Burt, the saltwater crocodile associated with the 1986 film Crocodile Dundee, died in Darwin in December 2024. Crocosaurus Cove, his home, estimated that he was more than 90 years old and called his death “the end of an incredible era.” His precise age was not known.
What happened to Burt?
Crocosaurus Cove announced in December 2024 that Burt had died over the preceding weekend. The Darwin attraction described his passing as peaceful. Its statement, attributed by CBS News to the attraction’s Instagram account, said: “Burt passed away peacefully over the weekend, estimated to be over 90 years old, marking the end of an incredible era.”
The age is an estimate from Crocosaurus Cove, not an exact age established from a known birth date. Contemporary reports from ITV News and CBS News both reported the announcement on December 23, 2024.
Was Burt the crocodile in Crocodile Dundee?
Yes. Burt appeared in the 1986 film starring Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski. CBS News identifies him in the creek scene in which Sue Charlton, played by Kozlowski, is attacked by a crocodile. That account establishes his appearance in the film, but does not mean the live animal was used for every crocodile shot or stunt.
