To reduce buffering, first find out whether the problem is in the outgoing stream or in viewers’ playback. If you stream to YouTube, measure upload speed during the hours you broadcast, keep the total stream bitrate within that capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and use a stable wired connection where practical. If only some viewers have trouble, investigate their device, app, and network before changing the stream settings. Other platforms may use different labels and offer different settings.
First identify who is buffering
The title alone cannot identify a cause. Buffering may begin before the stream reaches YouTube, or happen later as an individual viewer’s connection or device plays it back. The distinction determines what to change.
- Note the approximate time buffering starts and whether it happens repeatedly at particular times.
- Ask a few viewers whether they are affected. Have them note their device, YouTube app or browser, Wi-Fi or mobile data, and the approximate time.
- Compare reports from viewers on different networks. One viewer’s report is not enough to establish an ISP-wide or India-wide problem.
- Check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room at the same time. If the outgoing stream or encoder status is unhealthy, start with the broadcaster’s setup. If the stream looks healthy and only some viewers report trouble, investigate playback at their end.
Check upload capacity and bitrate
Download speed is not the figure that determines whether your encoder can send a live stream reliably. Measure upload speed on the connection actually used for the broadcast, preferably during representative busy hours. YouTube recommends that total stream bitrate stay within available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom; other devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming; YouTube Help: encoder settings and bandwidth guidance).
Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain rather than selecting the highest quality by default. For H.264, YouTube’s guidance lists these examples for 30 fps:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection can sustain the bitrate or that every viewer will receive that quality. YouTube’s guidance varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec; check its current live encoder settings for your configuration. If your upload path is unstable or shared, reduce resolution or bitrate until it remains reliable with headroom. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and networks.
Stabilize the encoder connection and settings
Use wired Ethernet when practical
For a computer-based encoder, connect the computer to the router using Ethernet if possible. YouTube recommends Ethernet for computer live streaming (YouTube Help). A Cat6 Ethernet cable is one option if the computer and network equipment have usable Ethernet ports and the cable is the right length. A cable cannot cure ISP congestion or an unstable service line.

Use YouTube’s recommended encoder settings
- Set rate control to constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together, using YouTube’s settings for the codec and output rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
Before relying on a continuous broadcast, run an unlisted rehearsal. Check audio, picture, motion, and stream health in the encoder and Live Control Room. This can reveal local encoding problems that a speed test alone will not catch.
Choose latency for a devotional stream
A 24/7 bhajan stream without real-time conversation usually does not need ultra-low delay. Normal latency is a sensible starting point: lower latency reduces the time available for playback to read ahead. YouTube Help states, “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering” (YouTube Help on live latency). Choose lower latency only when the shorter delay matters enough to accept less buffering tolerance.

Check whether viewers’ playback is the issue
If the encoder output looks healthy and reports come from only some viewers, ask them to test another connection and device rather than lowering the stream quality immediately.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see whether the problem follows one network.
- Try the YouTube app or a supported browser on another device.
- Clear the YouTube app cache if playback remains troublesome on that device.
- On YouTube TV, check playback settings: YouTube describes default broadcast delay as best for minimizing interruptions (YouTube Help).

Plan checks for a 24/7 broadcast
A continuous stream needs routine oversight as well as a workable initial setup. Schedule checks of encoder status and the viewer-facing stream, and rehearse what you will do if the encoder or connection fails. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance recommends preparing in advance, previewing and testing, checking failover, verifying mobile access, and monitoring audio and video; those precautions are not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime (YouTube Help).

Do not switch to HLS simply as a buffering fix. YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments (YouTube HLS ingestion).
