You can stream a local playlist to YouTube Live from a Mac mini without re-encoding when every file has compatible video and audio streams. With FFmpeg’s concat demuxer and -c copy, FFmpeg sends the existing encoded streams rather than decoding and encoding them again. This method does not fix mismatched codecs, stream layouts, or timing; inspect and test the files before relying on it.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your scheduled event. Check eligibility and restrictions in YouTube Studio.
- A Mac mini that can stay on, FFmpeg with support for the output protocol you intend to use, and a reliable internet connection. No specific Mac mini generation or macOS version is established as a requirement for this procedure.
- Local video files in the intended order. Their streams and timing must be compatible for concat stream copy.
- Rights to publicly perform and distribute the video and audio. YouTube also requires streams to comply with its Community Guidelines.
YouTube’s encoder setup and account guidance is in YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder and YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream using an encoder.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. Use the current values shown for that event; do not publish or share the key. Treat it like a password.
- Choose the event’s privacy setting—public, private, or unlisted—and confirm that the media is cleared for the audience and use you intend.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before streaming again.
The key grants access to the stream destination. Do not include a real key in a public article, screenshot, terminal history, repository, or playlist file. See YouTube’s encoder instructions for the event and credential workflow.
Check whether the playlist can be streamed without re-encoding
FFmpeg’s concat list is a local ordered input list; it is not a playlist uploaded to YouTube. Stream copy preserves the encoded packets only when the files’ streams are compatible. It does not convert codecs, reconcile mismatched tracks or timing, resize video, change frame rate, or add overlays.

Make a concat list
Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt with one file entry per line, in playback order:
file '/path/to/first.mp4'
file '/path/to/second.mp4'
Use paths that point to the actual files on your Mac. The example uses absolute paths; the files must be readable by the account running FFmpeg.

Inspect and test the inputs as a group
Confirm that the files have compatible stream structures, codecs, and time bases before using stream copy. Container format alone is not enough to establish compatibility. A file with a different audio track, codec, stream layout, or timing may make a direct concat fail or behave incorrectly. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation explains the format and its requirements: FFmpeg formats: concat.
- If all files are compatible, proceed with
-c copyand test the complete sequence. - If they are not compatible, create consistent intermediate files by re-encoding, or use a re-encoding workflow that can normalize the inputs. That no longer meets the no-re-encode requirement for the stream sent from the playlist.
- Do not assume a command will work merely because each individual file plays locally. Test the exact files together and verify the YouTube preview before the event.
Send the playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg
Run this command from the directory containing playlist.txt, replacing the quoted placeholder with the ingest URL and stream key copied from the event. Never put a real key into a command you plan to publish or share.

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv 'YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL_AND_STREAM_KEY'
-rereads the file at real-time playback speed.-f concatselects FFmpeg’s concat input format;-i playlist.txtsupplies the ordered local list.-safe 0allows the absolute paths used in the example list. Use only a list you trust, since it permits paths beyond the concat demuxer’s safe default.-c copyrequests stream copy instead of a new encode pass.-f flvselects the example’s RTMP-style output container. This is an example, not a guarantee that every media/container combination will work unchanged.
Use the destination supplied by YouTube for that event, and confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers connecting an encoder; FFmpeg documents the concat input format at ffmpeg.org.
Preview, start, and monitor the event
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the event preview in Live Control Room.
- Check that the picture and sound are present and in the intended order. If the event is scheduled for manual start, click Go live only after the preview looks right.
- Keep the Mac mini, FFmpeg process, and network connection available while the playlist runs. Monitor the stream and connection rather than assuming the process will recover from a computer restart, FFmpeg failure, or network outage.
- Leave upload capacity above the total outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and advises testing in advance, checking the preview, and monitoring stream quality. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee against congestion on a shared connection. See YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not establish archiving for longer streams. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Choose another workflow if the files do not match
| Route | Re-encodes? | Handling mismatched files | What it requires |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg concat with stream copy | No new encode pass for compatible streams. | Does not reconcile incompatibilities or transform media. | Compatible local files, FFmpeg, a running Mac mini, and a network connection. |
| Software encoder with re-encoding | Yes. | Can normalize disparate inputs; settings and compute must suit the media and destination. | An encoder workflow and a device capable of running it. YouTube describes software encoders as a standard encoder category; no specific OBS setup is established here. |
| AJA HELO Plus hardware encoder | Not established for this prerecorded-media feature. | YouTube lists an optional PlayToStream feature for scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live. | Separate hardware; it is an alternative, not a requirement for the Mac mini method. See YouTube’s live-streaming equipment information. |
Troubleshooting common problems
FFmpeg rejects the concat input or stops at a file boundary
Check that the list syntax and paths are valid, then compare the streams and timing across all files. Concat stream copy cannot make incompatible inputs match. If the tracks or timing differ, normalize the files in advance or use a re-encoding workflow.
YouTube does not receive the stream
Confirm that the event is an encoder-based stream, that FFmpeg is using the current ingest URL and matching stream key, and that the installed FFmpeg build supports the output protocol. If the key was exposed or copied incorrectly, reset or recopy it in Live Control Room.

The preview has no picture or sound, or playback is not as expected
Inspect the preview before going live. Verify that each source file contains the expected tracks and that the concat sequence is compatible; local playback of each file separately does not prove the combined stream will work. Test the exact playlist and output destination ahead of the event.
The stream drops or quality degrades
Check the Mac mini’s connection and available upload capacity against the total outgoing bitrate, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Shared-network congestion can still reduce actual capacity. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish automatic recovery after a Mac mini restart, FFmpeg crash, or network outage, so plan for supervision and manual recovery if continuity matters.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo runs the playlist in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
