Use YouTube’s recommended encoder bitrate for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec as a starting point, then test that the connection available to your streaming device can sustain it. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 12 Mbps for 1080p60; those are encoder bitrates, not guaranteed internet-plan minimums. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and stream health.
First, which Astra Streaming do you mean?
“Astra Streaming” can refer to different products. Google Play describes Astra Streaming Studio as an Android live-video app with RTMP and RTMPS support, but its listing does not specify a bitrate table or a 24/7 YouTube upload-speed requirement. See the Astra Streaming Studio listing.
DataStax Astra Streaming is a distinct managed Apache Pulsar-compatible data-streaming platform. Its documentation concerns data streaming, not the upload requirements for a YouTube video broadcast. See DataStax Astra Streaming documentation. Neither source establishes a specific upload speed for a 24/7 YouTube video stream. The figures below are YouTube’s encoder guidance, not Astra requirements.
Use YouTube’s bitrate for your video format
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. They describe the bitrate to configure for the incoming encoder stream; they do not mean an internet connection advertised at the same speed is guaranteed to carry that stream reliably.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
| Incoming format | Recommended H.264 encoder bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s H.264 recommended targets; the page also gives separate recommendations and limits for AV1 and H.265. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for your chosen codec rather than applying the H.264 figures to another format.
Bitrate is not the same as internet upload speed
The encoder bitrate is the data rate of the video stream being sent. Your connection’s upload capacity is what the streaming device can actually send to YouTube. A matching advertised plan speed does not establish that the connection will sustain the encoder bitrate continuously: available capacity can vary, and other traffic may use the same connection. YouTube advises users to run a speed test and test the stream before going live; it does not publish a universal extra-headroom multiplier for this scenario.

- Choose the intended output. Set the resolution, frame rate and codec you plan to use, then look up the corresponding recommendation in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Measure the connection the stream will use. Run a speed test on the same connection and, where practical, the same device and network setup that will send the broadcast. Treat a speed-test result as a snapshot, not proof of uninterrupted performance.
- Test with representative content. Before relying on a long-running stream, send a test with the kind of audio and motion in the actual video. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages.
- Adjust based on observed health. If the stream reports low bitrate or another health problem, check the encoder output and the connection available to it. If necessary, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and retest.
For a continuous broadcast, the practical question is whether upload capacity remains adequate over time, not merely whether a brief test once reached the target. That is a planning inference from YouTube’s testing and monitoring guidance, not a published numerical 24/7 threshold.
Encoder settings that affect a stable stream
YouTube’s live-encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1. Its recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Follow the current YouTube guidance for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate rather than mixing settings from different formats. Review the encoder settings on YouTube Help.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
YouTube’s Live Streaming API health diagnostics identify low bitrate and an excessively long keyframe interval as issues to address. These are useful monitoring cues, but neither defines a separate upload-speed requirement for a 24/7 stream. See YouTube’s stream-health guidance.

Common problems and what to check
- The encoder bitrate is below the target: check the configured output bitrate against YouTube’s recommendation for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate.
- Upload tests look adequate, but stream health is poor: a speed test is only a snapshot. Test the real stream under representative conditions, monitor YouTube’s health messages, and reassess the capacity available to the streaming device.
- YouTube flags keyframes: check that the encoder is using the recommended two-second interval and does not exceed four seconds between keyframes.
- The stream uses AV1 or H.265: do not use the H.264 table as its bitrate target; consult YouTube’s current codec-specific guidance.
- You mean a different Astra product: verify the exact app or service. The Astra Streaming Studio listing and DataStax Astra Streaming documentation do not establish a YouTube 24/7 upload-speed requirement.
Copyright and long-running broadcasts
Before leaving a prerecorded stream running, make sure you have the rights to the video, music and other material in it. A technically healthy stream does not establish that its content complies with YouTube’s rules. Review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright requirements for your channel and content before broadcasting.
