You also need a compatible encoder, a protected YouTube stream key, a host and network connection that stay available, and a tested recovery plan. The configuration details depend on your installed Liquidsoap version; the example below is a workflow, not a production-validated script.
Before you start: confirm rights and prepare your recordings
Put the audio files you are authorized to broadcast in a playlist or directory that Liquidsoap can read. A recording being Sikh kirtan, devotional, traditional, or religious does not by itself make it free to rebroadcast. Confirm permission for the recording, performance, arrangement, and any third-party material in it.
YouTube’s livestream terms require creators to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party matches. A rights owner may require the channel to be allowlisted; detected material can lead to interruption or termination of the stream. Review the YouTube livestream terms and applicable rights arrangements before going live.
Keep the playlist files on storage the Liquidsoap process can access. A playlist supplies program material; it does not keep the host powered, restore a failed network connection, establish music rights, or guarantee successful YouTube ingestion.

Choose the program structure: playlist only or live input with fallback
Playlist-only stream
For uninterrupted recorded programming, use a playlist as the default Liquidsoap source. Liquidsoap treats playlists as sources and can hand off between tracks. This is the simpler arrangement when no presenter or live contribution needs to interrupt the recordings.
Live input with playlist fallback
If a presenter or live audio source should take priority, Liquidsoap’s fallback composition can select a live Harbor input while it is available and return to the playlist when it is not. Plan how source changes should sound and test transitions; the exact Harbor and fallback configuration depends on the Liquidsoap version and the live source you operate.

The current Liquidsoap Harbor and source-composition documentation describes these source patterns in the 2.5.x development documentation. The YouTube RTMP output reference available for this workflow is version 2.4.5, so verify syntax and encoder support against the release actually installed rather than pasting an unverified configuration into production.
Configure Liquidsoap to send the source to YouTube Live
- Install and verify Liquidsoap. Record the installed version and check that its build includes the input and encoder components your configuration needs. Consult documentation for that version; development documentation and older versioned output references may not match your package.
- Create the source. Point a Liquidsoap playlist source at your authorized audio files. Confirm the process user can read the playlist and every file, and that the source advances through tracks as expected.
- Set up the YouTube output. Liquidsoap’s version 2.4.5 reference documents
output.youtube.live.rtmp, taking an encoder, source, secret stream key, and RTMP URL parameter. Its documented default URL isrtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2. For your broadcast, use the current ingest URL and stream key displayed in YouTube Live Control Room; do not assume a default remains appropriate for your channel or session. - Choose a compatible encoder. YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Configure an encoder supported by both your installed Liquidsoap build and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. The correct Liquidsoap encoder expression is version- and build-dependent.
- Use secure ingest where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit. Check that your Liquidsoap output and chosen encoder support the current RTMPS ingest address shown by YouTube before selecting it.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or shared configuration. Restrict access to the account or service that needs it, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed.
This is an implementation outline, not a complete tested Liquidsoap script. The source and output references establish the available patterns, but a working encoder expression and audio-to-YouTube setup must be checked against your installed release and channel’s ingest requirements.

Set audio and stream parameters
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends the following audio settings for stereo. These are platform-published recommendations, not measured results or guarantees of stream quality.

YouTube’s guidance lists video codecs and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, so an audio playlist may need to be paired with an appropriate video-capable output for the specific YouTube ingest setup. The reviewed Liquidsoap references do not validate a complete audio-only setup or a particular static-image implementation. Verify the visual track, encoder expression, and ingest requirements for your installed release rather than assuming a still image will work.

Test privately, then monitor the live stream
- Set up a test broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, using private or unlisted visibility as appropriate for your channel and test.
- Start Liquidsoap and confirm the source is advancing and the encoder is producing output.
- Preview the stream in Live Control Room. Check that audio is audible, stable, and free of unexpected gaps or clipping, and that any required video is present.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator before and during the broadcast. YouTube advises testing, previewing, and monitoring rather than assuming a successful connection from the encoder alone.
- Once the test is satisfactory, start or schedule the intended broadcast and continue checking the host, process, network, and YouTube health status.
Plan for continuity and YouTube archives
A continuous Liquidsoap program still depends on the machine running Liquidsoap, readable source files, available credentials, a working network connection, and successful YouTube ingest. Arrange appropriate process supervision and recovery for your own host, and decide who will respond if the process or connection fails. Liquidsoap playlist looping does not guarantee that the broadcast itself stays online.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends keeping a local recording as backup, and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving every broadcast matters, do not rely on a single very long YouTube stream as your only recording. Consider scheduling or restarting shorter segments and maintaining a local recording workflow. Storage capacity depends on the recording format and how long you retain recordings; an external drive is one optional local-storage choice, not a requirement.

Troubleshooting common failures
