Use a VPS as a continuously running encoder: FFmpeg reads your station’s existing audio feed, combines it with a visual track, and sends the result to YouTube Live over the RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The exact FFmpeg inputs and options depend on your feed; there is no single command that works unchanged for every station.
What you need before you start
A radio feed the VPS can reach
Get the station’s audio stream URL and confirm that it is reachable from the VPS. Find out whether it points directly to audio or to a playlist or manifest, and identify the feed’s format. Those details affect how FFmpeg opens the input and whether it can pass the audio through or needs to remux or transcode it. A URL that plays on your laptop is not proof that it is accessible from the server.
A suitable VPS and permission to simulcast
The VPS needs to stay available and have enough network capacity for a continuous outbound stream. Confirm that your hosting provider and plan permit sustained outbound streaming; requirements and permitted use vary, and no particular provider or VPS size is established here.
Before broadcasting, confirm that the station has the rights needed to stream its content on YouTube in the territories it serves. A license for terrestrial radio or web radio should not be assumed to cover a YouTube live simulcast. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for required rights—including music licensing—on the content provider. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party material and can interrupt them; even licensed material may require the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist.

An eligible YouTube channel
Check YouTube Live eligibility before troubleshooting FFmpeg. YouTube’s help page says the channel must be verified and must not have live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. It also says a streamer must be at least 16. YouTube’s eligibility rules can change; confirm the current requirements in YouTube Help and Studio before scheduling a broadcast.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and configure a live event. For the first run, choose a private or unlisted test rather than starting with a public broadcast.
- Copy the event’s RTMPS server URL and stream key from the encoder or stream settings shown in Live Control Room. Use the values shown for your channel or event, not an endpoint copied from an old script. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and recommends it for ordinary content.
- Store the key as a secret. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or log excerpt. Keep it in a protected server-side configuration or environment variable. If it is exposed or rejected, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement key.
The server URL and key are separate pieces of connection information. When configuring FFmpeg, combine them only in the output form expected by the endpoint shown in Live Control Room; do not assume every URL uses the same path or port.

Prepare an audio-and-video output for YouTube
Choose a visual track
YouTube Live expects the encoder output to match its video and audio requirements. A radio station can pair its audio with a static station image or an animated visualizer. A static image is a simple presentation choice; an animation is another option. Neither is a radio-specific requirement established by YouTube’s encoder guidance, and the visual choice does not remove the need to send a valid video-and-audio stream.
Choose codecs and settings
YouTube’s current encoder guide lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, and AAC or MP3 audio. It calls for constant bitrate and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Choose the actual resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and codecs to suit the intended presentation and the VPS’s available outbound bandwidth, checking the current YouTube guide for its resolution-specific bitrate recommendations. Those recommendations can change; do not treat a value copied into an old command as current.

For a radio feed, pay particular attention to the distinction between the input and output. A feed may be MP3 or AAC, but that alone does not establish that its container and codec combination can be sent unchanged in your chosen output. Depending on the source and visual track, FFmpeg may need to remux or transcode one or both streams.
Use a command template, not a universal recipe
The following illustrates the parts of an FFmpeg invocation. It is a template, not a tested, drop-in command: replace the placeholders, adapt input options to your feed and image, and build the final output URL in the form required by your Live Control Room settings. Do not put a real stream key in a public script.

ffmpeg
-loop 1 -framerate YOUR_FRAME_RATE -i /path/to/station-image.png
-i "$RADIO_URL"
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -b:v YOUR_VIDEO_BITRATE
-c:a aac -b:a YOUR_AUDIO_BITRATE
-f flv "$RTMPS_OUTPUT_URL"
Here, YOUR_FRAME_RATE, the bitrate placeholders, input handling, and RTMPS_OUTPUT_URL must be set for your actual source and YouTube event. The command assumes the audio feed exposes an audio stream FFmpeg can select as 1:a:0; playlists, manifests, redirects, authentication, or unusual containers may require different input options. Add video settings that match your chosen output and YouTube’s current recommendations, including a two-second keyframe interval where appropriate. If you do not know the feed’s format, inspect it and test with the actual station URL before going live. FFmpeg supports the RTMP protocol family, including RTMPS; its documentation and YouTube’s encoder guide describe the protocol and output requirements, but neither makes this sample universal.
Run a test and monitor the broadcast
- Start with a private or unlisted test event. Use audio and visual motion like the intended broadcast. A local FFmpeg process running without an obvious error does not by itself show that YouTube is receiving a usable program.
- Check both tracks in Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the image or visualizer and station audio, then listen for continuity and watch the stream-health messages.
- Adjust the output if Studio reports a problem. Recheck the selected audio and video streams, codecs, bitrates, keyframe interval, and output URL against the current encoder guide and event settings.
- Only schedule the public broadcast after the test is healthy. Continue monitoring after it begins, especially for audio interruptions, source-feed failures, and copyright notices.
Keep the VPS stream running unattended
A command launched in a terminal is useful for testing, but a 24/7 station relay also needs a plan for what happens if FFmpeg exits, the station feed becomes unavailable, or the VPS loses its connection. Use process supervision and monitoring appropriate to your server environment so failures can be detected and the encoder can be restarted when appropriate. Choose the supervisor, alerting method, and restart policy for your deployment; there is no single required tool or restart interval established here.

Check FFmpeg’s logs as well as YouTube Studio. Keep the stream key out of logs and public error reports. If the radio source changes format or URL behavior, revisit the input configuration and repeat the private test before relying on the new feed.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
YouTube does not connect
- Compare the RTMPS server URL, path, port, and key with the current values in Live Control Room.
- Confirm that the endpoint and VPS support the required secure connection and that the key has not been reset since the command was configured.
- Check FFmpeg’s connection error and server-side network restrictions. A malformed endpoint or an incorrect key can prevent ingest even when the process starts.
YouTube connects but receives no usable program
- Inspect FFmpeg’s input and mapping logs to confirm it opened the station feed and selected an audio stream.
- Confirm that the output includes both the intended audio and video tracks, and that the codecs and settings are compatible with YouTube’s current encoder guide.
- Use the actual Live Control Room test and stream-health information to distinguish a successful local process from a valid YouTube ingest.
The stream starts and is then interrupted
Look in Live Control Room for copyright warnings or strikes. YouTube scans live content for third-party material and may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Possessing a license does not guarantee that the stream will avoid an interruption: ask the rights owner whether the channel needs to be allowlisted through Content ID, and confirm the station’s rights for the relevant territories.
The key is exposed or rejected
Reset the stream key in YouTube Studio if it may have been exposed, then replace the stored server-side value and restart the encoder. Do not paste the real key into a public command, support post, or screenshot.
DIY VPS relay or a cloud service?
A VPS and FFmpeg give you control over how the station feed is read and encoded, but you are responsible for its configuration, supervision, and monitoring. If you would rather upload pre-recorded videos than maintain a radio-feed encoder, StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops uploaded video from the cloud, not a live camera or radio feed.
