How to Stream Vertical Video to YouTube with Astra Streaming Studio

Astra Streaming Studio can send video to YouTube over RTMP, but its documented features do not confirm portrait output. Here’s how to connect it and verify a vertical presentation.

You can send video from Astra Streaming Studio to YouTube over RTMP, but the available documentation does not confirm that Astra can create a portrait 9:16 feed or a YouTube Shorts-feed live. Set up the YouTube connection in Astra, then check YouTube Studio’s incoming preview; for a confirmed vertical presentation, use YouTube’s documented vertical or dual-format workflow and verify the vertical preview before going live.

Before you start

  • Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s live-stream guidance requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. The minimum age for live streaming is 16. See YouTube’s live-stream help for current requirements.
  • Install Astra Streaming Studio. Its Google Play listing describes an Android app with H.264/AAC encoding, RTMP and RTMPS streaming, and live camera and screen capture. The listing reports an update date of 31 October 2023; it does not document a portrait canvas or YouTube vertical-stream controls. View Astra Streaming Studio on Google Play.
  • Have a stable connection and keep your stream key private. Use the server address and key shown in your own YouTube Studio session, not values copied from someone else’s setup.

Connect Astra Streaming Studio to YouTube

The app-specific steps below are an RTMP workflow outline corroborated by an independent Android setup walkthrough published 4 August 2026. Astra’s available documentation does not establish every current label or screen in the app, so follow the options shown in your installed version.

  1. In a browser, open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one.
  2. In the stream’s settings, copy the current YouTube server or ingest address and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or send it to anyone who does not need it.
  3. Open Astra Streaming Studio on your Android device. Configure a stream destination, choose RTMP (or RTMPS if that is the option supported by your YouTube setup and shown in Astra), and enter the server address and key from YouTube Studio.
  4. Select the configured stream in Astra and start transmitting. The independent walkthrough describes selecting the configured RTMP stream and starting it from the app; exact controls may vary by app version. See the Android-to-YouTube setup walkthrough.
  5. Return to YouTube Studio and wait for the incoming feed. Check the preview, stream status, framing, sound, and orientation before making the broadcast public or sharing it.

How to get a vertical YouTube live

Sending a feed to YouTube over RTMP is not, by itself, proof that the result is a 9:16 vertical live. The Astra Google Play listing confirms RTMP/RTMPS and capture capabilities, but does not say that the app offers a portrait canvas, a dedicated vertical stream key, or compatibility with YouTube’s encoder-based dual-stream path. Do not assume Astra alone will place a broadcast in the Shorts feed.

Option 1: Use YouTube Live Control Room’s vertical layout

YouTube documents a dual-format Live Control Room workflow that can provide horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 presentations. The vertical version defaults to a center crop; YouTube also documents fit-to-phone-width and stacked layouts. Layouts can be edited before going live and adjusted during a stream when the broadcast was initially created through YouTube’s editing canvas. Check the current vertical preview and choose a layout that keeps faces, important action, and any on-screen text in frame.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Option 2: Send separate horizontal and vertical feeds from an encoder

YouTube’s encoder workflow uses RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical feed. Set up both feeds before starting, and send the matching format to each key. YouTube says a vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started. The available Astra documentation does not establish that Astra supports this second-key arrangement, so confirm the capability in the current app before relying on it.

Choose based on the source and audience

  • Portrait-first source: A native vertical composition can keep a subject large on a phone screen. Confirm that the encoder and YouTube workflow accept that portrait feed; do not assume a setting exists in Astra.
  • One landscape source, both audiences: YouTube’s vertical canvas may crop or rearrange the horizontal presentation. Preview the result carefully, especially when the subject moves near the edges or text sits in the margins.
  • Desktop and TV viewers matter: Dual-format output can serve horizontal viewers as well as viewers in the Shorts feed, but it involves layout choices or a second encoder feed and key. Decide which presentation is primary before configuring the stream.

What viewers and channel owners should expect

According to YouTube’s current live-stream help, viewers using the Shorts feed on mobile see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal version in a dual-format stream. Both formats use the same live URL and chat. Vertical lives can be discovered in Shorts and support memberships, but YouTube lists limits: no clickable links in chat or the channel description, no pre-roll or mid-roll live ads, and no 4K bitrate streaming on the YouTube app. Live Control Room provides combined metrics; vertical-only metrics become available after 24 hours. These details can change, so consult YouTube’s current guidance when planning a broadcast.

Troubleshooting

YouTube does not receive a signal

  • Check that Astra is set to RTMP or RTMPS as appropriate, and that the server address and key match the current YouTube Studio stream.
  • Make sure the stream has been started in Astra and that the selected destination is the one you configured.
  • If you regenerated or changed the key in YouTube, update Astra with the new value. Never post the key publicly while troubleshooting.

YouTube receives video, but it is not vertical

  • Confirm the vertical presentation in YouTube Studio’s preview rather than inferring it from the phone’s orientation.
  • Use YouTube’s documented vertical canvas or dual-stream encoder setup if available to your workflow. Astra’s listing alone does not establish portrait output or dual-stream support.
  • For dual-stream encoding, confirm that the vertical feed was configured before going live and is being sent in the format expected by its key.

The vertical crop cuts off the subject or text

Review the selected canvas layout in YouTube Studio. Try center crop, fit-to-phone-width, or stacked where available, and adjust the source composition so essential content remains within the vertical frame. Preview again before relying on the broadcast.

Audio or picture is missing or inconsistent

Check Astra’s selected camera or screen source, microphone and audio input, and the preview in YouTube Studio. Confirm the app has the Android permissions required for the sources you intend to capture. The available app listing describes capture and encoding capabilities but does not provide a full troubleshooting manual.
