Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To stream one prerecorded podcast file, add it to an OBS scene as a Media Source. To play several archive files in sequence, use OBS’s VLC Video source and create a playlist. Then connect OBS to the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio, check the incoming preview, and start the live event. This guide covers both workflows, archive rights, backups, and common problems.
Before you start
- Install OBS Studio and have the podcast file or files available on the computer running OBS.
- Make sure your YouTube channel is eligible to stream. YouTube says a channel must be verified, have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and meet its minimum age requirement of 16. Check the current status in your YouTube Studio account: YouTube live-stream eligibility.
- Confirm you have the rights needed for the full archive, including music, guest recordings, clips, and other third-party material. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the content provider: Livestream terms and conditions.
- Plan for a local recording if you need a dependable copy of the full event. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends recording a local archive as a backup: Archive live streams.
Create the YouTube live stream and get the connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room.
- Create or select an encoder stream. Set the title, visibility, and schedule for the event. YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. OBS uses these to send video and audio to YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
Add the podcast file to OBS
For one file: use Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene for the broadcast, or create one in the Scenes panel.
- In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source. Give the source a clear name, such as “Podcast archive,” and select OK.
- In the Media Source properties, enable Local File and browse to the podcast recording. OBS lists common supported formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Choose playback behavior deliberately. Enable Loop if the recording should repeat. Restart playback when source becomes active starts it from the beginning when the source is activated. Show nothing when playback ends controls what happens after a non-looping file finishes. Close file when inactive can close the file when the source is no longer active.
- Select OK, then confirm the file appears and plays in the preview.
For multiple files: use VLC Video
- Install VLC before setting up this source. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, OBS says to install 64-bit VLC.
- In Sources, select + → VLC Video, name the source, and open its properties.
- Add the archive files to the playlist in the order you want them to play. Choose whether to loop or shuffle, and set the visibility behavior to suit the scene. OBS’s options and source behavior are covered in its Media Sources guide.
- Confirm the playlist plays through the files in the intended order. If the archive should play once, avoid enabling looping; if you need continuous playback, enable it.
Arrange the scene and check audio
In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list appear over sources below them. Put a title card, episode art, or other visual element above the media source only if you want it visible. The OBS Sources Guide explains source order and composition.
- Play the file and watch the audio mixer meters. Confirm the podcast is not silent and that the level is not consistently clipping.
- Check the preview at the start of playback and after any scene change. Make sure the intended image is visible and that the file starts from the point you expect.
- Do not rely on the final frame of a file to hold the broadcast open. Decide whether the source should loop, end with a prepared scene, or be stopped.
- Before your first broadcast, run a short test and check OBS audio meters. This is also recommended in the OBS Quick Start Guide.
Set OBS to send the stream to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
- Select YouTube as the service, or choose a custom server option if needed, then enter the stream URL and key copied from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.
- For video resolution and bitrate, use the properties of the archive and the available upload capacity as your guide; there is no single correct setting for every source or connection. YouTube currently recommends RTMPS for encoder delivery. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and streaming tips for current values and guidance.
- Save the settings, return to the main OBS window, and select Start Streaming.
- Wait for the signal to appear in the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check the picture, sound, and stream health there before selecting Go live when the selected stream setup requires it. YouTube’s encoder workflow explains the Live Control Room sequence: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Monitor the event and keep a local archive
During the broadcast, keep an eye on both OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm that the video and audio remain healthy and that any local recording is actually growing in file size. If you need the complete event preserved, ensure the computer has enough free disk space for the recording; external storage is optional if your existing storage is adequate.
When the event is over, follow the Live Control Room flow to end the YouTube stream, then stop streaming and any local recording in OBS. YouTube’s archive behavior is not a substitute for a local copy when retention matters: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source is black or silent | Wrong file selected, unsupported/undecodable file, or playback has not started. | Reopen the Media Source properties, verify the local file path, test the file in a player, then check OBS preview and audio meters. |
| The file restarts unexpectedly | Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled, or the source was deactivated and activated. | Review the Media Source playback options and scene/source activation behavior. |
| The playlist source is unavailable | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen or restart OBS. |
| Only one file plays, or files play in the wrong order | Playlist configuration, shuffle, or loop setting does not match the intended sequence. | Review the VLC Video playlist order and turn shuffle off if the archive should play sequentially. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | The stream URL/key may be wrong, the stream is not actually sending, or the channel may not be eligible. | Check OBS stream settings against YouTube Studio, confirm OBS says it is streaming, and check channel eligibility in YouTube Studio. |
| YouTube preview has video but no sound | The media source may be muted, the file may have no audio track, or the OBS mixer level may be down. | Check the source and mixer mute controls, meters during playback, and the file’s audio in a media player. |
| Live picture or audio is unstable | Encoder settings may exceed the connection’s available upload capacity. | Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and test with settings appropriate to the connection before the public event. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube stream made from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo keeps the channel live from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. It plays the files you upload, not a live camera feed.
