A still visual can supply the video component, but an audio-only output does not meet YouTube’s video encoder guidance. The safest workflow is to check playlist compatibility, choose whether to concatenate or normalize the audio, test a short broadcast, and monitor stream health.
What you need before starting
- FFmpeg installed on a computer that can remain on and connected for the broadcast.
- An MP3 playlist and a video source, such as a still visual encoded as video or a looped background video.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
- A stable upload connection that can sustain the bitrate you choose.
- Permission to broadcast both the audio and visual material. Do not assume that music being available online is cleared for a livestream.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance identifies RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Use the URL and key supplied for your channel rather than guessing or reusing credentials. YouTube’s encoder settings guide lists supported formats and recommended stream settings.
Choose how to handle the MP3 playlist
Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding. It is the better fit when the audio files have matching stream properties and you want to avoid an unnecessary conversion. The playlist must follow the concat demuxer’s file-list format; consult the FFmpeg FAQ and documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your system.
Compatibility matters: a playlist that contains files with differing encoding or stream properties may fail, introduce gaps, or behave differently from a single continuous file. Do not assume that every collection of MP3s can be stream-copied seamlessly.

Normalize or transcode when files differ
If the files are not compatible with the chosen concat path, use a concat filter or another suitable filter graph and re-encode to consistent output settings. FFmpeg distinguishes the concat filter—useful when re-encoding is appropriate—from the concat demuxer. Verify stream mapping and test transitions before scheduling a long broadcast.
Pair the audio with video
YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers video as well as audio. Supply a video stream even if the program is primarily a radio playlist: this could be a static visual encoded as video or a looped background video. A static picture that is not actually encoded and sent as a video stream is not a substitute. The precise FFmpeg input syntax depends on the chosen visual and local FFmpeg build, so check the relevant input documentation rather than copying an unverified command.

Set YouTube-compatible output
YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and CBR encoding. It recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps. When transcoding a mixed MP3 collection, AAC is a sensible output choice; MP3 is also listed as supported. YouTube’s LiveStreams documentation provides protocol and stream context.
H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following H.264 values are YouTube Help’s recommended bitrates on its current encoder settings page, accessed in 2026. They are recommendations, not guarantees of quality on every connection.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can reliably sustain. A radio stream with a simple visual may not need a high resolution, but audio still needs to be clear and stable. YouTube advises matching the bitrate to the available connection and checking stream-health messages during the event. See the current YouTube bitrate and resolution recommendations before a major broadcast, since platform settings can change.
Configure FFmpeg and start the broadcast
- Prepare the playlist. Put the intended tracks in order and create the concat input list using the format required by FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. Check file paths and confirm that the files are compatible, or plan to normalize them with a filter and re-encode.
- Choose the visual input. Decide whether to send a still visual encoded as video or a looped background video. Confirm that the selected input can provide continuous video for the duration of the broadcast.
- Inspect the inputs and stream mapping. Use FFmpeg’s input-inspection output to verify that the expected audio and video streams are present. Ensure the playlist audio, not an unintended audio track from the visual, is mapped to the outgoing stream.
- Set encoding parameters. Choose a supported video codec and resolution, use CBR, set keyframes every two seconds (never more than four seconds), and set stereo audio to 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps if following YouTube’s recommendation. Select a bitrate appropriate to both the resolution and dependable upload capacity.
- Enter the YouTube ingest details. In Live Control Room, copy the current RTMPS ingest URL and stream key for the event. FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS in its protocol reference. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to the channel.
- Run a short test first. Start FFmpeg and confirm that YouTube’s preview receives both moving video and audible playlist audio. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, and test representative audio and movement rather than an empty or unusually simple sample.
- Go live and monitor. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health and messages during the broadcast. Verify that the playlist advances and that the chosen bitrate remains reliable for your connection.
The exact command depends on the FFmpeg version, playlist format, visual input, and whether the files can be concatenated without re-encoding. A mailing-list example demonstrates the general pattern of using a playlist as an audio input alongside a separate video input and mapping them to an RTMP output, but it is illustrative rather than a universal recipe: FFmpeg-user example from February 2023. Do not treat its older RTMP destination as current protocol advice; YouTube currently recommends RTMPS.

Looping and playlist edge cases
- Tracks have different properties: normalize or transcode them to a consistent format, then test transitions. Do not rely on stream copy if the inputs are incompatible.
- Audio gaps or errors occur at transitions: inspect the concat list, file paths, and stream properties; then test with a shorter representative playlist and choose a concat/filter approach suited to those files.
- The playlist ends: confirm that the selected FFmpeg workflow is configured to continue for the intended duration. Playlist looping behavior is not identical across every input method and command; verify it with a short test rather than assuming a list repeats indefinitely.
- The stream has no picture: check that a video stream is actually present and mapped to the output, not merely that a still-image file exists among the inputs.
- YouTube rejects or does not receive the stream: confirm the current event’s ingest URL and stream key, protocol, codec, and stream mapping. Avoid publishing or sharing the key.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Audio plays locally but YouTube has silence | The playlist audio was not mapped to the output, or the selected output audio format is incompatible. | Inspect FFmpeg’s input and output stream mapping; confirm an AAC or MP3 audio stream is being sent. |
| Video appears but the playlist does not play | The audio input list may have a bad path, unsupported concat setup, or missing mapping. | Check each file path and confirm the playlist input is mapped as output audio. |
| FFmpeg reports concat or timestamp errors | Playlist files may not have compatible stream properties for the selected concat method. | Use a suitable filter/transcode workflow to normalize inputs, then test the transition points. |
| Preview is unstable or stream health reports problems | The upload connection may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the output settings may not match YouTube’s guidance. | Lower the target resolution or bitrate as needed, verify CBR and keyframe interval, and repeat the test. |
| Broadcast stops when a song list finishes | The selected playlist procedure may play through once rather than repeat. | Test the intended looping behavior before going live and use a method documented for the installed FFmpeg version. |
