How to Choose Audio Bitrate for a YouTube 24/7 Music Stream

For a typical stereo YouTube Live music stream, use 128 Kbps audio at 44.1 kHz with AAC or MP3. A 24/7 schedule does not require a higher audio bitrate.

For a typical stereo YouTube Live music stream, set audio to 128 Kbps, AAC or MP3, and 44.1 kHz. YouTube publishes these as its live-encoder settings for stereo; it does not call for a higher audio bitrate just because a stream runs 24/7. Test a representative section of your program and monitor stream health before relying on a continuous broadcast.

Recommended audio settings for stereo music

Setting Recommended configuration
Audio bitrate 128 Kbps
Audio codec over RTMP/RTMPS AAC or MP3
Sample rate 44.1 kHz
Channel layout Stereo

These are YouTube’s published live-encoder recommendations for stereo audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest; use the protocol and options supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current ingestion setup. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Does 24/7 streaming need a higher audio bitrate?

No duration-specific audio bitrate is published in YouTube’s live settings. A stream running around the clock does not, by itself, call for increasing the stereo audio setting above 128 Kbps. Continuous operation does make it sensible to test the real program and encoder before launch, then keep an eye on stream health and any messages YouTube reports. YouTube’s live encoder guidance

Check the complete stream’s bandwidth

Audio is only one part of the outgoing stream. The total bitrate also includes video, and may include a backup stream if you configure one. YouTube’s video recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so calculate capacity using your actual video settings rather than audio alone. YouTube advises that total bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom. YouTube streaming tips

  3. Compare the resulting total with stable available upload bandwidth, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.

When the channel layout or protocol differs

5.1 surround sound

YouTube lists 384 Kbps at 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC. These settings are for a surround layout, not ordinary stereo music. YouTube’s live encoder settings

HLS ingest

For stereo audio over HLS, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, with AAC, AC3, or EAC3 codec options. HLS has protocol-specific requirements and higher latency than RTMP because it sends media in segments; follow the current HLS setup requirements for your encoder and stream. Preflight and monitoring checklist

  1. Set the encoder’s audio to 128 Kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz; choose AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
  2. Run a representative test with the kind of music and video movement the channel will actually stream.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and after going live.
  4. Confirm that total outbound bitrate, including video and any backup, fits available upload bandwidth with the recommended headroom.

YouTube recommends testing the stream before going live and checking stream health and messages. A representative test helps catch problems in the actual encoder and program setup; it does not establish that a higher audio bitrate will improve the delivered sound. YouTube’s live stream management guidance

Common bitrate and audio setup problems

  • Using 48 kHz because an upload guide lists it: YouTube’s separate guidance for uploaded videos is not the live stereo specification. For stereo live audio, use the live setting of 44.1 kHz. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations
  • Changing bitrate to solve a stream-health warning: Audio is only part of total stream load. Check the full audio-plus-video bitrate against available upload capacity, and review YouTube’s reported messages rather than assuming the audio setting is the cause.
  • Using stereo settings for 5.1: The published live values differ by channel layout: stereo is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz; 5.1 is 384 Kbps at 48 kHz.
  • Expecting a higher audio bitrate to guarantee better sound: YouTube provides a recommended live stereo setting but does not establish a benefit from exceeding it. Test the actual signal and encoder instead.
