To stream radio audio to YouTube Live with a visualizer, use OBS Studio to capture the radio program, add an audio-reactive visualizer that listens to the same OBS audio source, and send the scene to YouTube using its stream URL and stream key. First, confirm that you have permission to retransmit the station’s audio on YouTube; a publicly playable radio feed is not permission to rebroadcast it.
Before you set up OBS: confirm rights and channel access
Get written confirmation from the station and relevant music rightsholders that your permission covers a YouTube live simulcast, the territories where viewers may watch, and any recording or archive you plan to keep. If the stream will be monetized, confirm that use as well.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match may cause YouTube to replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material; if it continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party content, YouTube advises asking the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license by itself may not prevent an interruption if your channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and its guidance on allowlisting channels.
If you archive the broadcast, treat that as a separate rights question: YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream is complete. Confirm that your permission covers the saved recording and its playback, not just the live transmission. The applicable license depends on the station, rightsholders, territories, and intended use; there is no single permission requirement established for every radio stream.

Choose how the radio audio will reach OBS
There is no universal audio-routing method because the source could be a computer application, a device’s audio output, an analog receiver, or another signal path. Identify what is actually playing the station, then select the corresponding audio source or device in OBS. If the signal comes from analog equipment, an audio interface may be needed to bring it into the computer; it is not required for every setup.
- In OBS, add or select an audio input or capture source that receives the radio program. The exact source type and device name depend on your operating system and signal path.
- Play the station and watch the OBS Audio Mixer. The meter for the selected source should move in time with the program.
- If the meter stays still, check that the intended device is selected, that the player or hardware is producing audio, and that your operating system allows OBS to access that input.
- Listen to the OBS output or a test recording to check the mix. Make sure the audio is neither missing nor being captured twice through overlapping sources.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains adding and checking sources and recommends a short test before a first broadcast. The right routing details depend on your specific source and computer; do not assume that a browser capture, system-audio capture, or physical input works the same way on every setup.
Build a scene with an audio-reactive visualizer
The visualizer is a source in your OBS scene. It does not encode or transmit the broadcast on its own: OBS sends the scene’s video and audio to YouTube.

- Create or select a scene in OBS.
- Add a visual base, such as a station image or other visual you have permission to use.
- Add a visualizer source or compatible plugin, then choose the OBS audio source that carries the radio program.
- Play the program and confirm that the visual responds. If the audio meter moves but the visualization does not, check the audio source selected in the visualizer’s settings.
- Check the scene at the intended output size. Keep important text and visual details inside the visible frame, and confirm that the visual is appropriate for the full length of the broadcast.
Two documented plugin options have different version requirements. The OBS Project Forums resource page lists Waveform, version 1.9.1, last updated July 14, 2026. It lists spectrum curves, bars, stepped bars, circular variants, peak and RMS meters, and waveform displays; its stated minimum is OBS Studio 27.0.0, with Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Check the resource page against your installed OBS version before installing. The Live Audio Visualizer repository documents normal, mirrored, and radial bars and requires OBS Studio 31.1.1 or later.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
YouTube supports software encoders, including OBS, as well as standalone hardware encoders. For the software workflow, YouTube provides the server URL and stream key that OBS needs to send your scene.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, following YouTube’s current prompts.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If OBS offers a manual connection option, use the server URL and key supplied in Live Control Room. Interface labels can change; use the values YouTube gives for the stream you created.
- Apply the settings, return to the scene, and start streaming from OBS.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Check that both the visual and radio audio are present, then select Go live for the scheduled workflow.
YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the time you plan to broadcast. Follow the current steps in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Test the full broadcast before announcing it
Run a brief test and check the signal at both ends. OBS meters confirm that OBS receives audio; the YouTube preview confirms that the encoder is reaching the live event. Neither check establishes that you have the rights to broadcast the content.
- In OBS, confirm the radio source’s meter moves and the visualizer reacts to that source.
- Listen to the intended mix and check for silence, duplicated audio, clipping, or an unintended desktop sound.
- In YouTube’s preview, verify that the scene is visible and the audio is arriving before selecting Go live.
- After the test, decide whether you will keep an archive and confirm the permission covers it.
OBS recommends testing for a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a first stream; see its Quick Start Guide.
Common problems and fixes
OBS audio meters do not move
The selected OBS source may not correspond to the device or application playing the station, or the source may not be producing audio. Check the source’s selected device, confirm playback, and verify that the operating system permits OBS to access the input. For an analog source, check the connection and any required interface.

The visualizer stays still while audio plays
The visualizer may be listening to a different OBS source. Open its settings and select the source whose mixer meter responds to the radio program.
The YouTube preview has no audio or video
Check that OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube event and that its stream key and server details match the values in Live Control Room. Confirm the scene is active and its audio is present in OBS, then wait for the preview to receive the feed before going live.
YouTube warns about or interrupts the stream
A Content ID match can affect a live broadcast even if you have a license. Stop using the material if required, contact the relevant rightsholder about the permission and channel allowlisting, and do not restart until the rights and YouTube status are clear. Changing encoders does not resolve a rights issue.

Live streaming is not enabled in time
First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube. Enable live streaming in advance rather than waiting until the broadcast is due to start.
DIY or cloud-based operation
With OBS, the computer running the scene, the power supply, and the network connection all need to remain available for the broadcast. YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders, but a separate device is not necessary for the basic software workflow. Whichever encoder you use, the same permissions and allowlisting questions apply.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. To use it, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not take a live feed from a camera or stream to other platforms. That makes it an option for a pre-produced visualizer video, not a replacement for routing a live radio signal through OBS.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: your computer can be off while the uploaded video loops in the cloud.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded, at one price per slot without quality tiers or re-encoding.
- StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
- Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
