How to Fix FFmpeg YouTube Live Stream Buffering While Looping Video

There is no single FFmpeg switch that fixes every buffering problem. First locate where it occurs: in FFmpeg’s processing, between your encoder and YouTube, or during viewers’ playback. Compare FFmpeg logs and a local recording with the stream health messages in YouTube Live Control Room; then check loop pacing, output settings, system load and upload stability.

How do I stop FFmpeg from buffering when looping a video to YouTube Live?

Use the symptom to choose what to investigate. “Buffering” can mean FFmpeg cannot decode or encode steadily, YouTube is receiving an inconsistent stream, or viewers are buffering even though ingest is healthy. These are different problems, and changing the loop option will not repair an encoder or network bottleneck.

  • FFmpeg reports slow processing, encoder errors or disconnects: inspect its logs and the host’s resource load.
  • YouTube reports a stream-health warning: follow the specific message, such as one about bitrate, connection or keyframes.
  • YouTube ingest and a local recording look healthy, but viewers buffer: investigate playback conditions and latency settings separately.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance treats encoder condition and outbound connection strength as distinct checks. Without the exact command, FFmpeg build, output settings, logs and health message, the cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone.

Does -stream_loop -1 cause buffering?

Not by itself. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes -stream_loop as an input option; a negative value requests repeated input. Put it before the -i for the file it applies to. For example, the option belongs in the input portion of a command, before that file’s -i; this explains placement, not a complete command for every source.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

FFmpeg also has a video loop filter, which repeats frames. It is a different mechanism, not a universal performance improvement. Neither looping approach fixes a slow encoder, an unstable connection or playback buffering at the viewer’s end.

For a file intended to play at normal speed as a live source, check that input is paced in real time. A process that reads and handles media faster than real time is not necessarily producing the steady live output you intend. Inspect the command and FFmpeg’s progress and log output rather than assuming that the loop itself is the fault.

Are the stream settings within YouTube’s current guidance?

Check the actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s encoder settings. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 fps, recommends CBR and recommends keyframes every 2 seconds, with no more than 4 seconds between them. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build and chosen output protocol support the format you select.

Match bitrate to the output

YouTube’s current H.264 guidance gives these examples:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published ingest settings, not a measurement of your connection or a guarantee it can sustain the selected bitrate. Check the current table for your actual codec, resolution and frame rate; guidance can change. Do not copy an old forum value without matching it to your output.

Check keyframes and GOP duration

YouTube’s live streaming error guidance says keyframes that are not sent often enough can cause buffering. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, a maximum interval of 4 seconds and a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.

FFmpeg expresses GOP size in frames. At 30 fps, 60 frames corresponds to 2 seconds. Calculate from the actual output frame rate, not just the source file’s nominal rate; variable frame rate or frame-rate conversion needs particular care. A keyframe interval stated only as a frame count may represent a different duration when output fps changes.

How can I tell whether the encoder or connection is responsible?

  1. Read FFmpeg’s logs while the stream runs. Look for encoder errors, slow processing, missed pacing or disconnects. Note whether the problem coincides with high CPU or other resource load rather than assuming a particular component is at fault.
  2. Inspect a local recording or archive. If the local output stutters or has other defects, investigate the source, decoding, encoding and chosen settings before blaming YouTube or the internet connection.
  3. Compare with YouTube Live Control Room. Check stream health and the exact warning. Use its status alongside the FFmpeg evidence; neither view alone proves every cause.
  4. If the local output is smooth, test sustained outbound upload stability. Compare the tested capacity with the stream’s actual bitrate, and check for variation or interruptions. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate and contacting the ISP when an outbound connection problem is found.
  5. Use RTMPS when configuring YouTube ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted version of RTMP. Test with representative audio and movement, and monitor stream health during the event.

A healthy local recording and a smooth FFmpeg encode shift attention toward transport or downstream playback, but they do not by themselves prove which network segment is responsible. Avoid replacing hardware or changing providers before evidence points to a diagnosed fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if viewers buffer while YouTube says the stream is healthy?

First distinguish ingest health from viewer playback. If FFmpeg is producing smooth output and Live Control Room reports healthy ingest, the problem may be downstream of encoding, including connection variability or viewer conditions.

Check the stream’s latency mode as one possibility, not as a diagnosis. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance warns that lower latency may mean more playback buffering. Compare settings and stream evidence before changing latency; the warning describes a trade-off, not proof that latency is causing a particular viewer’s problem.

What information is needed to diagnose a specific stream?

If these checks do not isolate the problem, collect the details that show what FFmpeg is being asked to do and what happens at each stage:

  • The full FFmpeg command, with stream keys removed.
  • The FFmpeg version and build configuration.
  • Relevant FFmpeg logs, including timestamps around slow processing, errors or disconnects.
  • The exact YouTube Live Control Room health message.
  • Output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings.
  • Host resource load while streaming, plus a sustained upload test result.
  • Whether a local recording is smooth and whether buffering affects all viewers or only some.

Keep the stream key private when sharing a command or logs. A stream key grants access to broadcast to the associated YouTube stream.
