First enable live streaming on the channel, then create a stream in YouTube Studio, enter the stream URL and key in the encoder, and test the preview before going live. The station must also have the rights and permissions needed to distribute its content on YouTube; an existing internet-radio stream does not by itself establish that.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to stream live. YouTube says the channel must have had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- An encoder: software on a computer or standalone hardware that sends the station audio and picture to YouTube.
- Access to the station’s actual programme feed, plus a visual source such as a station-branded still or simple waveform graphic.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings.
- Confirmed rights for the music and other third-party material in the feed, as well as any applicable local permissions.
Enable live streaming ahead of the planned broadcast. YouTube says first-time encoder activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and activation guidance.
Set up the YouTube stream and encoder
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, confirm that live streaming is available for the channel. Complete channel verification and allow time for first-time activation.
- Create the event. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: it tells the encoder where to send the broadcast and lets YouTube accept the incoming feed. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Configure the encoder. Select YouTube as the destination, enter the stream URL and key, choose the station’s programme feed as the audio input, and add a visual source. For a radio-first presentation, use a station-branded still or a simple waveform or now-playing graphic. Use only artwork and other visuals you are entitled to show.
- Set and test the output. Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain, start a private or unlisted test, and inspect the Live Control Room preview before the public broadcast.
YouTube describes both software and standalone hardware encoders as options. Software is a practical starting point if the station already has a suitable computer; hardware may suit a dedicated production setup. YouTube does not establish that a new computer, microphone, mixer, webcam, interface, router, or cable is required simply to relay an existing online audio feed. Choose equipment based on the station’s actual production needs.
Choose reliable stream settings
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance as a platform baseline, then confirm that the encoder and connection can sustain the selected output. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds, and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are YouTube settings recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular setting will suit every encoder or connection. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and use a speed test to assess upload capacity.

- Prioritize stability. Do not select a bitrate simply because it is available in the encoder. Leave upload headroom for normal connection variation; a setting the connection cannot sustain can cause buffering or interruptions.
- Keep the audio feed clean. Confirm that the encoder is receiving the station’s live programme rather than a silent device input or an unintended system sound. Listen for silence, clipping, and synchronization drift.
- Keep visuals rights-safe. A simple still is enough for a radio-focused stream, but any logos, artwork, photographs, video, or on-screen material must be cleared for this use.
Test, go live, and monitor the broadcast
- Start a private or unlisted test stream and check the Live Control Room preview.
- Confirm that the intended Urdu programme audio is audible, at a clean level, and paired with the correct visual.
- Check stream health before making the event public. YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring during the broadcast.
- During the live programme, watch for buffering, stream-health warnings, audio dropouts, silence, clipping, or drift. If a problem appears, check the incoming feed and upload stability before changing encoder settings.
- Decide whether to archive the stream. An archive remains subject to rights and platform policies. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream ends if it is archived.
Clear music rights and local permissions first
The broadcaster is responsible for having the rights needed to use live content on Google services worldwide, including relevant music licensing rights, and for meeting applicable laws and regulatory requirements in the territory of the stream. YouTube’s live-stream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read YouTube’s terms.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Detection can result in a warning or replacement of the picture, interruption, termination, or other copyright consequences. A license may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Confirm both the rights chain for the station’s repertoire and any required Content ID allowlisting with the relevant rights holders.

For a station operating from Pakistan, the specific broadcast, registration, music-licensing, public-performance, recording, and other permissions that may apply depend on the station, its content, rights chain, and distribution. The available official YouTube guidance does not establish which Pakistan-specific approvals apply to a particular station. Verify the requirements with current Pakistani regulator and rights-holder guidance; do not assume that YouTube eligibility or an existing internet-radio authorization clears distribution on YouTube.
Troubleshooting common problems
