Yes. A Raspberry Pi 4 can send a prerecorded video file to YouTube Live, but it must play and encode the file as a real-time stream; uploading the file alone does not make it a live broadcast. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, configure software on the Pi to send the video to YouTube’s ingest URL with the event’s stream key, check the preview, and then start the event. Raspberry Pi lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30 for Pi 4, a sensible starting target—not a guarantee that every file or software setup will run smoothly.

Before you begin: eligibility and equipment

You need a Raspberry Pi 4, a compatible video file available on the Pi or attached storage, internet access with enough upload capacity, and encoder software that can play the file in real time and send it to YouTube. The Pi 4 has a microSD slot, Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi; a separate capture device is not inherently needed for a local video file. Ethernet is a practical wired option if your router is nearby, but no measured stability advantage is established here.

YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. Its eligibility guidance also states a minimum age of 16. Check the current requirements for your account in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance before scheduling an event.

1. Create the YouTube Live event and get its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using an encoder. Set the event title, privacy (public, private or unlisted) and scheduling details.
  2. Open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. Use the values for the specific event you intend to broadcast.
  3. Keep the key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update the encoder configuration.

See YouTube’s stream settings guidance for the controls and key management.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Check the video file on the Pi

Place the video on the Pi’s microSD card or connected storage. Confirm that the installed playback and encoder software can decode its container, video codec, audio codec, resolution and frame rate. Raspberry Pi’s published Pi 4 capabilities list H.264 hardware encode up to 1080p30, and H.264 1080p60 and H.265 4Kp60 decode. Those are hardware specifications, not a promise that a particular software stack can decode, process audio and encode every input in real time.

Pay particular attention to older MPEG-2 or VC-1 files: Raspberry Pi documentation says Pi 4’s hardware MPEG-2 and VC-1 decoders are disabled, so software decoding may be required. If playback stutters, audio drops or the Pi cannot sustain the source during a full-duration test, convert the file on another computer to a format your Pi software handles reliably before the broadcast. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 4 specifications and video codec configuration documentation describe the relevant hardware boundaries.

3. Configure the encoder for YouTube

Use software that can play the prerecorded file in real time, encode or pass through compatible video and audio, and transmit to YouTube’s ingest URL. Configure it with the event’s stream URL and key. YouTube recommends RTMPS (the secure version of RTMP) and supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. For a Pi 4, H.264 at 720p30 or 1080p30 is the more defensible first configuration because Raspberry Pi lists H.264 encoding up to 1080p30. Test the actual file, software and board; no particular Pi encoder build or command is certified here.

Resolution, frame rate and bitrate

Choose a frame rate and resolution the file, Pi and connection can sustain. For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include these examples:

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not measured Pi performance. Select the exact row matching your output and leave headroom in your available upload capacity for network variation. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set these in the encoder where it exposes the controls. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for other resolutions and frame rates.

4. Preview, go live and end the broadcast

  1. Start the encoder on the Pi and wait for the incoming signal in Live Control Room.
  2. Inspect the preview for moving video and audio. Check representative motion and sound rather than relying only on a still frame.
  3. When the preview is correct, start the event in Live Control Room. Monitor stream health and audio/video quality while it is live.
  4. When finished, end the event in Live Control Room and stop the encoder on the Pi. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.

Copyright and documentary rights

Being prerecorded does not exempt a live broadcast from copyright rules. Before streaming a documentary, confirm that you own or have permission to use the film, soundtrack, photographs, archival footage and any other protected material in a YouTube livestream. A video being available online, or having been used in another upload, does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it. YouTube’s systems or rights holders may identify content during a live stream; use material you are authorized to broadcast and review YouTube’s current policies and any claims affecting your channel or event.

Troubleshooting

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder uses the correct event’s ingest URL and key, that it is running, and that the Pi has internet connectivity. Reset an exposed key and replace the old value in the encoder.
  • The preview appears but the event is not live: The encoder feed and the event start are separate actions. Confirm the preview, then start the broadcast in Live Control Room.
  • Video stutters or the Pi struggles: Test the entire file before going live. Reduce output resolution or frame rate, use a more readily decoded source, or convert the file on another computer. MPEG-2 and VC-1 may require software decoding on Pi 4.
  • Audio is missing or out of sync: Confirm that the encoder can decode the file’s audio and is sending AAC or MP3 as configured. Check both audio and movement in the preview before starting the event.
  • The stream health is poor: Compare the encoder bitrate with the matching YouTube recommendation and the connection’s sustained upload capacity. Lower the target if the connection cannot maintain it, then verify the preview and stream health again.
  • The stream ends unexpectedly: Check the Pi’s power, network and encoder process, then reconnect using the event’s current stream settings. Test a planned restart procedure before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want the Pi, its power and its home internet connection responsible for keeping the broadcast going, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud option. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the video as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
