How to Stream Pre-Recorded Videos to YouTube Live with OBS on Windows 11 in India

A practical Windows 11 walkthrough for sending a prerecorded video to YouTube Live through OBS, from channel eligibility and looping to bitrate, preflight checks, and fixes.

To stream a prerecorded video from a Windows 11 PC, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source, connect OBS to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, then start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Turn on the source’s Loop option if the video should repeat. The same general encoder workflow applies in India; YouTube does not document a separate India-specific OBS setup, and each channel must confirm its own live-streaming eligibility.

Before you begin: check that your channel can go live

YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before an event rather than waiting until broadcast day. These are YouTube’s general requirements; they do not establish whether any particular account is eligible.

  1. Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live.
  2. If prompted, complete the live-streaming activation steps and allow time for activation.
  3. Create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and stream key for OBS.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, overlays, or public instructions. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s live-streaming enablement guidance and encoder-stream setup instructions.

Add the prerecorded video in OBS

  1. Open OBS Studio on Windows 11 and create or select a scene for the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources dock, choose + → Media Source.
  3. Name the source if useful, select the local video file, and enable Loop if it should restart automatically when it reaches the end. Loop is off by default.
  4. Check the OBS preview and confirm that the picture and audio are present and framed as intended.

OBS Media Source supports common local video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. If you need a playlist rather than one file, OBS’s VLC Video source can play looped playlists, but VLC must be installed. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
  2. Select YouTube or YouTube RTMPS if that option is available. Otherwise, choose the option to use a custom server and enter the stream URL from Live Control Room.
  3. Paste the stream key into OBS. Keep it private and confirm it belongs to the event you created or scheduled.
  4. Apply the settings, then return to the main OBS window.

Use RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes it as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection. The server URL and key come from the selected stream in Live Control Room; do not reuse or publish them carelessly. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers the connection details.

Choose video and output settings

For a conventional standard dynamic range (SDR) stream, use the ordinary RTMP/RTMPS encoder path. YouTube’s guidance for that path lists H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Set the resolution and bitrate to suit the source video, PC, and actual upload capacity rather than assuming the highest available resolution is best.

Setting Practical choice for a standard SDR stream What to check
Protocol RTMPS when supported Use the server URL provided by YouTube if OBS needs a custom server.
Video codec H.264 Use a compatible encoder option available in OBS.
Rate control CBR Set a steady bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and upload connection.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Frame rate Match the source where practical; YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports up to 60 fps A higher frame rate increases data needs; test the complete stream.
Resolution and bitrate Choose from YouTube’s current recommendations for your resolution Leave upload headroom and verify stream health instead of selecting a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations to select a bitrate for the chosen output. The exact sustainable rate depends on your connection at the location and time of streaming; no India-wide upload-speed figure is established here.

When HLS is relevant

HLS is an alternative delivery path for specific needs, such as HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. It uses segmented delivery and has higher latency than RTMP, with additional requirements for segment duration, format, playlist, and HTTPS. For an ordinary prerecorded SDR video, HLS is unnecessary complexity unless your content and encoder require it. YouTube documents the distinction in its live encoder settings guidance.

Test the stream before the event

  1. Set up the encoder well ahead of the event; YouTube advises configuring it at least two hours beforehand.
  2. If appropriate, create a private or unlisted test stream. Start OBS and wait for YouTube Live Control Room to show the incoming preview.
  3. Check that the expected video is moving, the audio is audible and in sync, and stream-health messages do not show a problem.
  4. Confirm the event page and visibility are correct. Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, as YouTube recommends.
  5. During the broadcast, keep Live Control Room open and monitor audio, video, and stream health.

YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom recommended. As YouTube Help puts it, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” A wired Ethernet connection is an optional way to avoid unreliable Wi-Fi when your PC and router support it; YouTube does not require a particular cable or connection type. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Start and end the broadcast correctly

  1. When YouTube’s preview and stream health look acceptable, start streaming in OBS.
  2. Watch the stream in Live Control Room during the event, especially for dropped frames, audio issues, or health warnings.
  3. When finished, stop the encoder in OBS and confirm the YouTube event has stopped before closing out.

The OBS source’s Loop setting controls whether the local video starts again after reaching its end. YouTube does not automatically loop the video file for you. If the file ends with Loop off, the source stops playing even if the stream connection remains active.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
YouTube does not offer live streaming The channel is not verified, has a live-streaming restriction, or first-time activation is still processing. Check eligibility and activation in YouTube Studio; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
OBS connects, but YouTube shows no incoming picture Wrong stream URL or key, or the OBS output has not started. Check the selected event’s URL and key, then start streaming in OBS and wait for the Live Control Room preview.
The video plays once and then stops Loop is disabled on the Media Source. Edit the source properties and enable Loop, then confirm it restarts in the preview.
There is no audio or the wrong audio is heard The selected file or source audio is not reaching the OBS mix as expected. Check the file’s audio, OBS audio meters, and a monitored test before the event.
Stream health reports instability or video drops The configured stream bitrate may exceed available upload capacity, or the connection may be unreliable. Lower the bitrate using YouTube’s recommendations for your resolution, leave upload headroom, and test again. Consider wired Ethernet if Wi-Fi is the weak link.
A key no longer works or may have been exposed The key may be incorrect, associated with another stream, or compromised. Copy the key for the correct event from Live Control Room; reset it in YouTube Studio if exposed.

Copyright and channel-policy checks for prerecorded video

Having a video file on your PC does not itself establish that you have permission to broadcast it. Before going live, confirm you have the rights needed for the video, music, images, and other material in the recording, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming rules. A technical encoder setup does not guarantee that a stream will be permitted or eligible for monetization. For documentary material, permissions and licenses can differ by clip, soundtrack, territory, and intended use; do not assume that attribution alone grants permission.

YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions and copyright rules can change. Check your own Live Control Room and the current YouTube live-streaming guidance before an important broadcast. This general setup is not India-specific legal advice.
