Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To play several local video files in sequence with FFmpeg, use the concat demuxer: put their paths in a text list, then pass that list to FFmpeg. If the files have matching streams and compatible codecs and time bases, -c copy can join them without re-encoding. That creates a continuous media sequence; publishing it as a live network stream is a separate output-configuration job.
Choose the right FFmpeg concat method
FFmpeg has three concat mechanisms, and they solve different problems. The FFmpeg FAQ distinguishes them:
| Method | Use it when | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | You want to present a list of files as one input, especially for stream-copy joining of compatible files. | Inputs need the same streams, codecs and time bases for reliable stream copy; duration information affects timestamps. |
| Concat filter | Inputs differ and need normalization or re-encoding before they can be combined. | You must select output encoding settings; it is not a stream-copy shortcut. |
| Concat protocol | The format supports file/resource-level concatenation, such as certain MPEG program streams. | It is not a general-purpose way to join arbitrary containers; shell escaping may be needed. |
For most already-encoded files that match, start with the demuxer. If the videos have different stream layouts or encoding parameters, use the filter route rather than expecting -c copy to repair them.
Build a concat list in playback order
Create a plain-text file named list.ffconcat beside your videos:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'first.mp4'
file 'second.mp4'
file 'third.mp4'
The header must be the exact first line, with no byte-order mark or leading/trailing extra spaces, for automatic recognition. Each file line names one input; line order is playback order. The demuxer documentation describes this script format and the virtual-input behavior: FFmpeg concat demuxer.
- Relative filenames in the same directory are simplest.
- Quote or escape paths with spaces or special characters according to the concat script syntax.
- The demuxer’s safe-path checks can reject absolute paths or protocol paths. For trusted local files outside the safe relative-path subset, disable that check deliberately with
-safe 0; do not do so for an untrusted list. - A static list will not automatically include videos added later. Update the list and restart/reconfigure the process as appropriate; the documentation does not establish a general hot-reload guarantee.

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.ffconcat -c copy output.mp4
For ordinary relative filenames, omit -safe 0 when possible:
ffmpeg -f concat -i list.ffconcat -c copy output.mp4
-f concat selects the demuxer, -i supplies the list, and -c copy copies encoded packets into the output without decoding, filtering or encoding. This is fast and avoids generation loss, but it cannot make incompatible files compatible. FFmpeg’s demuxer documentation states that inputs must have the same streams, including codecs and time bases: concat demuxer requirements. The command-line manual explains stream copy and option placement: FFmpeg stream copy.

Check compatibility before relying on stream copy
Compare the files’ stream layout and parameters, including video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate or time base, and which audio streams are present. Matching file extensions alone do not establish compatibility. If those details differ, normalize the inputs to a common format or use the concat filter with encoding.
Use the concat filter when inputs need normalization
The concat filter is the appropriate path when files need to be decoded, normalized and encoded into a consistent result. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes it as the choice when re-encoding is needed: FFmpeg concat FAQ. There is no single filter command that is correct for every set of files: the filter graph must account for the streams present in each input and the desired output format, dimensions, frame rate and audio layout. Determine those requirements first rather than applying a stream-copy command to mismatched sources.

Handle timestamps and apparent gaps
The demuxer starts the first file at timestamp zero and offsets each later file using the previous file’s duration. If a duration is missing or inaccurate—for example, because a file is truncated or its duration is estimated poorly—the next file can start at an incorrect timestamp, causing gaps or artifacts. The concat demuxer supports a duration directive to override inaccurate or missing duration information; consult its syntax before editing the list: concat demuxer script directives.
Inspect the resulting output around file boundaries. If a transition is mistimed, check the preceding file’s duration and its stream compatibility before changing output options.

Publish the sequence to a live destination
The concat input only determines which media is read and how its timestamps are sequenced. The output muxer, transport, codecs, destination URL and credentials determine whether and how it is delivered to a network service. Replace output.mp4 with the output format and destination required by the receiving service, and use that service’s current official ingest instructions for its supported protocol, codecs and stream key. There is no universal RTMP, HLS or other publishing command that follows from concat alone.
For a destination that expects an uninterrupted live feed, the FFmpeg process and its input list must continue running for the intended duration. A static list plays its listed files; it is not by itself an endless scheduler or a mechanism that discovers later arrivals.
When the concat protocol is appropriate
The concat protocol reads supported resources sequentially as one resource. It is suited to file-level concatenation for formats that support it, rather than joining arbitrary MP4 or other containers. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation demonstrates MPEG segments and shows the vertical bars escaped for a shell: FFmpeg concat protocol.
ffplay concat:split1.mpeg|split2.mpeg|split3.mpeg
The FAQ also shows a quoted protocol input for MPEG intermediates: FAQ MPEG concat example. Use this only when the source format and command-line quoting support that approach.

- FFmpeg rejects a path: use relative paths where possible, correct quoting/escaping, and verify the file exists. Add
-safe 0only when a trusted list needs paths outside the safe subset. - Stream copy fails or the output has bad transitions: compare the input streams, codecs, time bases and audio/video layouts. Re-encode with normalized inputs or use the concat filter if they differ.
- A gap, jump or artifact appears at a boundary: check the preceding file’s duration; demuxer timestamps depend on it. Override a wrong or missing duration with the supported list directive when you can establish the correct value.
- Later videos do not play: verify that every file is listed and in the intended order. The demuxer reads the specified static list; it does not promise to discover new files automatically.
- The sequence plays locally but is not live online: configure the output format, transport, destination and credentials separately using the receiver’s ingest requirements. Concat does not select those settings.
