How to Stream Prerecorded Sermons to YouTube Live from a Synology NAS

A Synology NAS can store the sermon; a computer encoder such as OBS plays it and sends the stream to YouTube Live. Follow the setup and event checks before service day.

You can stream a prerecorded sermon stored on a Synology NAS to YouTube Live by using a computer running OBS as the encoder: open the video from the NAS (or copy it to the computer), connect OBS to the YouTube event with its stream URL and key, then start the feed and confirm the event in YouTube’s Live Control Room. The NAS supplies the file; OBS handles playback and streaming. Synology’s documented Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature is for live camera feeds, not a documented way to play a prerecorded sermon file.

What you need for this setup

  • A Synology NAS with the sermon video available to the production computer through the church’s existing file-sharing setup.
  • A computer that can play the file and run OBS while the broadcast is underway.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, plus access to YouTube Studio to create or schedule the event.
  • A reliable internet connection from the encoder computer to YouTube. The NAS-to-computer connection also needs to sustain playback of the chosen file.

This is a practical combination of OBS and YouTube’s encoder workflow; the official instructions cited here do not describe a tested, end-to-end Synology-to-YouTube file-streaming integration. NAS model, DSM version, network setup, codecs and computer capability all affect whether a particular file plays smoothly.

Prepare the sermon video and NAS access

Check playback before configuring the event

Play the complete sermon on the production computer, including its audio, before service day. Confirm the intended opening point and that the file does not have missing or out-of-sync sound. OBS’s Media Source supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM, and can loop a file. That list does not guarantee that every codec inside a file will decode on every computer.

Open the file from the NAS or copy it locally

Use the church’s existing NAS file-sharing arrangement to open the video from the production computer. If playback over the network stutters, copying the recording to the computer’s local storage may reduce dependence on the NAS connection during the broadcast. Configure access according to the local Synology model, DSM version and network; the cited instructions do not establish specific share permissions, protocols or performance figures.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a source in OBS

For a single sermon, add a Media Source in OBS and select the file. Enable looping only if you intend the recording to repeat. For an ordered playlist or broader media-source support, OBS offers a VLC Video source; it requires VLC to be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires matching 64-bit VLC. Rehearse the chosen source so the recording begins at the right point.

Create the YouTube Live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create a stream for an immediate broadcast, or use Manage to schedule one in advance. Scheduling provides an upcoming event viewers can share and set reminders for.
  2. If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable live streaming and allow for YouTube’s stated possible activation delay of up to 24 hours. Do this well before the planned service.
  3. In the event’s encoder setup, locate the server/stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter those in the encoder. In OBS, choose YouTube if it is available, or enter the server URL and key in the stream settings as applicable to your OBS version.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, broadcast graphics or public chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on it again.

YouTube explains the encoder’s role this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” (YouTube Help, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.)

Start, verify and end the broadcast

  1. Open the sermon source in OBS and check that both video and audio meters respond. Start streaming from OBS.
  2. For a scheduled event, wait for the feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, check picture and sound, then click Go live there. Sending an encoder feed does not by itself mean the scheduled event has been made public.
  3. During a rehearsal, verify the NAS file remains accessible (if streaming from the share), the sermon starts at the intended point, and audio is audible in the YouTube preview. A rehearsal is prudent operational practice; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery.
  4. When the broadcast is over, end it deliberately in YouTube Live Control Room using End Stream, then stop sending from OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and available in the channel’s Live tab.

Why Synology Live Broadcast is a different feature

Synology’s Surveillance Station documentation describes Live Broadcast as sending a live camera stream to YouTube: the administrator enters the RTMP path and key, then selects a camera and stream profile. Synology’s DSM 7.4 specification says the feature supports H.264 streaming only. Those instructions do not document selecting a prerecorded sermon stored in a NAS folder as the source. See Synology’s Live Broadcast documentation and Surveillance Station DSM 7.4 specifications.

Other ways to encode the recording

Computer with OBS

OBS is the flexible starting point when the church already has a suitable computer and wants to play one file or configure an OBS media playlist. YouTube lists OBS among its software encoders and describes it as open-source software available at no charge. The computer must remain on and the scheduled event should be checked in Live Control Room.

Dedicated hardware encoder

YouTube’s encoder guide lists the AJA HELO Plus, a standalone H.264 encoder whose PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. The listing also says it can record to SD cards, USB storage or network locations. Before purchase, confirm current device specifications and that your chosen file and NAS workflow are supported; the listing does not establish compatibility with every Synology share or media format.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep a prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving the church computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the sermon recording, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and sends to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.

Copyright and channel considerations

Before streaming a sermon recording, confirm the church has the necessary rights for every element in it, including music, slides, video clips and readings where applicable. A recording that was permitted for in-person use is not automatically cleared for online streaming. YouTube’s copyright systems may detect protected material and affect availability or monetization. Also consider whether repeatedly broadcasting the same material fits YouTube’s channel policies; a technically successful live stream does not guarantee eligibility for monetization. Review current YouTube rules and permissions for the specific material rather than assuming a sermon recording is exempt.

Troubleshooting before or during the stream

  • OBS cannot open the video: confirm the file path and access permissions, test playback outside OBS, and try a locally copied file. For VLC Video sources, install VLC and match its architecture to OBS.
  • Playback stutters from the NAS: compare playback from the share with a local copy. This helps distinguish a NAS/network access issue from a file-decoding or computer-performance issue; no general NAS throughput guarantee applies.
  • YouTube does not show a preview: confirm OBS is sending to the URL and key for the intended event, and check that streaming has been enabled for the channel. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  • The scheduled stream is not public: wait for the Live Control Room preview, verify it, and click Go live.
  • The picture appears but audio does not: check the source’s audio output and OBS meters, then verify sound in the YouTube preview before going live.
  • The recording starts at the wrong point or repeats: check the Media Source playback position and loop setting, then rehearse again before the event.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key before the next broadcast.

Sources and version limits

The steps above draw on YouTube Help’s encoder workflow, OBS Project’s Media Sources guidance dated January 11, 2022, Synology Surveillance Station version 8 Live Broadcast help, and Synology’s DSM 7.4 specification page. Interface labels and supported hardware can change; check the current YouTube, OBS and Synology documentation for your versions before a service. The cited documentation does not establish a particular NAS model’s playback performance or a guaranteed reliability level.
