To stream a podcast playlist on YouTube Live, loop a still image as FFmpeg’s video input, feed FFmpeg a prepared audio playlist, map the image and audio to separate output streams, then send the encoded result to the ingest address shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The example below uses H.264 video and AAC audio, but it is a template—not a universal command: validate it with your FFmpeg build and your actual files before scheduling a long broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s current help page says streamers must be at least 16. Check the latest eligibility details in YouTube’s live-streaming help, because platform requirements can change.
- A working FFmpeg installation, a still image to display, and the audio files you want to play.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for your chosen video bitrate, plus access to YouTube Live Control Room to create the stream and retrieve its connection details.
This method sends a pre-recorded audio playlist as a live stream; it does not create a camera feed. The image and audio are separate inputs, and the image must be looped so it remains available while the playlist plays.
Prepare the audio playlist
Use the concat demuxer only with compatible files
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is a straightforward way to present a sequence of files as one input, but it expects the files to have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. A collection of episodes with different formats or stream layouts may fail, produce timestamp problems, or behave unexpectedly. Inspect the files and, if they differ, normalize them to common properties before using this method or choose a playlist approach suited to the installed FFmpeg version.
Create a text file named playlist.txt with one entry per audio file, for example:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
file 'episode-01.mp3'
file 'episode-02.mp3'
file 'episode-03.mp3'
Keep the listed paths under your control. The example command uses -safe 0, which relaxes concat path safety checks; omit it when you can use safe relative paths and the default behavior works for your playlist.
Check the installed options
FFmpeg options and demuxer behavior can vary by build. Check the help available locally before relying on the template:

ffmpeg -h demuxer=image2
ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat
If your episodes are heterogeneous, normalize them before going live rather than assuming concat will convert them automatically. Preparing consistent inputs can shift conversion work out of the live session; the CPU cost of live conversion depends on your files and machine, and no single performance figure applies to all setups.
Create the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or configure the stream for an encoder.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the endpoint YouTube provides, not a guessed address. Prefer RTMPS when it is offered and your FFmpeg build supports it; RTMPS encrypts delivery to Google’s servers.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share a command containing the real key.
YouTube’s encoder guidance currently lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. The template uses H.264 and AAC as a compatibility-oriented example. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s current recommended bitrate range is 5–14 Mbps; select a bitrate your connection can sustain and follow the settings YouTube shows for the stream. A still image may encode efficiently, but that does not remove ingest or network requirements.

Run FFmpeg with a looping image and playlist
Replace the image and playlist filenames, and replace the final placeholder with the ingest URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room. Keep the key private. Do not paste the literal angle-bracket placeholder into your terminal.
ffmpeg
-loop 1 -framerate 1 -i "cover-image.jpg"
-re -f concat -safe 0 -i "playlist.txt"
-map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL>/<stream key>"
This is an illustrative template, not a validated universal command. The image2 -loop input option appears before the image’s -i because FFmpeg input options apply to the following input. The command maps the image as video (0:v:0) and the playlist’s first audio stream as audio (1:a:0).

-re reads the playlist at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. The example requests 30 frames per second and a GOP of 60 frames, which corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval at that frame rate. If you change the frame rate, calculate the GOP length to retain YouTube’s recommended two-second interval. Confirm the endpoint format and RTMPS support with your local build and YouTube’s current encoder settings.
Test and monitor before a long broadcast
- Run a short test using the actual image and representative audio from the playlist.
- Confirm that YouTube recognizes the incoming stream and that the image and audio are both present.
- Listen for gaps or unexpected transitions at episode boundaries; differing durations or timestamps can create artifacts even when the stream starts.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and verify that your upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. YouTube recommends a speed test, a representative test stream, and monitoring stream health.
- Only schedule a long event after the test succeeds. The command’s behavior depends on your FFmpeg version and input files; no single template guarantees that every playlist will work unchanged.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Concat reports errors or playback breaks at a file boundary | Playlist items have different codecs, streams, time bases, or inaccurate durations. | Inspect the files, normalize them to compatible properties, and retest the playlist. Consult the installed concat demuxer help. |
| The still image is missing or FFmpeg rejects the loop option | The image input option is unsupported or ordered incorrectly for the local build. | Check ffmpeg -h demuxer=image2 and ensure the loop option is before the image’s -i. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The ingest URL or key is incorrect, the key does not match the configured stream, or the selected protocol is unsupported by the local build. | Copy the current connection details again from Live Control Room; confirm the endpoint and local RTMPS support. |
| Stream health is poor or the connection drops | The upload connection may not sustain the selected output bitrate. | Run a speed test, lower the output bitrate to a value the connection can support, then test and monitor stream health again. |
| The stream starts but audio is absent | The playlist input may not expose the mapped first audio stream as expected. | Inspect the input streams and adjust the mapping for the actual playlist format; test with representative files. |
| Video motion or keyframe cadence does not match the intended settings | The example frame rate or GOP length was changed without recalculating the interval. | Set GOP length to roughly twice the frame rate for a two-second interval and verify the resulting settings against YouTube’s guidance. |
