For a YouTube 24/7 broadcast, you do not upload one enormous video as a regular upload. You send a live feed from an encoder, which can play prerecorded video. YouTube’s normal upload limit—256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less—applies to published videos, not as a universal limit on encoder-fed broadcasts. To keep a channel running continuously, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with your stream URL and key, test the feed, and monitor stream health.
Choose the right workflow: upload or live stream
Publish a regular video
For a conventional YouTube video, the documented maximum is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Accounts are limited to videos up to 15 minutes by default; verified accounts can upload longer videos. For files larger than 20 GB, YouTube advises using an up-to-date browser. If your file exceeds 256 GB, YouTube recommends compressing it and identifies H.264 as one way to reduce file size while maintaining quality. See YouTube’s upload guidance for current details.
Broadcast prerecorded video continuously
A 24/7 broadcast is an encoder-fed live stream. The encoder sends the video to YouTube as a live feed; YouTube’s normal upload limit is not a stated cap on every such broadcast. You still need a playout method that feeds prerecorded material into an encoder. YouTube documents connecting software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, but does not prescribe one official way to loop or schedule local video files. Choose and verify that part of your setup separately.
Set up a YouTube live stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Create or open a stream in Live Control Room. Set up the broadcast details in the live control room, then locate the stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection.
- Protect the stream key. Enter it only in the encoder or service you intend to use. Treat it like a password: anyone with access may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube documents resetting the key if it is compromised.
- Configure your encoder. Enter YouTube’s stream URL and key, choose output settings that your connection can sustain, and configure the encoder to play the prerecorded media. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP.
- Start the feed and check the preview. Start sending from the encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. If your stream is not set to start automatically, select Go live there.
- Test and monitor. Test before relying on the setup, then watch YouTube’s stream health while it is live. Settings and a speed test can help identify a weak connection, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
For the current connection workflow and encoder options, see YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.

Choose video and audio settings
Use settings that match both the intended picture and your stable upstream capacity. The figures below are YouTube recommendations for H.264 video, not a universal bitrate guarantee:
| Output | Codec | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | H.264 | 17 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed four seconds. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so consult YouTube’s full live encoder settings table for your intended output. Leave sufficient headroom in your upstream connection rather than treating the video bitrate as a target for the entire connection.

Plan for files, interruptions, and archives
If a regular upload stalls
Upload duration varies with file size, format, connection bandwidth, network traffic, and video quality; YouTube notes that a 4K file takes longer than a 1080p file. If a normal upload is interrupted, return to youtube.com/upload within 24 hours and select the same file to resume. This recovers a regular upload; it does not restart a live broadcast.
If an account that previously uploaded long videos can no longer do so, YouTube advises checking for copyright claims or strikes. If you verified the account only after a failed long-video upload, YouTube says you must upload that video again. See YouTube’s file-size and duration guidance.

If you need an archive of the broadcast
YouTube can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on the automatic archive to preserve a 24/7 event. Keep a local recording if the archive matters. YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance explains the limitation.
Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not show a preview: Check that the encoder is sending to the stream URL for the selected broadcast and that the stream key is correct. Confirm the encoder is actively outputting, then allow time for the preview to appear.
- The stream is unstable or reports poor health: Check upstream capacity, network stability, and whether the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are sustainable. Run a connection speed test, lower the output settings if necessary, and test again before relying on the stream.
- The stream drops: Check the encoder, computer or hardware, and network connection. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; its guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted operation or prescribe one universal redundancy design.
- The broadcast is live, but the archive is missing or incomplete: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 broadcast, use a local recording if you need a dependable copy.
- A large regular upload stops: Resume by selecting the same file at youtube.com/upload within 24 hours. If the file exceeds the normal upload maximum, compress it; if the issue is long-video eligibility, check account verification and any copyright claims or strikes.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not leave a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Review the service and start your free first day.
