Yes, a Raspberry Pi can encode and send a continuous Tamil film-song broadcast to YouTube, but the Pi is only one part of the job. You need permission for every song and visual, a board and encoding setup suited to your target resolution, a stable internet connection, and a plan to restart playback or encoding after failures. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, so a license may not be enough unless the rights owner also allowlists your channel in Content ID.
Before you start: clear the music rights
Do not assume that owning a song file, finding it online, or having permission to play it privately gives you the right to rebroadcast it as a YouTube livestream. Confirm that your permission covers the intended songs, territories, duration, live use, and any saved replay or video-on-demand version. Clear the images or other visuals shown with the music as well.
YouTube Help says that “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match may lead to a warning, placeholder image, temporary interruption, or termination. If you have a license for third-party music, the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming. - Get permission for each track and confirm it covers live transmission on YouTube and the territories you intend to reach.
- Ask the rights owner whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID, and obtain confirmation before you go live.
- Clarify whether permission covers YouTube’s saved replay as well as the live broadcast.
- Keep written records of permissions and any channel or territory restrictions.
Choose the Raspberry Pi and encoding approach
Board generation matters because H.264 encoding does not work the same way on every Raspberry Pi. Raspberry Pi Ltd’s H.264 encoding performance note compares a Pi 4 hardware-encoding path using h264_v4l2m2m with Pi 5 software encoding using libx264. Do not assume a Pi 5 has a hardware H.264 encoder, or treat an encoding comparison as proof that a particular board will run your workload continuously.

For a first build, choose a resolution and frame rate the board can encode steadily, then test with the same playlist and visual treatment you plan to use live. If a higher resolution makes encoding unstable or leaves little processing headroom, reduce the output target rather than relying on a short successful test.
Prepare the songs, visuals, and playlist
YouTube receives a video stream even when the programme is audio-focused, so pair the songs with a permitted image or visual layer. Prepare the media before opening the live broadcast: check that files play, order the tracks, and decide what should happen when the playlist reaches its end. A static image is one possible visual treatment, provided you have the right to use it.

- Place only rights-cleared audio and visuals in the broadcast playlist.
- Test every file in sequence, including the transition from the last track back to the first if you intend to loop the programme.
- Check the levels and listen for silence, clipping, or gaps between tracks throughout a representative section.
- Keep a copy of the playlist and source files on storage available to the Pi during streaming; do not rely on a removable drive remaining connected unless you have tested that setup.
Create the YouTube broadcast and configure the encoder
YouTube treats the broadcast and the incoming encoder feed as related but distinct objects: its Live API documentation describes a liveBroadcast resource and a liveStream feed. In practical terms, create or select the broadcast in YouTube’s live controls, then connect the encoder using that broadcast’s stream settings. The API model does not promise that the Pi, your network, or the broadcast will stay uninterrupted. See Google’s guide to broadcasts and streams.
- In YouTube’s live controls, create or select the broadcast for this programme and obtain its encoder connection details.
- Configure your encoder to send to YouTube over RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure extension of RTMP. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it, share it in screenshots, or place it in a public script.
- Set the video encoder to H.264 for the targets below. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists H.265 and AV1 video options, but use a format your Pi’s selected encoding path can actually produce.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Choose one supported H.264 target and set the bitrate accordingly. YouTube recommends 4 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not minimums that guarantee reliable performance on your connection.
- Use an encoder implementation appropriate to your board: the Pi 4 hardware path cited above or, on Pi 5, a software path such as
libx264. Select a configuration the board can sustain during a full test; the available evidence does not establish a single best command or setting for every operating system and encoder build. - Start with a private or otherwise limited test where appropriate, verify that YouTube receives both video and audio, and check stream health before making the broadcast public.
For current format and bitrate guidance, check YouTube’s encoder settings guide. Leave upload capacity beyond the selected video bitrate for network variation and other household traffic, then test at the actual location and time you expect to stream.

Make the Pi recoverable, not just playable
A playlist reaching its end, an encoder process stopping, a power interruption, a network outage, or storage becoming unavailable can all stop a broadcast. Treat playback, encoding, and the connection to YouTube as separate failure points. A successful test only shows that the setup worked during that test; it does not establish 24/7 uptime.
- Playback: Test the loop behavior, track transitions, and what happens if a media file is missing or cannot be read.
- Encoder: Arrange for the encoder process to restart after an unexpected exit, and verify that restart behavior rather than assuming it works.
- Network: Check the real upload connection under normal household use. If the connection drops, the Pi cannot deliver a continuous feed until connectivity returns.
- Power and cooling: Use compatible power and cooling components and run a long test under the intended workload. A Pi and accessories do not eliminate outages or heat-related problems.
- Storage: Confirm the playlist files remain accessible and that the storage does not disconnect during operation.
- Monitoring: Check the YouTube live status and the Pi’s playback and encoder state. Decide how you will notice a stopped feed and intervene if automatic restart does not restore it.
