The devotional nature of a song does not make it copyright-free: confirm that your permissions cover the specific recording and live online broadcast before you go live.
What you need before starting
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube says the channel must be verified, have live streaming enabled, and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its current eligibility guidance sets the minimum age for streaming at 16. Check the channel’s live access and any restrictions in YouTube Studio before scheduling. - Music rights for every track: permission must cover the particular musical work and the sound recording, as well as your intended online live broadcast.
- A repeatable stream method: use an encoder workflow for a prerecorded playlist loop. YouTube describes encoders as offering more control and customization than simple mobile or webcam streams.
- A stable internet connection: the computer running a local encoder needs dependable upload capacity for the selected resolution and bitrate.
Clear rights to both the songs and recordings
Devotional, bhajan, kirtan or traditional subject matter is not proof that a track is free to use. A song’s composition and lyrics can involve different rights from a particular performance or sound recording. For Indian musical works, IPRS describes performing rights that include making musical works and associated lyrics available through broadcasting and transmission. It is a relevant place to ask about musical-work licensing, but an IPRS licence alone should not be assumed to clear a sound recording, every rightsholder, or a specific YouTube use. Ask IPRS and the owner or rightsholder of the recording what applies to your exact repertoire, channel, territory and broadcast. IPRS licensing information
Build a track-by-track clearance record
- List each song, its composer or publisher if known, the performer, and the exact recording you plan to play.
- Record who owns or controls the musical-work rights and who controls the sound recording.
- Obtain written permission or a licence that explicitly covers live online broadcast from your channel and the intended territory. Keep copies of the terms and correspondence.
- If a rights holder uses Content ID, ask them to add your channel to their allowlist before streaming. A licence does not necessarily stop an automated live interruption unless the relevant channel is allowlisted.

Understand live scanning and archived claims
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can produce a warning or placeholder, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. Creator Music is not a workaround for this use: YouTube says it does not support licensing for live content, and its licensing and revenue-sharing routes do not cover live streams. The cited Creator Music guidance also says expansion to YouTube Partner Program creators outside the United States is pending; catalogue access and rules can change, so check the current terms rather than relying on a track appearing in the feature. Make a devotional playlist and choose how to run it
Option 1: Run OBS on your own computer
OBS is free, open-source encoder software with no watermark or usage limitations, including for commercial use. With a local encoder, the computer, network connection and streaming process have to remain operational for the broadcast to continue. OBS Studio overview
- Put only cleared tracks into a playlist or media source. Arrange the order and set the source to restart or loop after the final track.
- Prepare a video layout—such as a still image or a simple visual—that you have the right to use. Check that the audio is audible and not clipping; test transitions and the playlist’s return to its first item.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and select the encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- In OBS output settings, choose a sustainable resolution, frame rate and bitrate, then configure the stream to use YouTube’s ingestion settings. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s secure extension of RTMP.
- Start with an unlisted or otherwise suitable end-to-end test if available for your workflow. Confirm both the audio and video arrive in YouTube Studio and watch stream-health messages before making the broadcast public.
- Once live, keep OBS and the computer running, monitor YouTube Studio for health notices and check that the playlist continues to loop.
Choose settings for the connection, not the highest possible resolution
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a stable bitrate matched to the available upload speed, constant-bitrate encoding, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain a setting. The listed bitrates are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measured outcomes. Use an upload-speed test and leave headroom for normal network variation; if the stream health is unstable, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
Option 2: Use a hosted service for continuous operation
A hosted service shifts the ongoing stream operation away from a home computer, though you should check the service’s current terms, support and continuity details. Check archiving and monetization separately
Deciding to keep an archive is separate from permission to stream. An archived live broadcast may receive a Content ID claim after it ends, so make the archive choice with the rights situation in mind. Creator Music’s licensing and revenue-sharing options do not license live-stream use.
A continuous playlist is not an automatic monetization strategy. YouTube’s channel monetization policy expects original and authentic content and says repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible under its inauthentic-content policy. Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: check channel verification, whether live access has been enabled, the minimum-age requirement, and Studio for restrictions. Confirm current eligibility with YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance.
- YouTube warns about matched music or inserts a placeholder: stop or replace the track unless you have the necessary rights. If licensed, contact the relevant rightsholder about Content ID allowlisting; keep the permission record available. Persistent matches can interrupt or terminate the broadcast.
- The stream is unstable or reports poor health: verify the measured upload speed, use RTMPS, and reduce bitrate or resolution to a sustainable level. Confirm constant bitrate and the recommended keyframe interval, then run another end-to-end test.
- The playlist stops instead of looping: check the media source’s loop/restart behavior, test the end-to-start transition before going public, and keep the encoder process running.
- A claim appears after the stream: archived live streams can receive claims after completion. Review the notice against the exact recording and licence; do not assume that credit or the devotional nature of the track resolves a rights claim.
- You expected Creator Music to cover the broadcast: it does not support licensing live content. Use only rights that explicitly permit your live use.
