M3U, as described in RFC 8216; that protocol distinction does not change how you order files in this OBS source.

Alternative: consider a playlist plugin
The OBS forum lists Media Playlist Source, a third-party plugin described as allowing playlist edits and reordering without restarting video. Its listing identifies a minimum OBS version of 30.0.0 and Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Check the listing for current availability and compatibility with your OBS version before relying on it; it is not the built-in VLC Video Source control.
Keep the YouTube Live checks separate
The steps above address local playlist order. OBS and VLC documentation cited here do not establish YouTube’s current copyright rules, reused-content policy, or encoder requirements. Check YouTube’s current official guidance for those matters rather than assuming that a correctly ordered playlist makes its contents or stream compliant.

Troubleshoot the wrong playback order
- Files play randomly: Open the VLC Video Source properties and confirm Shuffle Playlist is off.
- Files play in a consistent but unexpected order: Inspect the list shown in OBS and manually arrange it. Do not assume that filename order or VLC desktop-player sorting changed the OBS list.
- The VLC Video Source is unavailable: Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- You changed filenames but the sequence did not change: Reopen the OBS properties and check the configured list. Filename prefixes are a guide for arranging that list, not a documented live sort function.
- You need to edit a playlist without restarting playback: Assess the third-party Media Playlist Source plugin, checking current compatibility and availability first.
