To stream a recorded sermon as a YouTube Live broadcast from Ubuntu Server 24.04, prepare the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, use FFmpeg on the server to play the file at normal speed, and send the output to YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion address with that broadcast’s stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264 with constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval for a typical setup. Check your local file and FFmpeg build first: exact codecs and available encoders vary, so no single command is guaranteed to work unchanged on every Ubuntu 24.04 server.

What you need before streaming

  • A YouTube channel and a broadcast prepared in Live Control Room. Live availability and channel settings can vary; confirm your channel can create the broadcast before planning the event.
  • The sermon recording stored on the server, readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
  • FFmpeg with an output configuration that supports your chosen codecs and RTMPS. Verify the installed build rather than assuming all Ubuntu package sources provide identical capabilities.
  • A sustained internet upload connection that can carry the selected video and audio bitrates, with headroom for network variation.

YouTube separates the incoming stream from the viewer-facing broadcast: the stream receives the encoder’s media, while the broadcast is what viewers watch. Select the correct broadcast and its associated stream settings before starting the encoder. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference for the distinction and stream configuration concepts.

Prepare the YouTube Live broadcast and get its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the scheduled broadcast you intend to show.
  2. Open that broadcast’s stream settings and copy the ingestion address and stream key YouTube provides. Use the exact endpoint and path shown there; do not substitute an address copied from an unrelated example.
  3. Keep the stream key private. It acts as a credential for sending video to the channel. Do not place it in a public script, share it, or include it in logs that other users can read.
  4. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s secure extension to RTMP. Its ingestion guidance specifies the secure endpoint details, including port 443; follow the address and path provided for the selected stream. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Inspect the sermon file and Ubuntu encoder

Before building the outgoing stream, establish what the recording actually contains and what the server can encode. A file extension alone does not identify its codecs, frame rate, dimensions, or audio layout.

Check the media streams

Use a media-inspection tool available on the server to read the file’s video and audio stream details. Confirm the file path and permissions for the account that will run the encoder. If the file has no audio or video, or has an unsupported or inconvenient codec, decide whether to transcode before going live. Do not convert a file merely because it is MKV or MP4: the input container is distinct from the outgoing stream packaging.

Check FFmpeg capabilities

Check the installed FFmpeg version and the encoders and protocols it reports. Verify that it can produce your intended video and audio codecs and send to RTMPS. The Ubuntu 24.04 package version and build capabilities have not been established here, so verify them on the target host; if an encoder or protocol is unavailable, install a suitable build from a source you trust or choose a compatible output configuration.

Choose stream settings

YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s published minimum and recommended video bitrates; they are platform guidance, not a guarantee of picture quality or proof that a particular connection can sustain them.

H.264 output Published minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These values are from YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance. A separate practical 1080p30 H.264 configuration cited in that guide’s guidance is 10 Mbps video with a 5 Mbps listed minimum; consult the current table and select settings appropriate to the target codec and output rather than treating one number as universal.

Set codec, bitrate, keyframes, and audio deliberately

  • Video codec: YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video options. Confirm your FFmpeg build supports the codec you select.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended by YouTube, and set the bitrate to suit the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, and stable upload capacity.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Match the source where practical; avoid increasing a low-frame-rate sermon just to select a larger number.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio options. For the practical 1080p30 H.264 example, use AAC stereo at the recommended 128 Kbps, provided the source and FFmpeg build support it.
  • Streams: Send one video stream and one audio stream. Check the output mapping so that unintended extra tracks are not included.

A sermon with a static lectern shot may need less bandwidth in practice than material with frequent movement, but the output still needs to satisfy YouTube’s supported settings and remain stable. Test using audio and movement similar to the actual recording.

Run FFmpeg from Ubuntu Server 24.04

Because the file, FFmpeg build, and YouTube endpoint are host-specific, verify the final command against those values instead of copying an untested command with assumed paths, codecs, or an ingestion URL. The command’s job is to read the local sermon at normal speed, produce exactly one audio and one video stream in the selected configuration, and send it to the RTMPS endpoint using the key for the chosen broadcast.

  1. Choose the input file’s full path and confirm the service account can read it.
  2. Select whether to stream-copy compatible source streams or transcode. Copying avoids an encode workload but is appropriate only when the source codecs and stream properties are accepted by YouTube and the desired output; transcoding gives control over resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, and keyframes but requires adequate server resources.
  3. Set the intended output resolution and frame rate, a supported video codec and audio codec, CBR, the selected bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. Ensure the output contains one audio and one video stream.
  4. Use the exact RTMPS ingestion address and path from Live Control Room, plus the matching stream key. Treat the key as a secret, including when storing a reusable command or service configuration.
  5. Start the encoder while watching Live Control Room. Confirm YouTube detects the incoming stream, review stream health and messages, and only then start or manage the viewer-facing broadcast according to the event schedule.

For exact FFmpeg syntax, consult the documentation for the installed build and verify options locally. The platform sources establish YouTube’s ingestion and encoder requirements, but do not establish a tested command or the capabilities of every Ubuntu 24.04 FFmpeg package.

Test and monitor before the sermon

YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Run a complete preflight with a representative section of the recording, including comparable speech level and movement. Check that sound is audible and synchronized, the picture is correct, the connection remains stable, and Live Control Room reports a healthy incoming stream. Keep Live Control Room open during the event so the operator can see warnings and decide whether to start or end the broadcast.

YouTube’s API health diagnostics can identify configuration and delivery issues such as unsupported codecs, long keyframe intervals, high or low bitrate, missing audio or video, multiple streams, unsupported resolution, and starved video. The available health information is described in the LiveStreams API reference; use the actual warnings to guide troubleshooting rather than guessing from the local encoder output.

Run unattended and protect the stream key

For a server that must continue without an operator watching the terminal, run the encoder under an appropriate process supervisor or scheduler, retain logs with access controls, and decide how alerts and restarts should work. These are deployment choices, not a YouTube-prescribed systemd setup or a guaranteed recovery policy. Test the chosen restart behavior before relying on it for a service.

Restrict access to any script or service configuration containing the stream key. Avoid printing the key in routine logs or exposing it through shared process listings. If the key is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the server configuration before the next broadcast.

File formats: what matters and what does not

The sermon recording’s container is not the same thing as the outgoing YouTube protocol. OBS’s format guide notes that MKV is its default and resilient for local recording, MP4 is broadly compatible but requires finalization, and FLV is used in RTMP contexts with limited H.264/AAC codec support. These notes concern OBS recording formats; they do not mean a source sermon must be FLV. Check the actual file’s streams and let the server encoder package the outgoing media for the selected protocol. See the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • YouTube receives no stream: Confirm the encoder is running, the selected broadcast’s stream key matches, and the exact RTMPS host, path, and port from Live Control Room are used. Check outbound network access to the secure endpoint.
  • YouTube reports an unsupported codec or resolution: Inspect the file and actual output streams, then choose a codec and resolution in YouTube’s supported guidance. Confirm the local FFmpeg build can encode the chosen codec.
  • Keyframe or GOP warning: Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and ensure it does not exceed four seconds.
  • Bitrate warning or starved video: Compare the configured output against the selected resolution and frame rate, then assess whether the server’s sustained upload capacity can carry it. Lower the output resolution or bitrate if needed while remaining within supported settings.
  • No sound: Check that the input contains an audio stream, that the encoder maps it to output, and that the selected audio codec is supported. Listen during the preflight rather than relying only on a reported stream.
  • No picture or multiple-stream warning: Check the input and output stream mapping. Configure exactly one video stream and one audio stream.
  • Encoder stops unexpectedly: Review local logs, file readability, server resource limits, and network interruptions. A supervisor may restart a process, but configure and test alerting and restart behavior; do not assume YouTube will restart a stopped encoder.
  • Wrong recording or broadcast: Confirm both the local file path and the selected YouTube broadcast before starting. The incoming stream and the viewer-facing broadcast are related but distinct objects.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want to maintain an Ubuntu server and encoder process, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video rather than going live from a camera. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
