How to Stream Prerecorded Videos to YouTube from a Linux Server Without OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes. You can use FFmpeg on a Linux server to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live without OBS. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy that stream’s ingest URL and key, then run FFmpeg with real-time input and an output configuration supported by your installed build. Use YouTube’s RTMPS URL when available, keep the stream key private, and verify the preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast.

What you need before you start

  • A Linux server with the video file available locally or at a path FFmpeg can read.
  • FFmpeg built with the input, muxer, video encoder, and audio encoder you plan to use. YouTube supporting a codec does not mean your particular FFmpeg build includes it.
  • Permission and access to create a YouTube live stream, plus its stream URL and key from Live Control Room.
  • Stable upload capacity sufficient for the selected bitrate, with room for normal network variation.

This method is for sending an existing video file as a live encoder feed. It does not broadcast a camera. FFmpeg’s documented real-time file-to-stream pattern uses -re; its protocol example is generic, not a validated, universal YouTube command. FFmpeg Protocols Documentation

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. These values are specific to the stream; do not assume there is one universal endpoint or key.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public script, article, screenshot, shared terminal log, or shell command that may be retained in shell history. Use a protected configuration or inject it through your deployment’s secret handling.
  4. If you scheduled the broadcast, start the encoder and wait for its preview; then confirm Go live in Live Control Room.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted RTMP option. Use the actual URL provided by Live Control Room rather than constructing an endpoint by guesswork. Google’s ingestion guidance specifies the rtmps protocol, a valid server and path, and port 443. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder · Encrypt your stream using RTMPS · Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS

Choose compatible video, audio, and bitrate settings

Use the encoder constraints published by YouTube for RTMP/RTMPS as the target, then confirm your FFmpeg build can actually produce those settings. YouTube’s current guidance allows H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Setting YouTube guidance What to check on your server
Video codec H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS Check the installed FFmpeg encoders and choose one your build supports.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps Match the source and intended output; do not select a rate your encoding setup cannot sustain.
Keyframes Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds Set the encoder’s keyframe interval consistently with the output frame rate.
Rate control CBR Configure constant bitrate rather than relying on an unconstrained variable-rate default.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps Confirm that the file has usable audio and the selected encoder can produce the chosen format.
Advanced video Square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR Apply settings supported by the selected codec and relevant to the source; check YouTube’s current table for details.

For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are mode-specific recommendations, not a universal bitrate for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. Check YouTube’s full settings table for the mode you intend to use, then compare the target with measured server upload capacity. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and using representative video and audio during a test. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance

Check FFmpeg support on the Linux host

Before building a command, inspect the FFmpeg executable that will run the job. Distribution packages and custom builds can differ, so verify the encoder names and features locally instead of assuming H.264, AAC, RTMPS, or a particular input format is present.

  • ffmpeg -encoders lists encoders compiled into that executable; look for the video and audio encoders you plan to use.
  • ffmpeg -protocols lists available protocols. Confirm RTMPS support if you plan to use an RTMPS ingest URL.
  • ffmpeg -i /path/to/video.mp4 probes the media and reports its streams, codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio presence.

These checks establish what the local binary can attempt; they do not guarantee a successful YouTube ingest. Test the exact file and configuration before scheduling an important broadcast.

Build and start the FFmpeg stream

The following is a template, not a tested YouTube command. Replace the placeholders with the file path and the full URL and key from your own Live Control Room, and adjust mappings, codec names, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and RTMPS support for your file and FFmpeg build. Do not paste a real key into a script committed to a repository or otherwise exposed.

  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "<RTMPS_URL_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM>/<STREAM_KEY>"

The example’s 5 Mbps video target corresponds to YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 1080p/30 fps; its 30 fps output and 60-frame GOP express a two-second keyframe interval. They are example choices, not instructions to upscale, downscale, or re-encode every source this way. The libx264 and AAC encoders must exist in the installed build, and the output URL syntax must match the exact URL/key format YouTube gives you. If the supplied URL already includes the key or a complete path, do not append it again.

-re reads the file at its native playback pace rather than sending it as fast as the server can process it. The optional audio mapping (0:a:0?) allows files without an audio stream to proceed, but a silent video may not suit the intended broadcast. If FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder, unsupported protocol, or mapping error, change the configuration to fit the installed build and actual input streams.

Test the preview and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start FFmpeg and watch its output for connection errors, encoder errors, and ongoing frame progress.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check the stream-health indicators before confirming a scheduled stream with Go live.
  3. Test with representative movement and audio, as YouTube recommends. A static opening frame or a silent test does not reveal all encoding and playback problems.
  4. Monitor the upload connection and stream health while the file plays. If the stream is unstable, lower the chosen quality or bitrate and repeat the test rather than assuming the server’s advertised network rate is continuously available.
  5. To end the feed, stop FFmpeg from sending content; use Live Control Room to manage the event and confirm its state.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Connection fails immediately Wrong stream URL or key, malformed output URL, or a key copied for another stream Copy the current URL and key again from the relevant Live Control Room stream. Check whether the URL already contains a path or key before adding anything.
TLS or RTMPS connection error Incorrect protocol, endpoint, port, or a client build without RTMPS support Use the RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube; confirm protocol support with ffmpeg -protocols and use the documented valid server/path and port 443.
FFmpeg says an encoder is unknown The installed build lacks the selected encoder Check ffmpeg -encoders; install or build a version with the needed support, or choose an available compatible encoder.
No video, no audio, or an input error The file’s streams do not match the command’s mapping or input assumptions Probe the file with ffmpeg -i and map the streams it actually contains. Remove or revise audio mapping if there is no audio track.
Preview is unstable or stream health is poor Upload capacity is insufficient or variable for the configured bitrate Run an upload speed test, reduce the output bitrate or quality, and test again with representative footage and audio.
The stream appears to connect, but a scheduled broadcast is not live The encoder feed is running, but the scheduled stream still requires confirmation Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live.

Copyright, reused content, and permission

Being able to transmit a file does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it. Before streaming a documentary, music, archival footage, or any other material, confirm that you own the relevant rights or have permission covering YouTube livestreaming and any included music, clips, or third-party material. YouTube’s tools do not turn an unauthorized copy into authorized content. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight, and review the rights and platform requirements applicable to your content.
