A VPS reboot interrupts the video feed YouTube receives. Your stream can resume only if the encoder starts again after boot, reconnects with its saved stream URL and key, and YouTube’s broadcast settings allow the transition. A reboot alone does not guarantee either an automatic restart or one uninterrupted live event.
What happens during the reboot
- The encoder stops sending. While the VPS and its encoder are down, YouTube receives no video from that server. YouTube describes a stream as active when its servers are receiving data from the encoder, so the feed is interrupted until sending resumes. The length of the interruption depends on the VPS boot and encoder startup; no fixed recovery time is established. Google for Developers: Life of a Broadcast
- The operating system starts. The encoder returns automatically only if it is configured to launch at boot. On a systemd-based Linux VPS, enabling a service for startup and starting it immediately are distinct operations: starting a process before a reboot does not, by itself, make it a boot service. systemctl manual
- The encoder reconnects. Once running, it must have access to its configuration, media or playlist, working directory, credentials, and network, and must send to the configured YouTube stream URL using the stream key. YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- YouTube handles the broadcast transition. Auto-start and auto-stop settings affect whether the encoder can start the broadcast and whether YouTube ends it after the feed stops. They do not promise seamless recovery or preservation of one continuous event through every outage. YouTube: Manage live stream settings
Will the livestream restart automatically?
It may, but only if both sides recover as intended. Your encoder must launch and reconnect, and the YouTube broadcast must still be in a state that can accept the returning feed. The result depends on the operating system, service configuration, encoder, persistence of its settings and source files, outage duration, and YouTube’s auto-start/auto-stop choices. Official guidance describes these controls but does not guarantee that every 24/7 stream will resume as the same uninterrupted event.
Auto-start
YouTube’s auto-start setting allows streaming from the encoder to start the broadcast. It can help when an encoder feed returns, but it is not a general guarantee that a broadcast will restart in every reboot scenario. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance
Auto-stop
If auto-stop is enabled, YouTube’s API documentation says it ends the broadcast around one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. A reboot that lasts beyond that interval may therefore end the broadcast before the encoder is back. The documentation does not promise what will happen to a later reconnection in every setup. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Make an encoder restart after a VPS reboot
On a systemd-based Linux VPS, configure the encoder as a service and enable that service for the appropriate startup target. Exact unit contents depend on the encoder and your paths; there is no universal unit file for every setup.
- Identify the real launch command and dependencies. Record the encoder command, working directory, configuration and credentials, media or playlist paths, and any network or mounted-storage dependencies. Ensure these are available to the service at boot.
- Configure a service unit for your encoder. Set the correct command and working directory, and arrange for required files and network access to be ready. Follow the encoder and VPS distribution’s documentation for the unit details.
- Enable the service for boot. Use systemd’s enable operation for the intended startup target; enabling is what hooks a unit into startup. Starting a unit launches it now, but is not a substitute for enabling it. systemctl manual · systemd boot targets
- Check the service after a planned restart. Confirm that it is running and that it loaded the intended command, settings, stream key, and input. A running process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving video.
- Verify the feed in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, check that the incoming preview returns and that YouTube is receiving data. Google’s API documentation defines
status.streamStatusasactivewhen YouTube servers are receiving encoder data correctly. Life of a Broadcast - Test during a maintenance window. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and checking the preview; it also describes testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection. Observe the behavior with your actual VPS image, encoder, and broadcast settings. YouTube: Streaming tips
What to check if the stream does not return
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder is not running after boot | Boot configuration | Confirm the service is enabled for startup, not merely started before the reboot; inspect its state and startup errors. |
| Encoder runs but YouTube receives no feed | Connection or encoder configuration | Check network availability, the configured stream URL and key, and whether the service can read its configuration and input files. |
| Feed returns but the broadcast has ended | Broadcast transition settings and timing | Check auto-start/auto-stop and the outage timeline. Auto-stop may end the broadcast around one minute after sending stops; the subsequent transition is not guaranteed by the cited guidance. |
| Service appears healthy, but there is no preview | Actual feed delivery | Use YouTube Studio’s incoming preview and receiving-data status as the check; a running service does not establish that YouTube is receiving the feed. |
| No single complete recording is available | Archive expectations | YouTube’s cited encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise one complete archive for a 24/7 broadcast interrupted by a reboot. |
Stream key, recording, and continuity limits
The stream key is part of the encoder’s configuration for sending to YouTube, not a reboot-recovery mechanism. A normal reboot does not itself imply that the key changes; whether the encoder retains and can read the key depends on how its configuration is stored. YouTube’s setup instructions require the encoder’s stream URL and key. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Do not assume that a 24/7 stream will be saved as one uninterrupted archive. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that condition is not a blanket archive guarantee for a 24/7 broadcast.
