How to Stream a Prerecorded Video to YouTube with FFmpeg on an Indian Linux VPS

A practical guide to sending prerecorded video from an Indian Linux VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, including RTMPS setup, encoding choices, testing and troubleshooting.

To stream a prerecorded video from an Indian Linux VPS to YouTube Live, install an FFmpeg build with H.264, AAC and RTMPS support, copy the file to the server, then run FFmpeg at real-time speed using the RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The VPS must sustain the selected outbound bitrate; if FFmpeg has to transcode the video, it also needs enough CPU.

What you need before you start

  • A Linux VPS with enough CPU for your chosen encoding settings and sustained outbound bandwidth for the video bitrate, audio and transport overhead. Ask the provider about CPU allocation, outbound traffic limits and restrictions; a nominal network speed does not prove the VPS can sustain your stream.
  • A video file stored on the VPS at a stable path readable by the account running FFmpeg.
  • FFmpeg, including ffprobe, and a build that supports the encoders and RTMPS output you intend to use. Package capabilities vary by Linux distribution and build.
  • A YouTube Live stream created in Live Control Room, with its current RTMPS URL and stream key.

This guide uses H.264 video and AAC audio, a conventional FFmpeg route. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, but the command below is specifically for H.264/AAC. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder settings, its RTMPS instructions, and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

1. Install FFmpeg and inspect the source file

Install FFmpeg from your Linux distribution’s trusted package source or an official project build appropriate to your operating system. Check that the installed build has the encoders you need and can send RTMPS. The exact package commands depend on the distribution, so verify the package and build capabilities on your VPS rather than assuming every build is identical.

Use ffprobe, which is distributed with FFmpeg, to inspect the video and audio streams before choosing between transcoding and stream copy:

ffprobe -hide_banner /srv/media/video.mp4

Note the resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether audio is present. If the input already meets YouTube’s ingest requirements, copying its streams may save CPU; if it does not, transcode to a suitable format and settings. Preserve the source’s aspect ratio if resizing, using a deliberate scale-and-pad approach rather than stretching.

2. Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
  2. Open the stream settings and copy the RTMPS URL and stream key. YouTube Help says the RTMPS URL is revealed from the lock icon beside the Stream URL. Use the exact current URL shown there; do not rely on an endpoint copied from an old tutorial.
  3. Build the full publishing URL from the RTMPS host, application path and stream key as supplied for your stream. Google’s ingestion guide specifies an RTMPS endpoint, valid application path and port 443.
  4. Keep the key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not put a real key in a published article, screenshot, repository, terminal transcript or shell history. For unattended deployments, prefer protected environment injection or a secret manager, and restrict access to server process and environment data.

3. Choose bitrate, frame rate and encoding

YouTube’s encoder settings, accessed on 2026-10-03, recommend a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum, and recommend 44.1 kHz stereo audio at 128 Kbps. For H.264 video, the listed recommended video bitrates are 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. These are video bitrates alone: allow additional outbound capacity for audio and transport overhead. Match the output to both your source and the VPS’s actual sustained uplink; these recommendations are not measured guarantees of stream quality.

In this command, 30 frames per second with a GOP of 60 frames gives a two-second keyframe interval. If you change frame rate, recalculate the GOP to keep the interval appropriate. The 14 Mbps video target reflects YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30; do not use it if the source, CPU or sustained uplink cannot support that output. For a 720p30 output, YouTube’s corresponding H.264 recommendation is 8 Mbps. YouTube’s guidance recommends CBR and allows up to 60 fps; select settings suited to the chosen resolution, frame rate and codec.

The FFmpeg manual defines -re as reading input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). Put it before the input it governs: without real-time reading, a file may be emitted as quickly as storage and CPU permit rather than at live playback speed. FFmpeg applies options to the next input or output, so order matters. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Stream copy reduces encoding work, but it does not make an incompatible source compliant. Confirm its codec, frame rate, pixel format, keyframe interval and audio characteristics against YouTube’s ingest guidance, then check the received stream in Live Control Room. If audio is missing or the file contains unusual streams, explicitly select them with -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? and verify the result.

4. Start with a test and monitor ingestion

  1. Run the command in a terminal and confirm that FFmpeg connects and sends data without errors.
  2. Check Live Control Room for a stable incoming signal. Verify picture, sound, motion, resolution and frame rate.
  3. Before a public event, test a short segment that includes movement and audio, as YouTube recommends. Watch stream health and read any ingestion error messages.
  4. For unattended operation, run FFmpeg under a suitable service supervisor or terminal/session manager, and check its logs, restart behavior and access to the media file. Tailor any service and restart policy to whether the stream is scheduled, finite or intended to repeat; there is no single service configuration that fits all three.

A finite input file ends when FFmpeg reaches its end. Repeating it indefinitely is a separate requirement, not something the example command does. Loop behavior and syntax can vary by build and workflow, so confirm the installed FFmpeg manual and test the result before relying on continuous repetition.

5. Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
SSL or certificate error Wrong protocol, endpoint, port or TLS handling. Confirm the URL is the current RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, uses the RTMPS scheme and port 443, and has not been altered.
Connection timeout Outbound traffic blocked or restricted, or incorrect URL/key. Check VPS outbound connectivity to the RTMPS endpoint on port 443, provider traffic restrictions, and the exact URL and key. YouTube’s RTMPS help recommends checking the URL and RTMPS support.
Video plays too quickly or timing is wrong The file is being read faster than real time, or -re is applied to the wrong input. Put -re before the file input whose pace it should control.
Dropped frames or unstable ingest The sustained VPS uplink cannot keep up with video bitrate plus audio and overhead. Measure the real route and compare its sustained capacity with the output. Lower resolution or bitrate if needed; YouTube advises choosing a quality the available upload bitrate can reliably sustain.
CPU saturation Software encoding demands exceed the VPS’s available CPU, particularly at higher resolutions or frame rates. If the source is compliant, consider stream copy after checking its parameters. Otherwise lower resolution or frame rate, use a less demanding encoder preset, or choose a host with adequate CPU. No particular VPS plan is established as sufficient.
No audio or wrong stream selected The input lacks audio, contains multiple streams, or FFmpeg selected an unintended stream. Inspect with ffprobe, confirm the audio encoder and sample rate, and use explicit stream mapping when necessary.
